FRANKHOGG  As you said the document you referred us to dates to January of 2000 and deals with Classic, not OSX. I do not, nor can I, attest to the veracity of that 9+ year old web page. But I will restate that I have never had a virus since starting to use Macs in 1984. Even Leo Laporte agrees with me but clarifies it by stating that there has never been a virus "in the wild" for Macs. Proof of concept perhaps but nothing that would support wasting money, time and system resources on virus software. When and if it becomes a problem then I will address it, not before. Google, "leo laporte mac virus" for more info. I don't know who you are but most techies know who Leo Laporte is. I feel that I am in good company and stand by my original statement. You can Google my name too and you'll see I've been around a good long while.

As far as I'm concerned you can use anti virus software, wear tin foil hats whatever floats your boat. But in my many years of experience using and servicing Macs I have never had a virus, trojan horse etc. problem. Take that for what it's worth.

FRANKHOGG  I've been using Macs since 1984 and I don't use any "AntiVirus" software, free or paid for simply because THERE ARE NO VIRUSES FOR A MAC! Never have been. I've never had a problem... NEVER!

Do you know why there are two lion statues in front of the NY Public Library? The answer is they keep the elephants away. Hey it works just as well as any anti virus software for the Mac does.

EFF  Normally, I wouldn't have replied to a comment like this but since you're boasting about your historical knowledge of the Mac (since 1984, no less!!) ... yes, THERE HAVE BEEN viruses specifically targeting Mac OS (Classic) *prior* to OS X. It wasn't even a fraction of the poo-ware targeting Windows back then but it existed nonetheless.

Kindly point your browser to: "http://bit.ly/macviruses", scroll to "7.0 What viruses can affect Mac users?", read, and in the future please refrain from spreading false statements disguised as historical knowledge.

Now, there's nothing wrong with not knowing everything (noone does, except for Stephen Fry), but there's everything wrong WITH SHOUTING falsehoods disguised as facts.

FRANKHOGG  Perhaps you could be so kind as to explain how to do that in a little more detail. Thanks

FRANKHOGG  Okay, it does what it says. More like bursts of stars rather than a trail but if you move the mouse you get a trail. Having said that it's only entertaining for a short while before you have to quit the app to do anything. Slight movements of the mouse causes a star burst which obscures what you want to do. Positioning the cursor is difficult so your only option is to quit it. My suggestions:

Preferences:

Allow for a user defined delay before star bursting.

Allow a used defined movement (number of pixels) before star bursting.

Allow a key sequence to toggle it on and off.

Tie amount or stars to acceleration of mouse.

Have a key sequence to burst stars so I can find my cursor.

And on and on.

FRANKHOGG  Seems nice but there is no provision for adjusting it or quiting it. I used Activity Monitor to quit the process. I think it needs a way to change the settings. Adding a delay before stars start flying would make it easier to position the cursor etc. Otherwise a nice idea that could use a user interface.

FRANKHOGG  The finder shows the version at 2.1 and attempts to run the program results in an exception error of class NilObjectException was not handled and the app shuts down. I dl'ed from the developers site and it was the same.

ISKIPPY  Hmm... I've been using it for the last week or so, and it seems to be working okay.

I have the WeatherEye software installed on my work PC (it runs in the taskbar), and I had trouble with it all day; it didn't seem to want to connect to the server. Perhaps their server was down or something.

MacTranslator

FRANKHOGG  The name of the program (Translator) doesn't match the name of the application. I wish developers would name the download file the same as the program name rather than this or some abbreviation that makes it hard to track in the future.

Earthlink TotalAccess 2005
Jan 1 2004

FRANK HOGG  I sent in a complaint as per instructed: "If you have any feedback or feature ideas, please submit them vai the 'Software Feedback' link in the EarthLink task panel. I answer each and every email that comes in.'

My email was answered by:

Ethan D 2398

EarthLink Electronic Customer Support

EarthLink, Inc.

Case ID 35825417

Apparently "William Harrison

Mac Product Manager - EarthLink" has changed his name to Ethan.

My complaint was: "About Total Access I installed this on a iMac running 10.2.3 and the wife didn't like it. I then uninstalled it and Safari will no longer connect to the net. Mozilla will and email works and I kinda know why it won't work but I need to know what to do to get Safari working to appease my wife."

Ethan's replay was:

"We understand that you are having issues regarding your Safari on your Mac.

Unfortunately, the issue you are having is related to your system rather than the Internet connection via EarthLink. Your best resource for a correct solution to this issue would be the manufacturer of that software. We apologize for any inconvenience."

My reply to Ethan was:

"Dear Ethan D 2398,

Apparently you can't read. If you would just read my original message you would see that the problem with Safari was caused by YOUR SOFTWARE, EARTHLINK TOTAL ACCESS! And you could also see that I DID CONTACT THE MANF. OF THE SOFTWARE which is YOU!

This is YOUR problem caused by YOUR software and I demand YOU fix it!

And finally, Ethan D 2398, You might also notice that this email was NOT addressed to you. But then it does not appear that you read it so I'm not surprised you didn't notice that. Harrison's name came from MacUpdate when he left a nice letter to reply to several peoples complaints about YOUR software. You will also notice two notes from me, 'fth' also about your software. You will likely see more from me about this on MacUpdate if you refuse to provide a fix for this. I installed your software, then uninstalled it and Safari is broken. It's YOU not Safari that is the problem, Stop trying to pass the buck and FIX IT!"
