FLASH1296  Remarkably, under OS 10.6 ["Snow Leopard"] this appl' has only a few finctions that fail - and they are mostly under "system"

With the newly updated O.S. already released in some quarters [e.g. on Macs sold in Japan and on some Mac Minis] and the retail release date set for later this week, I am hoping that we will be seeing an updated version of MacPilot.

FLASH1296  Emet, when you download the Safari4 beta from Apple, you get an installer and an uninstaller.

The hidden beauty of this is that you run the installer and if, at any time, you wish to return to your previous version all that you need to do is run the uninstaller and in a matter of seconds it not only UNINSTALLS Safari4 but it restores your original Safari3 that you had been running !

Impressive.

Note: if you have a lot of 3rd party plugins / add-ons / than there is potential incompatabilities.

Overall, Safari4 is faster and has some new features. I like it a lot.

NOTE: There are several freeware applications to individually enable / disable the NEW features.

I used the Apple Uninstaller - which automatically re-installs whatever version of Safari preceded the one being replaced.

Then I reinstalled GLIMS and have used it for much of a day without problems and through a few restarts and two reboots.

So, for those who wish to check THEIR version number:

I've been beta testing this app, and while it has a few drawbacks, it _is_ in beta, and shows a lot of promise. Your criticisms seem really unfounded to me, and I'm puzzled as to why you felt the need to post basically the same review twice.

FLASH1296  This works quite well at least for moderate sized files.

At first I thought that it would behave like Pando, which uploads your files and then sends messages to your recipients to install the Pando application so that they can then download the file from their website where your file has been stored.

I was so pleasantly surprised.

This works beautifully and with a friendly interface and a shallow almost non-existent learning-curve.

There is no on-line help to answer the most obvious question - what is the size limit for sending a file ? Doh' !

I tried sending a small file and it worked beautifully. Ditto for a file that was several MB in size. I tried with a file that was 7 MB. "I am still waiting." L.O.L. No error message. No notification. No help. No explanation.

Here is a question though.

It claims to be freeware but in the preferences it has a place for registration and a link for you to BUY the product.

What's up with that ?

PETER DA SILVA  The problem is that these other apps only let you choose between sleep and hibernate all the time. When I'm going to a meeting, I just sleep my laptop while I'm walking to the meeting. When I'm going to head home, I hibernate it so it doesn't burn power overnight. The old "Deep Sleep" in the dock was perfect.

The new Dashboard widget is annoying. Even if I used Dashboard it's an extra step to bring Dashboard up to sleep, so I still use the old dock app.

ENCRO  Is it really that hard?

Looking at the screenshot, you can see a list of the host files of which only 1 can be active on the system (selected by using the tick button). By default there will usually only be a single default hosts file in /etc (called hosts). To add a new configuration click the plus button, to remove it click the remove button. The save button obviously saves changes to the hosts config. So basically the app allows you to rapidly swap between configurations on the fly.

If you don't know what a hosts file is try searching in your favourite search engine for 'unix hosts file'. It's pretty much a file that tells your computer which IP address is associated with what URL. You can use it to re-direct addresses and block advertisements at the system level. If you are interested in that then search for 'ad blocking hosts file' instead :)

The developer nor I should not have to hold your hand and spoon feed you information. If you want to learn, you can (and will).

Dond't waste your time. The installed folder of AppleScripts are also non-functional.

There is no included "uninstaller"

That is too bad because the installer drops a LOT of files everywhere.

Spotlight only finds a few, as it does not search within System Folders.

LARAINE  Yes, $40 IS rather a lot for a utility program. But it sounds, from the comments here, that it might be worth it, so I'm going to give it a whirl. I'm driven round the bend by Mariner Write's inexcusably poor International English dictionary. And Dreamweaver 8 doesn't even HAVE one! (Unbelievable.) This (Spell Catcher) is one of those things that Mac users shouldn't have to buy, just as they shouldn't have to buy other utilities like Keyboard Maestro. I HATE that dock. I want to be able to use keyboard shortcuts to open or switch applications. It's so slow and inefficient having to go to the dock. Unfortunately, even Keyboard Maestro won't let me get rid of the dock altogether the way Now Utilities and (as it later became) Action Utilities did with their similar, but plainer, docks. I appreciate how Apple makes its computers so user friendly you'd have to be an idiot not to be able to teach yourself how to use and how to look after one, but there comes a time when Mac users are no longer beginners and want to configure their Macs to suit the way they work. Sorry for the rant. I'll shut up now. *G*

As some have pointed out, development of Odysseus has taken longer than anticipated. However, as the last couple of builds have shown, we've been making significant progress with each new build.

As for charging, there is no charge to try Odysseus. Each beta of Odysseus is fully functional for 30 days, and each beta of Odysseus resets that trial period.

Let's face it -- with these guys, the expression "the Emperor has no clothes!" takes on new meaning. Just remember: this app is really a *copy* of someone else's app, without borrowing the code. What's the point?

INFINITY DATA SYSTEMS  The point is that the Eudora user base was left largely without a viable alternative. Our goal is to provide one. There are hundreds of thousands, of not millions, of users who like Eudora the way it is. The problem is that it will no longer be updated in its current form.

While this project has certainly taken longer than we would have liked, and we've certainly hit our fair share of bumps and snags along the way, Odysseus holds true to the interface and workflow of Eudora.

While we still may have a ways to go, each build gets closer and closer to 1.0.

FLASH1296  Absolutely worthless.

Do not bother to download.

Far and away the superior Backgammon application on the Mac platform is :BG Blitz"

Try the demo.

It plays with some kind of weird starting board - that is NOT played in any country as far as I know.

It is intolerably slow.

It has NO preferences.

It uses no logic for its seemingly random moves.

It has no "doubling cube"

I found that just to move the pieces I had to right-click to do so.

I learned to play in 1969 and played in real-life tournaments from 1970 - 2006 "coast-to-coast" in the U.S.A. etc.

I feel really sorry for having released this version. First (in 1.0) there was a mistake in the logic and I solved it in 1.0.1 but I forgot 2 things:

-Place the pieces in the correct position again (the actual position was to force the logic error).

I have already solved it and will post it later today.

FLASH1296  NOTE:

While this is very god software; the prospective purchaser needs to realize that recovery is a dicey and very tedious process - that generally fails. You may recover any number of files, [usually a huge number], but intact/useful/identifiable/openable ones ... well, there may be a lot or there may be none.

Generally the recovery will work well IF you are recovering files very very promptly after their creation / most recent modification.

The best bet is doing regularly scheduled back-up's using Leopard's "Time Machine" I use third party freeware to modify Time Machine to do a backup twice a day - in the background. RECOVERING an individual file , folder, etc. with Time Machine is elegantly simple in an absolutely revolutionary way, and more importantly, it ordinarily is VERY fast and will NOT fail.

FLASH1296  This application is very easy to use. Simplicity is its sole strength though. It needs more features. The Web Page that it creates is completely bare-bones-- e.g. Items cannot be sorted. There is no search function for those downloading a file. There is no way to mod' the page, etc.

While it works as advertised, it is seriously over-priced. If sufficiently improved, perhaps with the addition of logging file transfers, adding two-way file transfers, etc. I will purchase it.

To me it is very much a "work-in-progress"

FLASH1296  The current version (2.0.2) is priceless. It is beyond a Five Star production. Its feature set and ease of use are matchless. Along with Disc Warrior4.1, it is the only software utility that I suggest to my Mac consulting clients. NOTE: This is far preferable to TechToolPro, which looks great but has absolutely unreliable hardware tests.

A reviewer below obviously does not know how to properly burn a bootable Mac disc. (He probably tried to burn the disc with the image mounted. That is the most common mistake.

FLASH1296  The computer players are supposed to be using A.I. The play is bad - absolutely beyond belief.

All experienced tournament poker players like myself and every author on the subject knows that to bet MINIMAL amounts on strong hands in a tournaments is almost NEVER correct, with the exception of "slow-playing" a hand.

This absurd game even has computer players "closing out" the betting by checking the nuts or calling "All In" with hand s that CANNOT win.

I want my money back. I feel cheated. There is no point playing.

There is NO option to play "no-limit" cash Hold Em either. "Limit" only.

Normal tournaments are always played with 10 entrants. Not here. Not possible.

You cannot play a normal tournament or a "sit-and-go"; just this tiresome silly television format.

Tech support? Virtually none.

It is obviously the software of the year and the year just began. Nothing will surpass it. The question is:

Is Toast 8 the software of the decade? Perhaps.

The list of new features is awesome, the interface is handsome, friendly as can be.

the online Help is not only completely rewritten, but now it really can teach you much of what you need to know in a hurry.

A few minutes ago I burned about 200 MP3's to a single CD. In the past there was a 99 MP3 limit.

I also backed up some data - and now you can easily apply a color or an image to the background when the disc opens in icon view.

APPOLYON  I think it's so that there are no delays when browsing files in the finder. Though this would have little effect on the startup volume, other disks may see a slight bump in responsiveness, though I'd be curious as to how much RAM and CPU it uses to read every minute. Plus its better for the disks to spin down when not in use, isn't it? To preserve their longevity, or not so much?

FLASH1296  From the engineering standpoint, it is best that Hard Drives NEVER go through a restart. Spinning down to a "sleep" mode, where it still spins, albeit at a slow rate. is good.

I have several Macs. I strive not to turn any of them off ever - unless I am going to be out of town for a week or more, essentially never.

I do a little Mac consulting. In the 909's i was the Prez' of an Apple Chartered M.U.G. (Mac User Group) for several years. I have been a Mac Fanatic / Evangelist since 1985, though an Apple II user prior to that.

FLASH1296  Awewsome. This is the standard-bearer for arcade games.

I am hopelessly addicted to Firefall, playing at least an hour or two a day. My high score is about 400,000. What is yours?

FLASH1296  Disabling "menufela" allowed this appl' to function.

Now I can review it.

It is essentially worthless.

It cannot accept/display any text e.g. "to-do's", "reminders", etc.

FLASH1296  Yes. In fact, I DO use menufela !

I will disable menufela and reboot and check out the result.

But on bal;ance, I will never give up menufela - as it is very very valuable on a MacBook with a 13.1" display.

FLASH1296  Cannot actually review this inasmuch as it launches - showing an icon in the menu bar -- but that is as far as it goes. Clicking on it - even with modifier keys produces NO actions.

CHIPCHAP  I'm pretty sure this is because of MenuFela. Anyone else use MenuFela and have the symptoms described by FLASH1296 (to confirm)?

DEMOSTHENES  It is not necessary to disable Menufela and reboot, you can simply switch off menu hiding.

This will allow you to access the MagiCal preferences and set it up, or tear off a calendar. After this you can re-enable menu hiding and continue to use both programs, all without requiring a restart.

Of course, since it is "essentially worthless" you won't be wanting to do that I suppose.
