ETNIER AFAIK I have a 'lifetime' subscription to this software and DO NOT and will not use Leopard: it offers me nothing over Tiger. Developer: will the release version support the immense base of Tiger users??? (Version 8.0b1)

CHADCN Leopard offers EVERYONE something over Tiger. The changes made to the core OS put Leopard very much ahead of Tiger. Not to mention all the features that Apple pushes on their website. (Version 8.0b1)

A Better Finder Rename | Aug 4 2008 |
PUBLICSPACE Version 8 requires Leopard because it uses its new capabilities extensively. I do sympathize with users who do not to upgrade to Leopard. I don't really think there's that much in it for end users. I too failed to see the attraction of Leopard until I realized that it's not about the stuff that comes with the operating system (Mail.app. the Finder, TimeMachine, etc.), but it's all about the programs that developers can build on top of it. Leopard enables developers to write better programs; the primary benefit to customers is that they get better applications from third parties and of course from Apple as well. That's not an easy sell, but that doesn't make it any less true. They are going to try doing it again with Snow Leopard and we'll see how that will work out for them. I've pushed version 7 pretty much as far is it will go; version 7 is IMHO a great file renamer (actually I think it's the best file renamer out there, but I'm biased). Being "stuck" with it, isn't such a bad thing ;-) Version 8, I believe is however a whole lot better still (I'm still biased) and using Leopard's new features really helped a lot in getting the renaming engine and the new user interface done. Usually I would have supported Tiger for longer, but it would have meant cutting features that require Leopard.. thus penalizing the people who have already upgraded (around half of the user base) and not really delivering that much improvement to Tiger users either. If you do not want to upgrade to Leopard yet, there's no rush to do so. A Better Finder Rename 8 will wait for you; it will keep getting better and by the time you buy your new xMac with Snow Leopard pre-installed you will reap the benefits of continuous evolution and all those early adopters will have ironed out all the teething problems :-) In the meantime version 7 will take care of your file renaming needs. ETNIER MacUpdate should highlight releases of this important product: it's worth the attention and rarely sees updates. I may have missed something somewhere along the line, but this seems to be the first version which plays .wmv files on my computers! It's great to have the much greater playback control flexibility that MPlayer offers aas compared to QuickTime Player in wmv. I DO WISH THEY'D PUT IN A "RECENT ITEMS" FILE-MENU ITEM, however. PhotoPresenter | Dec 13 2007 |
Nice whiz-bang presentation effects but on my brand new 2.8GHz AL iMac it is very very unstable, now crashing every few minutes. What's worse is that there is no file system involved with this app: you don't create files of any kind. You can only "Save" your work by quitting. I started a project in PhotoPresenter and quickly developed a habit of quitting after every significant change. If the prefs file gets corrupted and needs to be trashed, you trash all your ongoing projects because they don't exist anywhere else. I'm sorry I bought this program. The 'shareware' crippling made spending the 8 bucks all but mandatory, but it was money I wouldn't have spent. (Version 3.3b)

After that I poked around trying to see how I'd import my Mail boxes and settings and AFAIK it can't be done. Too bad: I was under the impression that this (V2.0.06) was a mature product. Attachment Adder | Aug 3 2007 |
ETNIER This seems to work well and is easy to install. One unanswered question, however, is how Attachment Adder, which is a Workflow item, handles the stupid problem of Mail's "Send Windows Friendly Attachments" checkbox. Send Windows Friendly Attachments" is seriously one of the most useless and irritating things Apple has ever come up with, but we still need to have confidence that the attachments sent by Attachment Adder will be readable by the recipient, regardless of platform. ETNIER It's almost impossible to believe that this program, vital for people who do wish to transmit files using the .rar format, is so incredibly difficult, not to say risky to install. And to charge $30.00!!! Installation instructions are not included in the package: you have to be on this page of comments to learn how to 'install'. "(give root:wheel ownership via 'sudo chown root:wheel ')":This is incomprehensible to me. "copy 'rar' and 'unrar' to '/usr/bin', copy 'default.sfx' to '/usr/lib/' and copy 'rarfiles.lst' to '/etc/'." A bit more easy to understand, but not for most Macintosh users. There are comments here from users who can't locate their usr/bin and similar files, not surprising given that those folders are invisible. IMHO any Mac developer who releases general-purpose software in such an arcane bundle of bits should be ashamed of themselves. Isn't this what an INSTALLER is for????? I guess these guys "own" the .rar format and so we're stuck with this, but it's just not fair. (Version 3.7)

CHIMP_MAN72_HOTMAIL.COM You're mistaking /usr/ for /Users/ or your Home folder. /usr/ is a hidden folder in the Computer folder. You can only access it by enabling hidden folders, or by pressing Shift+Command+G in Finder (or select Go to Folder from Finder's Go menu) and then type in "/usr/bin/" (minus the quotes). Your predicament shows exactly why the OP is right. (Version 3.7.1)

MRELCEE Agreed - it wouldn't take much for them to make a package installer to do this for you. As a matter of fact, 3-4 minutes if you are familiar with how to do it and 15 minutes tops if it's your first time.. I've done it myself to hand out to non-techie friends.. On the other hand, I'm rather grateful they do a Mac build at all and that the winrar key I bought ~8 years ago still works when i install it in /etc for this version. That is truly a liberal licensing scheme.. (Version 3.8b2)

ETNIER While Panic used to be friendly and responsive as they developed Unison in the year or so after its initial release, this has changed: fewer of the program's many significant shortcomings (in relation to 'professional' USENET applications like Thoth or Hogwasher) are being addressed, in releases which come very infrequently now. And in my experience they have stopped responding to support inquiries. I have no way of knowing, but from the evidence I think development of this program may be all but abandoned (Version 1.7.7)

ETNIER Thanks for your response here. Your response suggests that 'archiving' of IM contents will be re-enabled in the future. Is that correct? The previous version succesfully saved the last-used username between launches. This one doesn't. Strictly from the user's perspective, it would be helpful to be able to select from a dropdown list of stored usernames whether or not the user(s) choose to store a password. There may be a hard-and-fast connection from the developer's perspective, but people using the program would be helped by this change. Thanks again! (Version 3.0b1)

ETNIER If you sometimes choose to save the text of your IM conversations, this release will not work for you. That function has been removed from this release. Also: this release was unable to remember my login preferences: those relating to whether to save my password and to log in invisibly. This can represent compromised security for some users. Finally, the pulldown list of user names which appears at launch is broken in this release. Login names must be typed in manually. (Version 3.0b1)

KBALLARD The lack of archiving is known, but the other two issues should work perfectly fine. If you select save your password, it remembers your name in the dropdown and your login credentials for future use. If you don't select save your password, it doesn't remember your name or login credentials. Perhaps that's why the dropdown doesn't work for you? If you never tell it to save your password, it won't save the login names (after all, you generally want to save your own password but not, say, your friend's, and you don't need your friend's name in your dropdown). (Version 3.0b1)

KBALLARD Unfortunately, I can't exactly comment on what features will show up in future versions of Yahoo! Messenger. As for the drop down, the problem is if we put every single used name into the dropdown, that list could very quickly fill up with typos and once-off names (e.g. a friend comes over, wants to log in), and there'd be no way to remove them. And adding a preference to remove items from the list would be a fairly ugly way to solve the problem. Basically, if you use a name regularly, you should probably go ahead and tell it to save the password. You don't have to worry about security, the app actually saves a separate set of login credentials, not your raw password, and if anyone ever manages to steal your saved login credentials they'll only gain acccess to Messenger (and probably Address Book) and all you have to do is change your password and said credentials will become invalidated. It's a pretty secure system. (Version 3.0b1)

ETNIER "Also: problems communicating with (again: my ISP) the server, so that queued items fail to download on launch: the program has to be manually instructed time and again to seek for files it fails to obtain from the server." This is not clear, I realize. The scenario goes like this: for one reason or another, including the "relaunch for forgotten files" scenario, if Unison has a list of queued dowloads present upon launch, it often hits the ISP server so hard that all download requests but one are rejected, forcing the user to manually restart the rejected downloads by selecting them and hitting a "retry" button on the Transfers window. This is undoubtedly tied to nonstandard behavior on the server side, but Unison should be able to deal with it by now. (Version 1.7.5)

Unison | Jun 6 2006 |
ETNIER I moved from Thoth to Unison quite a while ago. Although it has done a great job of making the USENET experience user-friendly, the developers have not yet managed to address longstanding bugs which really get in the way. Biggest: the program (at least with my ISP server) loses track of what it's supposed to download, reporting a completed download queue when it's actually lost track of many files. IF YOU DON'T REMEMBER to then RELAUNCH Unison so that it can remember the components it lost track of, they stand an excellent chance of being flushed from the server before you figure out what's happened. Also: problems communicating with (again: my ISP) the server, so that queued items fail to download on launch: the program has to be manually instructed time and again to seek for files it fails to obtain from the server. Also: you cannot reply to a post unless it's lucky enough to have been sorted into Unison's arbitrary "Messages" category. All this categorization works against the power-user, and should be defeatable. I haven't gone back to Thoth yet, but little about this app has changed in the last year or so. I'm running out of patience. (Version 1.7.5)
