The reason Mail comes to the front is because it's hidden. If you close the Mail window or minimize it then this won't happen. This is a limitation with the Mail plugin system that's very hard to fix, though I will try to find a solution in the future. If your workflow requires hiding Mail then I agree that Herald probably won't work for you. But for people who just close or minimize Mail, then it will work fine.

ERIK HINTERBICHLER  Just a note about this:

Notifications won't appear if Mail.app is the active app. This is to prevent annoying notifications from appearing while you're working in Mail.

ERIK HINTERBICHLER  Is the Herald preference showing up in your Mail preferences? If not, there may have been a permissions issue when installing. I just released a new installer that should fix it, so try downloading that. If you still have problems, feel free to send me an email and we can try to fix it.
