JollysFastVNC
Jan 20 2009

ESPIRIT  For me this is superior to Leopard's built-in VNC client simply because I have machines that cannot run Leopard. For example, I am typing this review out on a 500MHz Pismo from around 2000 which I have setup with Tiger, and it still runs beautifully. For computers such as this, JollysFastVNC is without a doubt the best free option available. Its lightweight and efficient enough to even be run on a machine as old as this one.

On my Leopard boxes I do use the built-in VNC client, but for all of my G3s and G4s running Tiger, this is the way to go.

ESPIRIT  Under 10.5 you can change the appearance of the Fast User Switch icon in the menubar within the Accounts preference pane without any 3rd party software.

When you go to the accounts panel, simply click "Login Options", check the "Enable fast user switching" box, then selection the view method you want from the drop-down menu below the box.

The choices are Full Name, Short Name, and Icon only, so its not quite as customizable as WinSwitch, but it performs the same basic features w/o any extra software.

Apple MacBook/MacBook Pro Software Update
Dec 21 2007

ESPIRIT  I have an odd problem with this update. First, it doesn't seem to actually do anything, and secondly (and probably because of the first point) it continually pops up as needing to be installed.

I get the software update message every single day saying i need to install this and every single time i download it and it just comes back the next day.

Anybody else had this problem?

Apple MacBook/MacBook Pro Software Update

DYRCONA  I have a black MacBook (if that matters) and have the same issue. Every time I do a software update, this update is there saying it needs to be installed. If I install it, it looks as though it is being installed, even saying that it is writing out the package receipt. However, next I check for updates, there it is to be installed again.

It's rather annoying.

My wife's MacBook (which is newer than mine) does not have this problem.

ESPIRIT  God cry more. I have a 2.33 C2D 15" which is going on 11 months old, and now even the lowly macbook has a higher RAM capacity and is cheaply configurable with much larger HD's AND has a faster FSB!

Its how technology works. If you, today, bought a brand new, top of the line, 2.6GHz 17" MBP with the higher resolution display, etc etc you would be saying the exact same thing 6 months from now! Be happy with what you have. If it isn't enough for you, then sell it and buy a new one. If you can't, then read the sentence before last again.

And like the others said, being "left out" is a good thing in this case. Firmware updates like this aren't just for fun, they are fixing problems with the current revision. Why would you WANT problems which needed fixing? If there aren't any issues, you should be glad and snicker at the wait-and-see'ers who have had issues which make updates such as this necessary.
