TubeSight
Jun 27 2008

ENLIGHTENED411  *Note: TubeSight, formerly "vlogsnapz.producer", was originally released 9.3.2007. The developer's name was also changed from Vlogsnapz to Mind Sprockets. This explains why I had difficulty (at first) finding reviews outside of MU.com.

I had to search based on the original product name:

http://www.google.com/search?q=vlogsnapz.producer+Vlogsnapz+%7Ereview

I am disappointed that there is *NO* detail about what this product does at the developer's site. I do not have time to download it to figure out what it does. A screencast video of some of the major "live effects" being applied to a video would be really helpful and time-saving.

Q: Can these effects be applied to prerecorded videos or only to live sessions? [that would be nice]

A: ???

If you're looking for a good product (that's easy to use) to create quick videos I recommend iShowu:

LiteSwitch X
Jan 31 2008
***..

ENLIGHTENED411  Last year I downloaded (vsn 2.6) and tried it for a month. Here's my Review:

( Note: Apple's built-in App-Switcher is: [apple]+[tab] )

(+) PROS:

* + Multiple Hot-Key Activation Choices

o + Right-Mousers can more easily activate it ( e.g., [control]+[tab] )

o + And Likewise for Left-Mousers ( e.g., [control]+[return] )

* + You can EASILY step-navigate through apps by releasing and pressing the 2nd Hot-Key key (to Reverse direction press the [shift] key as the 2nd key instead).

* + Right-Click an App's icon to see Contextual Menu Options (or use Keyboard Shortcuts INSTEAD)

* + Provides MANY Options you can set in System Preferences

(-) CONS:

* - Can NOT [esc] from it IF Hot-Key is set to: [apple]+[tab]

* - If you've just hidden an app and then quickly depress and release the Hot-Key, it re-activates the Hidden App. It should NOT do that. What it should do instead is Select the Next ACTIVE App below the one on top (which is standard OS X behavior).

* - Developer never responded to my Important Email Inquiry (and why I never bought it)

* - NOT updated since 7-06 (1.5 yr)

* - When Intel Macs were released it took 1-YEAR for an Intel-compatible update

Summary ( RATING: 3 / 5 ): A real Time-Saver. It makes app-switching easier & brings new useful features into this process.

IF the Developer was responsive to emails and updated this app more frequently I'd raise my rating to 4 / 5.

What would Help? Surely these Enhancements would be meaningful:

1. SEGREGATE Active and Hidden Apps into Distinct Groupings wherein Active ones are navigated first. Either:

a. Place Active on LHS and Hidden to the RHS, OR

b. Place Active on Top and Hidden below in a 2nd list

2. If you HIDE an App (with LSX) it should Behave just like Mac OS and auto-select the front most Active App.

CRUCIAL to any software purchase is the Developer's commitment to their customers needs and wants. If a Developer is not giving adequate consideration to customer needs; and is not planning ahead of the upcoming OS changes; then their product is not a worthy investment.

* Usage Tip: In order to confidently rely on the use of the [esc] key I recommend you NOT use [apple]+[tab] as the designated Hot-Key.

LiteSwitch X
Oct 31 2008

STORMCHILD  Good, detailed list. Just one thing though -- pressing Esc to dismiss LiteSwitch works fine for me, and I use Command-Tab (aka "Apple"-Tab), so there must be some kind of specific issue there. Even so, this adds more weight to your point about how infrequently (and slowly) LiteSwitch gets updated. I just wish Apple's rip-off of LiteSwitch* was good enough that I could get rid of LiteSwitch, as in general I'm always trying to eliminate as many 3rd party tweaks and enhancements as possible.

* Let's face it, that's what it is, but sadly it's only a half-assed rip-off at that.

AIM for Mac
Dec 8 2007

ENLIGHTENED411  * How-to Use ADIUM instead of the Outdated

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)

Why use ADIUM instead of AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)?

1) Because AIM hasn't been updated since 18 Feb 2004 (almost 4 yrs)!

2) Because you can use ADIUM to maintain your AIM presence online

ADIUM is not only Free (donations helpful), it is up-to-date and one of the top universal chat clients. Universal in that it interfaces with all chat accounts (AIM, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo!, Google Talk, and more)

Get ADIUM right here on MacUpdate:

ENLIGHTENED411  I do *not* like it when it's hard to find useful descriptive documentation @ a developer's site (like details n' screenshots) as is the case here. <> I can also tell just by the screenshots that this is a difficult to learn and negotiate product. <> Developer should have a *screencast* of the product "in action" (but alas does not) which would save very valuable time (a 3-5 min screencast would show/tell me what I need} in my decision-making. I *wish* I had the time to dive into this and try it. <> I recommend "iShowU" for screencasts that are easy to make and publish. <> Yet another app on which the magic word is: PASS.

PageSender
Aug 21 2007

ENLIGHTENED411  There are STILL good reasons for having a FAX Service like this: Legal Documents, Medical Records and for serving the needs of a Virtual Office (CMS based). A Virtual Office you say? One of my long-distance business associates is a hunt-n'-pecker typer, so he's better served by WRITING some of his documents and faxing them. Because PageSender digitizes received documents, they end up being stored online (for viewing and annotating by office mates) or forwarded to a typing service.

I've evaluated two other SmileOnMyMacs other products to date and I was pleasantly impressed with both.

Likewise, in researching PageSender today I see that the professional reviews, and the customer feedback at VersionTracker and MacUpdate, that this is a very good product. Consider me SOLD.

My only negative comment is that, IMO, thier software is overpriced.

Thank you MU

Keyboard Maestro
Aug 16 2007

ENLIGHTENED411  With software, I wish that more Developers would create a Screencast to show us their product in action. That's what's missing here. Often what might amount to an hour of My Time to evaluate and assess a product could have been accomplished in a few minutes of watching a good screencast.

I recommend iShowU for screencasts that are easy to make and publish.

ENLIGHTENED411  This looks like it might be useful in distilling repetitive actions into meaningful macros. I'll download and try it.

Instead of keyboard shortcuts, I am MORE interested in building custom MENUS to do what I wanna' do.

ENLIGHTENED411  I've been using Overflow for 6 months. It is an indispensible tool for extending the dock; for organizing my projects, applications, folders and files; and for its Finder portals to my folders. It's a real time saver!
