FLYING_MEAT  You only need the application file.

The other files are for those who wish to build the application from scratch. You can ignore them.

FLYING_MEAT  The beta has issues with import from Eudora. Give 'em a little time.

This is the first (i believe) beta release. It is not feature complete. Doubtless there will be some interface tweaks as well, before the final release.

FLYING_MEAT  "Apple will allow users to convert songs already purchased from the iTunes Store into ringtones, and iPhone users will be able to select any part of a chosen song to serve as the ringtone. That option contrasts with current ringtone deals from carriers like Sprint and Verizon that only offer pre-determined song samples. Most major music labels are working with Apple to offer ringtones, but Universal Music Group reportedly refused Apple's offer."

from http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/08/31/apple.to.offer.ringtones/

So, the snake lawyers from apple will likely not issue a cease and desist, since it seems from the above quoted info that Apple is the only one with a reasonable perspective on this issue. No?

Local Admin
Jul 20 2007

FLYING_MEAT  Not to nitpick, but this would have been a bit easier to use if the list of potential admin users was a text file.

That way, the main admin doesn't have to delve into Directory services just to add a potential admin user.

Just add the name to the text file.

I can see where this might be of use to some folks out there in the wild. Cool idea. :)

FLYING_MEAT  Installed (after figuring out a whacky bug with autoupdater) without problem.

Launched Word. No problem. Are there new icons in the document templates window? Seems like it...

Launched Excel. No Problem.

Otherwise, seems fine...

FLYING_MEAT  I think this software is absolutely awesome. It seems like a no brainer for Apple to provide something like this in it's future OS products under the Energy Saver preferences or something.

Thanks Lobotomo! You deserve to be compensated for this one. :)

I do not know if there are risks associated with setting the sliders incorrectly (or if that's even a possibility, since I'm not likely to try that ;) ) so that is the reason for the, perhaps harsh, 4 star in Ease of Use. :P :)

Using an early (mat screen) MacBook Pro.

Fan Control
Oct 24 2006

FLYING_MEAT  i did think it worked well. that is why i'm back for more of the fan control goodness.

what i discovered on my own machine is that i could no longer shut down. after singluser fsck, permissions repair, some forced power offs, and log checks yielded little information as to how to resolve the problem, so being the terminal-geek-wannabe that i am, i issued the "shutdown -h now" command that allowed me to discover the problem. fan control (or some sibling) would not terminate normally. i then issued kill -9 for the process in question and was greeted by the resumption of my shutdown.

I removed the startup item and prefpane when i rebooted and i was able to shut down normally.

i then went to the fan control site and discovered the 1.1 release. i installed it and have not had a problem since.

all of this is not to say that everyone will have issues like i described, or that something else mangled my shutdowns and fan control was just a symptom, but that is "a reason" why "i" got the 1.1 release.

i recall seeing somewhere that there might have been discrepancies in the readings presented in the previous version, so there might be another reason someone might want to get the 1.1 version.

aren't you glad you asked? :)

FLYING_MEAT  theoretically, /Library/PreferencePanes/

drag to the trash.

that's just a theory, though.

It says where it installs it's stuff. i believe it stores a startup item as well, in... wait for it ... /Library/StartupItems/

FLYING_MEAT  yeah... um, I'd have to guess that the fans will make the MacBook Pro run cooler, but that would only be a guess since it doesn't actually say "what" fan behavior specifically would be modified.

Cripes! A new level of vagueness. Perhaps next time they won't even mention what the update is for.

Maybe next time it'll just say "Firmware." with no description at all?

FLYING_MEAT  What Cyber said!

Yes, I think this is a really nice alternative to the Microsloth product, but wait! "There's one more thing."

Apple's Remote Desktop admin software (ARD) installs as "Remote Desktop." You might want to change the name to something that's less likely to cause someone to accidentally overwrite their other software. :P

Still, this is very nice as a .1 product. Keep up the great work! :)

Highlight

****½

FLYING_MEAT  I'm having trouble saving the preferences of color and pen size.

It would be a irritating to always turn off the hints, change size and color, before using the tool, every time.

Also, the pen type selection keys really should be listed as a note in prefs, or the "About Highlight" window, in case one forgets which keys to press :D

Nice concept though.

Works well with command-shift-4 !

Also, I noticed that there seems to be another application called HighLight 1.0 (!??!?)

Different type of tool, but the same name.

Conference Recorder
Aug 29 2006

FLYING_MEAT  I would hope this has some notification of all parties that the conversation is being recorded. Otherwise, the parties have no way of knowing they are being recorded and given the opportunity to refuse.

It's illegal not to notify people on the phone of that activity, why would/should this be any different?

Any chance this is built in?

TWEAKLY  You're correct, here in Texas, one party is the rule. interesting, i was trying to record a call a couple of days ago using a standard suction cup/digital recorder set up. it worked perfectly in tests with several phone calls but the one i really needed came out blank! somebody's got some cool technology!

FLYING_MEAT  Those of you experiencing problems with the command line fixes in the hint should be aware that there are 3 commands there:

"cd /Applications"

"sudo chgrp procmod VirtueDesktops.app/Contents/MacOS/VirtueDesktops"

"sudo chmod g+s VirtueDesktops.app/Contents/MacOS/VirtueDesktops"

Enter them without the quotes.

That should work as advertised. ;)
