GETSOMESAUCE Just to expound on TFINDLAY's wise words, with Quartz Filters, you can take total control of the compression process. In Leopard (perhaps Tiger or earlier, I'm don't recall), in your Utilities folder you'll find "ColorSync Utility". With this program, you can create you own quartz filters which allow to you compress PDFs as much as you see fit. When you start ColorSync Utility, you'll see how Apple programmed their "Reduce File Size" quartz filter that you see in Preview. It's remarkably easy to make your own filter by modeling it off Apple's filter. Head on over to for a quick tutorial. Also, some nice guy on Apple's Discussion boards put up a bunch of premade filters you can download that do the same thing. A follow-up poster even posted AppleScript code and Automator recommendations to make compressing PDFs a snap! Check out for more on that. Happy PDF-Shrinking! (Version 5.7)

Toast Titanium | Jan 12 2009 |
GETSOMESAUCE I confirmed this by using the program and by visiting the Toast 10 forums: Roxio's web site claims "Save streaming web video from your favorite web sites and burn to DVD ...", but it actually does not support the saving of streaming web videos. Videos that are downloaded to your browser's cache when viewed, such as from youtube or espn, will work with Toast. True streaming videos that require a constant connection to the website, such as from nbc, abc, and hulu, will not work. This is just a warning for people who think this feature alone sounds like a reason to upgrade. (Version 10)

PDFpenPro | Oct 23 2008 |
GETSOMESAUCE PDFpenPro is a powerhouse of thought and action, but its inclusion into your workflow may prove to be a frustrating experience. For the money, PDFpenPro (and PDFpen) offers tremendous value compared to other paid offerings such as Acrobat, PDFClerk, and PDF Studio while offering tremendous abilities over the free alternatives such as Apple's Preview or Skim. Pros and Exciting Nuances: 1) The addition of an OCR engine to the program is a powerful move by SmileOnMyMac. No other program aside from Acrobat has even ventured into this realm. 3) Little things - This is the only PDF program I've found that correctly selects/highlights PDF text when the page has multiple columns. 4) It has the ability to edit text that is already in the PDF as well as draw in your own text boxes to add text of your own. 5) It's a Universal binary. 6) Incredible tech support. So incredible, it's practically emotional. 7) Library Pallet - Collection of commonly used shapes and signatures. 8) Primitive layer control. That's a good thing. 9) It has the ability to make an integrated image transparent. Totally genius. 10) Very nicely prepared and thorough help system. While wrought with exciting capabilities, Apple's bomb.app (Remember? From 10.0? Google it.) is occasionally more productive. You'll need to exercise patience save often. 1) It's buggy. It's Buggy McBugbug. It's bugtastic. It's Bugfest 2008. The bugs are manageable and you'll come up with workarounds, but they're there and numerous. 2) No ability to scroll from one page to the next. You can scroll through a single page, or scroll through the thumbnails, but no scrolling through an entire multi-page document using the scrollwheel or slider. 3) Can't scale the document size. 4) No ability to crop an image. (Yes, there's a menu option called "Crop Image", but it just scales an image without letting you crop it...and yes, you can crop an entire page, but not a separate integrated image.) 5) Can't zoom by creating a zoom window. KnowwhatImean? Sure, You can hit the "+" or "-" buttons to zoom in or out, scroll around the document, then hit those buttons again, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to select a portion of your PDF and have it zoom right in/out for you? 6) Very, very, very limited ability to handle PDF permissions. 7) Very limited control over printing options. Want to scale an image to fit the entire page when printing? You can't. Want to print non-contiguous pages from your PDF (in one step)? You can't. Sadness reigns. 8) The OCR engine WILL crash on you. The longer the document, the higher the chances. 9) It's slow. Sluggish, like a wet sponge. It's Sloe McSlow. It appears to only be able to use one processor, and suffers for that. 10) No way to turn off those pesky page numbers that appear at the bottom right of every document. On the whole, I love this program. It's chock full of such sweet milk and honey that it makes me happy to be alive. However, you'll only keep your sanity when using PDFpenPro if your PDF workflow includes a stable companion such as Preview or Skim. I think it offers a good value for it's cost and features, but that's just my vote. By the way, if you want PDFpenPro, go to their website and start to purchase PDFpen (non-Pro) and it'll offer to sell you (also known as "upselling") PDFpenPro for $90...which is $10 off. Happy PDFing. (Version 4.0.1)

M-Audio Revolution 7.1 | Jul 18 2007 |
GETSOMESAUCE Hiya. I'm not necessarily in the same boat as MACENTHUSIAST, but I'm paddling nearby. I have my preferences set to push out all audio through the Revolution 7.1 card. However, all too often, audio will come out of the computer's lone speaker instead of through the card. I could have two videos open in Quicktime and one will play through the card while the other plays through the computer. What's up with that? Audio from flash files embedded in web files likewise more commonly plays through the computer than the card. That's sad. On the happy side of life, it sounds decent and this single-cable-connection thing is neat. Yes, neat. Lastly, the audio in inpure. I'm not sure if inpure will make sense, so let me put it this way. My receiver, to which the Revo 7.1 is connected, is exceptionally sensitive to digitial information. If the digitial stream is infected by analog data, it will cut the audio to salvage its internals. My receiver must do this way too often. This too makes me sad. Please! Bring out an update to 1.5! Pretty please? Otherwise, nice work M-Audio! (Version 1.4.1)

GETSOMESAUCE I admit, I had issues accepting this program. However, now that I bought it, I love it. Yes, it has some bugs like the interface can be quirky at times (i.e. in edit mode, hit the key command to copy a "Value" text then leave edit mode...the "Value" is now appears blank), and converting my passwords from PasswordWalet is a pain (i.e. sure it imports the information, but I have to revisit all of the sites in order to get it to recognize them with the site-specific http address...so the ability to open up the password information into a separate window pane instead of only in the list view would be very helpful such that I could transfer from the imported web form into the new web form), some of the web forms it can handle are limited (websites with drop-down login panes or try using it with bankofamerica.com, it's not pretty), the layout is a little odd (it's very difficult to grab the left pane in order to resize it laterally), AutoFilling of personal information doesn't quite work right (i.e. do I list my country as "US" or "United States" in order for it to work and what about when the website asks for my home address AND shipping address on the same page?), and some key items are missing (i.e. the ability to use the 1Passwd menu button as a type of bookmark such that I can simply select my desired site from the 1Passwd menu to automatically go to the site and log me in - like using "Go & Fill" without having to be in 1Passwd.app), and the ability to create groups within 1Passwd.app such that I can separate website related passwords from information that I just want to keep secure (such as login to FTP sites, Credit Card information, AppleShare server login data, AitPort Extreme configuration data, etc) but I don't care. This program is a powerhouse of thought and action. Bonus! ScreenCastsOnline is offering $5 off until January 31st, 2007! I now love ScreenCastsOnline AND Agile even more now! Go to http://www.screencastsonline.com/1passwd to get the link for $5 off. (Version 2.2.3883)

GETSOMESAUCE (shoot, I too intended mine to be a reply, but turned into an independent post...so I'm reposting it here) Mr. Teare - Regarding the widget concept, I've mulled over a couple of concepts, and the following seems to make the most sense. The "security" portion of my desires is what has me at the moment, nonetheless, here I go. I envisioned a widget with a pulldown menu at the top from which I could select my desired information, say "Quicken Checking Account". After selecting it from the menu, there would be two text fields below it which provide me with my username and password (in clear text)...and also perhaps a third "notes" field. As a side note, when I need a password, I don't really need my password, I just need to be reminded of my password. Nonetheless, if desired, the user could select and copy the username and/or password from the text fields to be pasted where appropriate. On the security end of things, I suppose that a programmer could use the "lock" (like Apple uses to unlock certain preference panes) to allow a user to access the password database, or the programmer could assume that if a user is logged into the machine, then they should have valid access to the database at all times. Perhaps that could be a user-option. Also, once the user hides the widgets, the password fields would clear, "relock", or relock after a certain number of minutes, as preferred by the user. On the programmability end of things, if 1Passwd.app is not running, can you build a widget that can still access the datafile? Perhaps a user could even eventually enter password data through the widget...but that might be for future design. My programming skills aren't up to snuff, so I can only hope that you can make sense of what I wrote. Good luck! (Version 2.1.3791)

GETSOMESAUCE Mr. Teare - I too concur with BROZ's assessment. Password Wallet, albeit semi-abandoned, is quite agile at storing any type of password, and not limiting itself to websites. If 1Passwd could handle servers, terminal.app, credit cards, etc, I would certainly buy it. What's the other thing that's missing? A widget. If you could create a widget that could quickly and securely access passwords, you'd definely have me. I look forward to seeing what 1Passwd has up it's sleeve. (Version 2.1.3791)

Keyword Manager | Nov 25 2006 |
GETSOMESAUCE Hey - I saw this comment from the developer at Versiontracker.com and thought you mind find it interesting. Here is his exact post: A lot of people seem to think that price of this plug-in is high. I can understand that to some people think that $19 is a lot of money. Some may not consider getting their photos organized be worth $19, or they have plenty of time to spend on keywording using iPhoto, or another tool. In any case, we're willing to try experimenting with the price. Until the 14th of December you can purchase Keyword Manager for $12, using the following promo code: VT-542U845 (for people outside the EU: $12) VT-542E845 (if you're in the EU: €12) If we see that the number of purchases increase enough to make up for the lower price, we'll lower the price of Keyword Manager permanently. As for you who are comparing the price of Keyword Manager with the price of iLife, please keep in mind that iLife is designed to sell Apple computers, and the development cost is basically part of every Mac you buy. We can't compete with that, so the comparison isn't really fair. Also, giving the plug-in a poor rating on say stability (you know who you are) because you don't agree with the price is also not fair, in my opinion. Johan Lindström - Bullstorm (Version 1.0.1)
