Eon
Oct 30 2009
****.

FATFREDDYSCAT  Still some minor bugs, but overall Eon is stable and for me quite useful. The developer has been very responsive to fixing reported bugs and accepting suggestions for enhancements, so expect Eon to continue to improve. It's completely usable in it's current version, though.

While Eon won't fit everyone's workflow, it's very handy if what you want/need is to see your schedule and to-do list at a glance, without having to open an application, pull down a menu, or go to Dashboard. It's by no means the only schedule viewer available and depending on your needs and preferences another solution might suit you better, but if schedule-at-a-glance is of interest to you, this application is well worth checking out.

Transmit
Oct 17 2009

FATFREDDYSCAT  Perhaps they will eventually get it through their "thick skulls" and add the feature you so desperately wish for. But for now, you can just create an Automator workflow to upload your files, and have that workflow run triggered to run as you wish. One way (though by no means the only way) would be to save it as a plugin, and iCal to run that plugin whenever you wish.

Or you can just stop whining and use some other product that has the features you need. For many of us, Transmit works just fine as it is.

Julia
May 6 2009

FATFREDDYSCAT  Sorry, but the pricing is very unrealistic for this utility even it if works exactly as promised. Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" will offer direct Exchange support for not only iCal but Address Book and Mail as well, so not only will it support more functions, no extra server software will be required and the full OS will, if the price is the same as all previous releases of Mac OS X, only cost $30 more per workstation as this utility costs by itself.

Julia/Brutus might have some interest for those who, for some reason, cannot upgrade to Exchange Server 2007 (which Snow Leopard will, I believe, require), but otherwise I don't foresee much future for this product now. A year or two ago, yes, it might have been very appealing, but now, with Snow Leopard probably on a few months away, no, not unless Julia has some functionality the developer's web site doesn't make clear.

MacReporter
Apr 15 2009

FATFREDDYSCAT  The site still says "Coming back soon" months after the site originally went down, so it's pretty clear that the company is out of business and MacReporter a dead product. Unfortunate since it worked exactly the way I liked. NetNewsWire appears to be an acceptable substitute for accessing RSS feeds, though, and is free.

FATFREDDYSCAT  Short acquaintance as of yet, but so far it's working perfectly. Easy, fast, and to date rock solid. It amazes me that this is donationware; it's easily of the quality that could be sold commercially. Anyone interested in a hotkey manager absolutely should check this out, and donate if it proves to work as well for you as it does for me.

Max/MSP

FATFREDDYSCAT  Incredibly powerful program, incredibly difficult company to deal with. Licensing, unless they've changed it in the new version 5, is very arcane and cumbersome.

JAEMS  I agree that the licensing is a major hassle, involving challenge/response and waiting times. They have had to take into account student rebates, temporary 30-day accounts, and all other sorts of things that have boxed them into a corner. I wrote a review of Max 5 after playing with it for a few days. People are welcome to read the full review at http://jnote.org/162

MailSteward
Apr 30 2008

FATFREDDYSCAT  Update: On further reading, I see that those of us who have MailSteward Light get an upgrade to the higher-level MailSteward for the $20.00 upgrade fee, so that's a little less painful. Still seems unreasonable to me for those who already had the full MailSteward, though.

MailSteward
Apr 30 2008

FATFREDDYSCAT  I agree completely with everyone else's comments. I'm more than willing to pay for an upgrade when it really is an upgrade, adding some new feature, but having to pay $20.00 for an "upgrade" that is only three bug fixes and a new licensing system that has no real advantages for me is a different matter.

If the developer can show me how this "upgrade" is going to be worth $20.00 to me, I'll pay it, even though the purchase stated "If you ordered MailSteward, you are entitled to free upgrades ... number, you can always download the latest version." Otherwise I'll stay with the current version and if significant bugs crop up that I have to pay to correct, I'll start looking for a new solution for myself and the 200+ users I support.

eMessage Archiver
Apr 28 2008

FATFREDDYSCAT  Product is apparently dead. No updates in almost a year, and no messages from the developer in his Yahoo Groups support area in equally long. Unfortunate as when it was running under a fully-supported version of Mac OS X and FileMaker, eMessage Archiver was quite useful. But there are too many bugs now, particularly under Leopard, for this to be a viable solution any longer and there are no indications that any further development is happening. Anyone looking for a mail backup program should look elsewhere.

**...

FATFREDDYSCAT  It worked with few issues under Tiger, but has serious bugs under Leopard. Hasn't been updated in a year and half, though updates have been promised several times. Don't pay for this unless and until an update appears that certifies the app as fully Leopard compatible and reviewers (here and elsewhere) verify that the bugs have indeed been fixed.

P.S. The same applies to any of this developer's software; most hasn't seen an update in months if not years.

Drive Genius
Feb 12 2008

FATFREDDYSCAT  The demo information lies. The information for the demo states "The Drive Genius 2 evaluation copy is fully functional, although there are limits to how many times you may use each function." but when you try to run many of the functions, including the Integrity and Benchtest, the application reports "This feature is not available in the trial version of this application" and won't run that function at all. Not what I call "fully functional" by any measure.

Not only does this make it impossible to properly evaluate the product (and I'm not spending $100 on a critical utility whose proper functioning I cannot verify), does anyone really want to trust their system to a company that can't even post accurate information for their demo?
