FRIEDDYLAN  You know you're right, but I think this is a different product idea you have. I suggested textbook output and input as well to better facilitate Quadratics and Matrixes. Its a tall order for the price rand but would definitely get my money. I need a good laptop based graphing calc to match my TI nSpire with CAS and this guy's code seems readily able to pull it off.

We would sit back and watch what he does. I'll buy the first graphing version that allows me to view tables based on my graphs. Of course allowing me to drag the graph around and capture the values in a table would be completely awesome. That's like superhero coding.. complete with codpiece!

FRIEDDYLAN  Sorry about the site not found stuff- I stopped producing the binaries. The cost of having a .Mac account became too much without any donations. So sorry- If someone would host I could continue to build though.

MOOG MODULAR  I don't get it.

CUPS is incorporated into every Apple sold today and neither a developer or support person for the product can afford a .Mac account or maintain a workable server?

The web is filled with low-cost or free servers.

Few of us, myself included, know how to compile source code.

So why is it still be featured here on M.U. as source code only or not provided as a binary? Even Apple ignores it as being important enough to provide via their built-in Software Update feature.

A user interested in this app literally has to wait until Apple updates their system.

That's not right when it comes to "the" integral printing engine used by OS X.

Can't anyone spend $10/yr for a small server with an installer for the latest binary when it's something as important as printing on an installed base of MILLIONS of computers???

I get better support and more timely updates with VueScan, a small scanning app published by single, private author.

If you sell it, you should support it. Are you listening Apple?

KRIONI  @Moog:

Look, that is the point: this developer does NOT "sell" this. He's saying that he can't afford to host the binaries. Think that's bad - do it yourself, then, if it is so cheap.

Second, if you cannot compile the binaries to this updated version of open source software, just wait for Apple to include an update when they think it is necessary. Is there something wrong with what comes with Mac OS X for you? This is one of those :if it ain't broke, don't fix it situations" unless, of course, you are the kind of person who wants to (and CAN) compile the freshest binaries yourself.

Don't be rude to someone who is developing this software for FREE. At some point, Apple will decide to include updates, and then this guy's hard work will benefit millions of Mac users.

Geez!

KRIONI  P.S. I'm also a customer of Hamrick Software (developer of VueScan). A great product, and I expect customer service from Hamrick because I am a _paying_ customer. Did you send this developer money? No? Then don't pick on him.

MOOG MODULAR  Nice assumptions there, Krioni.

I DID pay Hamrick software for VueScan.

That's why I appreciate the great support from them.

I also paid Apple for OS X and expect support from them.

But the point you seem to be missing is that the developers themselves are finding and fixing bugs continuously in CUPS.

Apple doesn't release these updates until they compile and release an entirely new version system.

Rarely, if ever, have I seen Apple Software Update provide these updates.

As for servers, I have several Dreamhost accounts.

For about $10/yr each I get unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth.

Less than the price for a meal where I live.

So if the developers would like to compile downloadable binaries, I would be happy to host them myself.

Simply provide an email address here for someone I can contact and yeah.. smarta**... I WILL host them myself.

I've been an Apple customer for 30 years this year and paid for all of my software whether it was for my first Apple ][+ or my present Imac.

Don't assume everyone is a leach or not willing to put their money where their mouth is, ok Krioni?

KRIONI  @Moog Modular:

Hmm. If you are complaining that Apple should update their included open-source software packages more often, I somewhat agree with you. That said, Apple has a lot to test for, and non-critical open-source updates probably fall behind fixing bugs that actually cause problems for users.

However, it sounded very much like your were criticizing the volunteer developers of a free open-source package of software for not compiling and hosting binaries. That's what I was offended by. Yes, you paid Hamrick, but you didn't pay these guys. They owe you nothing.

As far as hosting costs, you must have a great deal with dreamhost.com - their page describes unlimited hosting as costing $8.95/month, which is quite a bit more than $10/year.

However, I bet you could contact the developers directly (MacUpdate.com comments are probably not the most direct way to reach them), and offer to host compiled binaries. Or, perhaps you could team up with someone who, while not skilled enough to develop the software itself, could at least help in compiling binaries, and then you host them. That wouldn't even require contacting the developers, just finding one person to do (or help you do) the compiling. That would be much more constructive than seeming to blame people who are working for free because they want to make good software for the community.

Once again, if you were picking only on Apple, most of what I said does not apply. You certainly DID pay them, and so have every right to complain, even if what Apple is doing might make sense (as far as where they place priority on updates).

FRIEDDYLAN  The Windows activation requirement is normal, even under VMWare and Parallels.

I can only suspect that Office (being an MS product) obeys the same laws of activation but I may be wrong.

FRIEDDYLAN  I tried the latest release and its pretty darn stable under Mac OS X 10.5.4. Tried it with a few hard drives and was able to see lots of things I thought were long gone.

Give it another try now- whatever the changes were they added to the stability. Still an 'ugly' app though.

FRIEDDYLAN  This appears to work similarly to the version commonly used with Firefox. I think there may be less control but in general its working well. What would be nice is if we also got a button to place in the toolbar to quickly access or perhaps temporarily turn off the plugin- like FireFox's..

Thanks for thinking of the Safari users!

***..

FRIEDDYLAN  Parallels hosed my WinXP (BootCamp) install again..

I removed the Parallel tools from my BootCamp volume and it replaced my DX files with some lame Wine version of files (according to the system) that refuses to be removed or replaced. This is the third time this has happened causing me to reinstall Windows. I'm done with bug reports, I'm done with reinstalls and I'm done with Parallels. My VmWare Fusion installs never harmed the system. I'm dropping this once and for all. If only VMWare was as granular with their settings like Parallels is..

Parallels Desktop

POWERSHAKER  I just don't understand. I mean, all these problems I hear people having, and I always figure out the reason for my problems. Maybe it's because I'm certified, and I've been doing this for a long time. The story lately?

They say OS X Tiger 10.4.11 is the evil update! I installed it flawlessly, because I figured out what was up. Macbook Pro with OS X Tiger 10.4.11 runs like a gem.

Number Two? I install the 5584 build for Parallels on my Macbook Pro as an Update. Runs terrific! Had a minor problem, but I just rebooted, and now it runs crystal.

-------------------

OS X TIGER ADVICE: Download the Tiger 10.4.11 COMBO Intel update from Apple's site! Do not use SOFTWARE UPDATE in OS X! Do not run any programs or applications while you're installing the final update! Do not play music in iTunes while you're installing it! Quit all applications before you begin to install the 10.4.11 update! When restart appears, click RESTART! Do not touch anything! It may take a long time to update on restart! It is NOT HUNG! Wait for the login prompt! IT WARM BOOTS TWICE ONCE RESTART IS INITIATED AFTER UPDATE. BE PATIENT! This is surgery!

Parallels Build 5584 Advice: On message prompt to download the build, say no to installing the BUILD while in Parallels and running Windblows! The new build is now on your desktop. It downloaded automatically. Quit Parallels! Do not install build - I repeat - on top while running Parallels and Windblows XP or Vista! Quit Parallels and Windblows! Once there, quit all other programs. Double click the 5584 Build for Parallels! Let it install! Once it does, do not load Parallels! WARM BOOT! RESTART YOUR MAC! Let it do its thing! When you get in, you should have a flawlessly running 5584 Build of Parallels for your Intel Macbook Pro.

---------------------

Just thought I'd help. All you guys always having a heart attack and all, but you don't pay attention and be careful when you're installing these critical updates. I would think with OS X Tiger Update - the final one - you'd be more wise. With Parallels, same thing. It's still serious, because it's like a virtual SYSTEM without the hardware. Good day!

FRIEDDYLAN  Try installing a previous version found at my download page and let me know if you have a problem please. Otherwise you may be having other problems that affect the clean install. One thing I found with failed CUPS installations is that some PPC applications like MS Office will not launch correctly or crash at launch. Still other PPC apps should continue to work fine. I have yet to resolve the issues you are experiencing once core system elements are completely hosed short of an Archive install of the system from Apple's discs.

I have, however, come to the conclusion that the problems existed before CUPS was installed - installation simply makes a bad situation worse.

FRIEDDYLAN  I've been using FileZilla as one of the best and only freeware Windows FTP applications for some time- it was a godsend for a long time with some very robust functionality.. For the longest time I wanted it or something free like it on the Mac- and we have CyberDuck but its another sickening Mac lickable gui. I tried FileZilla in its Mac beta iterations and it was good enough to use but now its a solid point release and I'm likely to ditch CyberDuck for it.

FRIEDDYLAN  This reminds be of Temple of Apshai. Anyone remember that? Of course in ToA there was much less needed in the way of system overhead. Imagine... 1Ghz needed to play this?! Whoa. There's something not quite optimized going on here. Still as most Macs of today are well over this requirement I have no real hard issues. Lots of old skool fun to be had.

FRIEDDYLAN  I've used this client with Windows for years and have found it to be dependable and fast. I have NEVER had a problem that kept me from getting work done- anything that required a patch or other attention by the developers was done promptly.

BRAVO for bringing this to Mac OS X. Another piece of proof the Mac platform is growing .. Those who venture forth into the new OS' (new to them anyway) take their beloved tools with them.. and this is one of them. If you don't like this tool and prefer a more Mac-like inferface try CyberDuck instead but that would be for a purely cosmetic reason.
