MacUpdate Desktop | Oct 31 2009 |
FELIX01 Well, I was going to come back to my previous post and add that the silent update to version 5 fixed my problem. I re-downloaded and re-installed MacUpdate Desktop 5 and it went from finding five applications (and nothing else) to 177 applications, 33 widgets, a few screen savers and 11 pref panes. But my previous post is gone so I can't append this note to it! Does the MacUpdate site routinely delete user posts? That's not a good sign since mine had no profanity, slandered no one and was not overly critical beyond saying I would soon trash the app if I couldn't get it to work properly. Subsequently, a silent update (with no version number change) was posted. Anyway, the app is working just fine now (early 2009 MBP, OS 10.6.1) and found three minor updates I guess I'd missed during my usual once/day scan of Mac software changes. It's quite handy (and more accurate than a similar free one I'd tried out) so I'll likely register the app when the 10-day trial is up. I do have a couple questions though: 1. Am I correct in assuming that a new scan is only done when the app is initially launched? Or when I manually select "Check for Updates." Since I rarely turn off my laptop (sleep it) and typically just leave opened apps running in the background, it would be helpful to have a selectable update frequency in the MacUpdate Preferences window maybe every four hours, eight hours, once/day, once/week, etc. The app's resting CPU load is 0% and I haven't noted any serious memory leaks so leaving it run for days (with periodic auto updates) wouldn't appear to be problematic. 2. With a stated 30,000+ Mac app database, there were a few surprises that showed up reflecting no "Current Version" (meaning they aren't tracked by MacUpdate I assume) examples, Apple's Grapher, a boatload of Canon digital camera utilities, RescuePRO, Apple's Podcast Capture, DxO Optics Pro, Gizmo, Google Chrome, Image Rescue, MacGPS Pro, pearCALC, Apple's Photo Booth, Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery (Mac), XBattery +19 widgets (I'm not listing all these). Will you take these I've noted for action or do I need to go through the "Submit" process for each one in turn? (Version 5.0)

DP8 Thank you for your feedback - we will be adding a scheduled background check option in future update, along with a host of other features and refinements. As for titles not matched - there could be a few reasons why they didn't - A) we are not tracking them currently - please submit them to us for review, or B) there is no way to acquire or download them independently (like Photo Booth), or the developer does not offer updates (like Apple has never had a stand-alone Photo Booth updater) or C) MacUpdate Desktop was unable to automatically match the title for some reason. You can either submit to us from within the application, or send me an email - desktop@macupdate - if you just have a list of apps.

Home Weather Center | Oct 13 2009 |
FELIX01 I see absolutely no reason why this app shouldn't be receiving five-star ratings. Does everything I want/need in a graphing weather tracker. Runs 24/7 on my desktop computer and works fine with Snow Leopard. The developer answers e-mails expeditiously and has made every change I've suggested over the years. (Version 1.8.6b2)

1Password | Aug 28 2009 |
FELIX01 Yep, LOUNGE DELUXE has it exactly right, get real. I also use 1P daily, heck, at least a hundred times daily but it still can't access my online bank account without a workaround. And a few not at all due to the way the sites are designed/coded. OTOH, 1Password is well worth the money for the convenience and ability to have strong passwords effortlessly but a quick look through the company's support forum will certainly show some warts. But there is one big difference on the support front, movers & shakers within the company monitor the forum and actually answer questions (typically within a very short period of time...a couple hours unless it's crunch time like right now before their version 3.0 release). Believe me when I say Agile makes the process of getting help a pleasant one. I don't think you can find another software company with a more publicly accessible support framework. They make you feel like fixing your problem is their #1 priority. And that's pretty nice when you have something that doesn't work the way you think it should. And one more thing...the small company isn't afflicted by the common NIH (Not Invented Here) Syndrome. Got a good idea for making the software better? Post it on the forum and you'll get a courteous response. And if it makes sense and is technically feasible, you'll likely see it incorporated in a future release. That's the kind of customer-oriented people you're dealing with at Agile. (Version 2.9.29)

FELIX01 "Tough economic times" is a two-way street...affects users as well. Considering the few times per year I use AirRadar, it'd be worth two or three bucks to me but not $10. I'll continue using version 1.1.5 as long as it functions properly and meets my needs. After that, back to one of the free alternatives. (Version 1.1.6)

FELIX01 What on earth led you to believe that OS 10.5.x is "slower" than previous versions? Absolutely every objective performance test run after Leopard was released showed just the opposite. I have no problem with you publicly asking the developer to support earlier versions of the OS but I do have a real problem with you trying to justify that request with total inaccuracies. Do you thing the readers of this forum (not to mention the developer) 'just fell off the turnip truck?' (Version 1.4)

FELIX01 I need to say right up front that I don't use this app but when I see a company just today touting POSTNET barcoding as a "new" feature, I can confidently tell you that you're dealing with a developer who places no priority whatsoever on keeping the software updated. I mean, get real, mail barcoding and pre-sorting by Zip Code has been required for years and years to receive the USPS reduced-mailing rates; yet, this app is marketed, in part, as a "Small Office" application. And if it takes this long to implement barcoding, what do you think will happen when an OS update "breaks" this software? Will you be dead in the water for an extended period? Or forced to delay the OS upgrade to accommodate Chronos while they take their own sweet time providing a fix? I'd say run, don't walk, away from this software. There are plenty of alternatives by developers who are on the ball. BTW, now that Chronos has finally implemented the ancient POSTNET barcoding, I should also mention that starting in 2009 the USPS standard is Intelligent Mail® Barcoding. It's required for small offices receiving the maximum USPS discounts on their mailings. Wonder how long it'll be before SOHO Labels gets around to incorporating that requirement? The Intelligent Mail® specs were published in 2006...2½ years ago! http://ribbs.usps.gov/OneCodeSolution/ (Version 4.0)

A. B. CARRACHO Unless I fail to understand your premise, I believe you have misinterpreted the December 10, 2008 announcement from Soho Labels 4.0.
Could it be that you inadvertently combined the software's new ability to print a varied range of Facing Identification Marks mentioned under the "What's New" heading with the phrase "Supports 15 barcode formats" in the opening paragraph, resutingin belief that the software was only just now capable of supporting U.S. Postal POSTNET printing?
In any event, visitors to this page should be aware that from the very beginning, which was Version 1 of Labels & Envelopes, Chronos's SOHO products have been capable of printing POSTNET barcodes. (Not to mention PLANET, U.K. Royal Mail, Japan Post, UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN13, EAN8, Industrial 2 of 5, Interleaved 2 of 5, Modified Plessey, Code 39, Code 39 Extended, Code 128, and Codabar barcodes.)
No, i don't work for them. (Version 4.0)

Just because I replied to your comment without taking the time to first ask you about the underlying detail, I get modded down a point. How dare you make a fool of me by pointing out the truth! Only my wife and kids are supposed to do that. Also, now that I read it again, I perceive a hint of snarkiness -- and a lot of know-it-all -- in my words. I apologize for that. You could have been righteously indignant in your reply, yet you weren't. I thank you for that as well. (Version 4.0.1)

FELIX01 >>JunkMatcher was great when it was in active development for Mail, but it seems to have been abandoned. That's why I'd rather pay enough for a superb piece of software to keep the developer around. Students write some great freeware (witness JunkMatcher...author was a Ph.D. candidate) but once they move on and get a paying job commensurate with their abilities, they lose interest and/or no longer have the time and motivation to continue. FELIX01 Is TechTool Pro *really* worth all the hype being generated here? I just checked the TTP user posts on the competing update site and see dozens of negative comments about the app as well as the company. Since I already have all the other apps I want from this bundle, I'd essentially just be buying TTP. Guess I have until midnight Thursday to continue to research and decide. (Version )

FELIX01 Ref: "Version 1.2.2: Netflix has updated their data feed and the program has been changed to work with it." Doesn't appear you've got it 'right' yet. The movie descriptions show some formatting. Here's the movie "Bobby" for example. All movie descriptions are similar. The lives of 22 strangers intersect at Los Angeles's Ambassador Hotel on June 6, 1968, a day that culminated in the assassination of U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (Dave Fraunces). (Version 1.2.2)

FELIX01 My system 10.4.10 install on a PPC Mac is largely unencumbered with add-ons and this update installed with no problems on top of version 11.3.5. A crosscheck with the ReadMe showed all components were installed/updated properly. No issues apparent with limited use of Excel after the update. As of this posting, there were no adverse comments on MacFixIt so these problems below appear to be very isolated. The update even seems to play well with Rosetta on the Intel Macs...unlike Apple's QuickTime update. (Version 11.3.6)

FELIX01 Hey great!! This is a poor-man's (free) Netflix Freak but it allows you to do the essential thing...rearrange your queue via drag & drop. And does it well. However, it's missing one critical piece of information...movie AVAILABILITY! Without a column on availability, I still have to open the NetFlix web site and if I have to do that, I might as well just rearrange my queue from within the NetFlix site. So if the developer is reading this, please parse NetFlix to capture and present that information. Then it'll be just about perfect. (Version 1.1)

FELIX01 Well, if you really "have doubts" as you say, then why don't you post the 3.0 r12 download link in the clear and see if that speeds up r13 any. No, I didn't think so. You don't want to be blacklisted from getting the latest and greatest betas as a software donor, do you? And I suspect you also feel that a developer deserves due compensation for his work. Personally, I think the developer is moving along about as quickly as I would expect given that he's doing the coding by himself and in addition to his day job. Give the guy a break. He deserves a life outside of MTR. (Version 2.6.6)
