MacPaint X | Dec 7 2008 |
FERRUCCIO BUSONI Patterns, custom patterns, FatBits, brush mirrors . . . The separate windows are also kind of annoying. One reason is that it looks more cluttered; the other reason, which is probably easy to fix, is that if you click on a new tool, you can start using it immediately: you have to click on the main window one to activate it, then click again to start using the tool. The bomb is a little unnecessary, too. In MacPaint you would double-click the eraser to clear, which made sense. As this may not be obvious, perhaps a clear button would be better--one that you click once and it clears, rather than clicking three times to use the bomb tool. (Version 0.3)

FERRUCCIO BUSONI Well, there's just nothing particularly MacPainty about it. MacPaint was really something in its day; if you're trying to "upgrade" it to the modern day, your program should be a lot more advanced. If, however, you're trying to bring MacPaint to OS X, the interface is not much the same, and it lacks MacPaint features like FatBits and Brush Mirrors. (Version 0.2)

FERRUCCIO BUSONI Little Snitch Network Monitor uses about 1% of CPU about when it is first started, then gradually builds up to 5% - 10%. I am running 2.0b10, which says it fixed a problem with Little Snitch Network Monitor... was this the problem? Either way, it's still there. (Version 2.0b10)

Parallels Desktop | Feb 16 2007 |
FERRUCCIO BUSONI I have a USB Dazzle video digitizer, and it still doesn't work. Seeing as the software comes with a DirectX installer, I suppose this is due to lack of DirectX support? Why is it that emulators / virtualizers feel that DirectX / 3D support is unimportant? There's actually little I can use Parallels for because of that one problem causing so many others. FERRUCCIO BUSONI Is there any way to order chapters? Each chapter is a document, and I have labeled them "Chapter I, Chapter II", etc. But since CopyWrite orders them alphabetically, it screw up when I get to "Chapter IX". Is there no way to override this ordering? (Version 2.2.8)

GRYPHONENT Nope, there isn’t. I’ve been asking for this (and other) features since May 2006. Nothing has been done since. I’m seriously contemplating a switch to Scrivener now. It’s a shame when good software is left to wilt. Try emailing the developer... maybe you’ve more luck on your side. (Version 2.2.8)

FERRUCCIO BUSONI Can someone tell me why it is necessary to overwrite a file more than once? Suppose you have a 100MB hard drive. (I know -- it's just an example.) It is filled with a 100MB file. You delete that file, then load another 100MB file onto the drive. The first 100MB is completely gone, right? Because if it isn't, then you would be fitting more than 100MB on the drive -- and if anything significant could be recovered, then you'd be fitting a lot more than the drive's capacity. If any remotely useful data can be recovered after one -- let alone seven -- rewrites, couldn't one find a way to fit more data on a hard drive than its capacity? I don't see why one would need to overwrite more than just once. (Version 2.2.3)

FERRUCCIO BUSONI So, then, they're saying it is possible to store 8.75TB on a 250GB drive, provided you overwrite 35 times and then use fancy forensic hardware to recover the rewrites. Is that really true? It would be far to slow to actually use, but it's still surprising that after 35 random rewrites, you can recover all, or even most, of anything coherent from each layer. (Version 2.3.1)

Permanent Eraser | Apr 14 2007 |
JEEPEE Where did you read that? With the Gutmann-method it's, as far as I know, impossible to recover the data. (Version 2.3.1)

Permanent Eraser | Apr 14 2007 |
FERRUCCIO BUSONI Yes -- I'm saying if you don't use the Gutmann method. If you just overwrite thirty-five times. The Gutmann method is supposedly necessary because even after thirty-five rewrites, your data can be recovered. (Version 2.3.1)

Permanent Eraser | Apr 14 2007 |
JEEPEE I think that's because you overwrite it 35 times exactly the same way. Gutmann overwrites them using specific patterns and random. Well it's complicated... :-) (Version 2.3.1)

FERRUCCIO BUSONI Still my favorite screenwriting software, for the following silly reasons: 1. I can trust it — because it is an industry standard, I don't have to worry about formatting, fonts or anything. I just write. ("Just add words.") 2. It has a very simple interface. There's just a window with your script in page layout — or, if you want, note cards next to it. That said, it isn't work the price if you're presently looking for software — but that is only because of Celtx. (Version 7.1.3)

CrossOver Mac | Sep 3 2006 |
FERRUCCIO BUSONI My experience has been better than I could have expected. It's amazing how many things run — Office, IE6, Kontakt2 (although there isn't much of a way to use it without MIDI support). Nice GUI, more compatible than WINE for Mac — considering what it's trying to do, it's amazing. Of course you can't expect everything to work! It's a beta of something that states explicitly that not everything will work. My chief complaints are launch speed and hardware support, but it would be a miracle if both of those were perfect. FERRUCCIO BUSONI It works pretty well — but what I would very much like is a simple way to copy with root privileges. Opening it with "sudo" in Terminal is annoying and I don't think implementing this in the GUI is hard. But other than that, brilliant! (Version 3.3.1)

Remote Buddy | Jun 19 2006 |
FERRUCCIO BUSONI What I do with my remote is use it to watch a movie, then sleep the computer remotely. I downloaded this so I could do that with VLC player, but I can't figure out how to have the Play (Held) button sleep the computer. It looks to me like it isn't possible. So the app is useless to me. Also, can command, control, option and / or shift keys be mapped to buttons? I can't figure out how to do much — even get this thing off VLC Player behavior when VLC is closed. I don't see any documentation. I'll look into this more, but it shouldn't take this much effort. How lazy we are. (Version 1.0pre3)

D9 I agree! One of the great secrets of the Apple Remote Control is using the Play button to put the Mac to sleep. Right now I have to go through 3 separate steps to get from EyeTV to sleep the computer using Remote Buddy. Plus there is some awkward usability issues with getting out of the EyeTV menu window. Still, it's in Preview stage so there are sure to be some improvements. (Version 1.0pre3)

Remote Buddy | Jun 20 2006 |
FELIX SCHWARZ Since with 6 buttons every possible combination is a very precious resource and actually useful, the play hold combination is not mapped to the sleep function but can rather be used for other useful tasks - like i.e. putting players into full screen mode or putting them out of it. Then, to put the computer to sleep, press the menu button, press left to go to the main menu, select "System", select "Sleep" and you're done. That said, for those who want it, it'll be possible to "hardwire" a button to a certain functionality in future releases. Please keep in mind this is a preview, not a final release! Regarding changing the key mapping for the virtual keyboard, you can achieve this by: - opening the Preferences - selecting "Mapping" from the top - select "Virtual keyboard" from the list of behaviours - then change the mapping to anything you want. Command, control, option and shift keys are available both for short presses as well as for having them kept pressed. You can leave any behaviour by simply pressing menu, then left and selecting whatever other behaviour you want to use. If you have any suggestions as to how to make the interface more intuitive, please let me know. I'm very open to suggestions. (Version 1.0pre3)

Remote Buddy | Jun 20 2006 |
FERRUCCIO BUSONI I think if you put an arrow on the left side of the screen that appears when you press "Menu", it would make it clear that there is more than just the main screen. As it is, a Mac / iPod user would instinctively press "Menu" to go to the previous screen, rather than Left, and probably give up when nothing happen, or get frustrated like I did when it keeps opening an application instead of just going away. Thanks for the quick reply! (Version 1.0pre3)

CHUCKER23N That shouldn't be considered inaccurate. Aside from averaging it (when there are multiple sensors), and converting to Fahrenheit if requested, I don't alter the data. The CPU temperature can vary greatly depending on the workload; without further evidence to the contrary, I would say this is perfectly normal. I have seen comparable data from alternative utilities from third parties. (Version 1.0.3)

FERRUCCIO BUSONI I just reproduced the 0°C error by accident on my 20" iMac Core Duo. All I did was double-click the app, and before it was done opening moved it from the Desktop to the Applications folder. This seems to work every time. If I open it like a normal person, it works fine. (Version 1.0.3)

CHUCKER23N Ah, yes. You could consider this a bug in Cocoa. I use NSBundle's bundlePath and resourcePath methods in order to access files inside the bundle (such as from the Scripts/ directory), which apparently aren't updated properly. I was able to reproduce this problem by running NSLog([[NSBundle mainBundle] bundlePath]); NSLog([[NSBundle mainBundle] resourcePath]); every time the temperature is gauged, then moving the bundle around. Regardless of my moving, Console continued to report the original (and corrected when it had been launched) path. I'm not sure I can find a clean way to work around this, but I will try! However, since many applications use these methods as they're rather basic Cocoa functionality, I would strongly advise not moving an application around while it is running. I will see about reporting this problem with Apple. Thanks for reporting! (Version 1.0.3)
