GIAMOULA I obtained Drive Genius 2.1 as a special offer from OWC bundled with a higher-capacity replacement drive for a MacBook Pro 2.33. It sounded like a good all-in-one tool for $30. I wanted to verify (and repair if necessary) the old drive and duplicate it before swapping drives. I ran the verify utility but it failed because of an unknown error. I tried the repair function and got the same message. I decided to just duplicate the old HD to the new one, but DG didn't recognize the firewire drive, even after repairing with Apple DiskUtility. Now to be fair, I didn't try ProSoft support because I was doing this late on a weekend night, so I can't complain about ProSoft support. I may have gotten a reasonable explanation and solution. But shouldn't it just work out of the box like the other products? Wouldn't a *Genius* do that? I ditched DG, found my old DiskWarrior4 cd, downloaded the free update to 4.1.1, created a new DW boot CD and it ran flawlessly - it found a couple of minor problems. Then I downloaded the free version of SuperDuper and duplicated the hard disk - flawlessly. No need to contact support - these software packages just did their jobs. Maybe this product does work if you have time to get support, and maybe a revsion or update will render it more useable, but until then a more apt name would be DriveDunce. (Version 2.1) |
