DRDUL After years of building websites with a Photoshop plug-in (and enduring numerous crashes and glitches, and spending many hours manually fixing the resulting code), I went looking for a stand-alone app. Although I appreciate iWeb's simplicity, I wanted more than what it offers, so I decided to give Shutterbug a whirl. Wow! I wish I'd tried it sooner, but better late than never! Shutterbug gets full points for stability, speed and value. It's fairly easy to use, but there is a learning curve. After working my way through the manual and playing around with it for a couple of hours, I was able to quickly build a web site from scratch. As a testament to its ease of use, I've been able to do everything I want to do without resorting to searching the on-line support forum or contacting the developer. It is incredibly easy to modify or add to a website once it has been created in Shutterbug. I used to delay updating my website because it was a tedious exercise, but with Shutterbug, changes take just a few minutes. Shutterbug has almost all the features I want. The only noticeable missing feature for me is the ability to easily modify the colour of a piece of text within a larger block of text. It would also be nice to have more options for including and excluding items within navigation elements, but in the grand scheme of things that's only a minor complaint. Overall, I am one satisfied customer! (Version 2.5.6)

Reveal | Nov 6 2009 |
DRDUL Reveal still works in Snow Leopard 10.6.1 -- sort of. It displays EXIF information just fine, but the thumbnail image is all crazy colours and noise. Too bad, as it's a great little app otherwise. (Version 1.2)

Adobe Services Update | Oct 30 2009 |
DRDUL I couldn't agree more. I'll be sticking with Photoshop because nothing else comes close enough (for my needs), but it's the end of the road for my other Adobe apps, as there are now several decent alternatives available from developers who listen to their customers and update their apps more than once a year. As for Ps, I am hoping and praying that CS5 runs faster on 10.6 than CS4, which has slowed to a crawl (how Adobe managed that when all my other apps run faster on 10.6, I cannot even begin to imagine). DataLore | Oct 10 2009 |
DRDUL This is a very promising app. It needs only three more features: • Quicklook (with a spacebar hotkey as in the Finder) • Direct access from within DataLore to the Finder's Get Info panel • The ability to save search expressions and easily access them (ideally from a dropdown menu in the toolbar) (Version 1.0)

Fantasktik | Sep 27 2009 |
DRDUL I like this, despite its similarity to the Windoze taskbar. :-) I am using it on a Mac Pro with dual 30-inch monitors. My left monitor has the menubar at top and the dock at the bottom. My right monitor now has Fantasktik at the top. When I'm working on the right monitor and want to switch windows or apps, my mouse now has an alternative to the dock that requires less movement to reach. I like how Fantasktik provides an always-on display of which apps are active and what windows are open, even windows that have been minimized to the app's dock icon. The preview feature is nice, but the way it is coded means that previews of short wide windows appear much larger than previews of tall narrow windows. I have the preview size set as large as possible, and checking into the plist file I see a figure of 275, which appears to be the maximum height of the preview image in pixels. The developer should code it so that this number applies as a maximum to both the height and width of the window, and should allow for sizes of up to, say, 500 pixels. This change would better "equalize" the size of preview windows, regardless of how narrow or wide, short or tall they are. I like that the colours of the Fantasktik bar can be adjusted. I fiddled around with them, and discovered that I can turn off the background colour by making the opacity of it 0%, which allows windows under the bar to show through. This is particularly useful, as on a 30-inch monitor my Fantasktik bar is often only half full. There's no point obscuring part of the screen with a blank bar. I also like that all the windows of an app can be collapsed into an app's icon in the Fantasktik bar by double-clicking the icon. I use this for apps for which I typically only have one window open, like Path Finder and 1Password. Fantasktik can be set to remember the collapsed/expanded state of every app, so Path Finder and 1Password will always appear collapsed into the app icon (unless I choose to expand the windows out of the icon). There's so much to like, but there's one glaring omission. As others have requested, Fantasktik desperately needs a hot-key for keyboard access, and the ability to navigate between windows with the keyboard. If this feature was incorporated, I would assign the hot key to one of the buttons on my Logitech mouse, and would use SteerMouse to assign the scroll wheel to the arrow keys (or whatever) to allow me to navigate between windows. It may already be possible to use the scroll wheel this way, but if so, I couldn't figure out how to do it. The current version of Fantasktik is not without bugs. I experienced weird behaviour when I right-clicked and selected "Exposé" or "Close Window." Some of the time this would work, but other times it caused A Better Finder Attributes to launch (huh?) or some weird window I've never seen before to open. Despite these glitches and the lack of a hot key, I'll probably buy Fantasktik when my 15-day trial period ends. It already offers enough functionality to justify the $10 price. If a hot key and keyboard navigation are added, and if the weird behaviour on right-click is fixed, it will be a great deal at $10. (Version 1.4)

iTubeX Ultimate | Sep 25 2009 |
DRDUL Joris (the developer) has been very responsive, and has incorporated a few of my suggestions into version 5.5, including the ability to save PNG images and the gear button to save my mouse the long trip to the menu bar. iTubeX is a great video downloader, and is also a good browser. The ability to easily exchange URLs with Safari (another feature that is accessible through the gear button) helps make it even easier to use. An excellent app! (Version 5.5)

DRDUL The idea sounds great in principle, but I couldn't get it to work. I launched the app, clicked the OK button at the prompt where it tells me it's running in demo mode, and then it froze. I had to force-quit. I tried it again with the same result, so I dragged it to the trash. (Version 1.7)

DRDUL Thanks for reviving this. It looks great so far — except for the horrible olive-green highlighting. How about a prefs setting to let users choose another colour? :-) BTW, it's a minor detail, but in version 0.4.1, a customized toolbar resets to the default configuration the next time the app is launched. Also, TVShows doesn't remember the window size or location. Again, these are minor complaints for an otherwise elegantly simple and easy-to-use app. (Version 0.4.1)

I'm always happy to consider any feature requests people might have. (Version 0.4.1)

FinderPop | Sep 22 2009 |
DRDUL An FYI for anyone who is (like I was) suffering without FinderPop on OS X 10.6, FolderGlance is a great alternative. It offers features similar to FinderPop and the developer is as responsive as Turly is. The only downside to FolderGlance (as compared with FinderPop) is that it costs $20, but I am so dependent on contextual menus to get things done that I gladly paid the price! I'll still be keeping an eye out for a 10.6-compatble version of FinderPop, but in the meantime, it's nice to have an option that allows me to use contextual menus on 10.6. (Version 2.2)

FolderGlance | Sep 22 2009 |
DRDUL When I upgraded to OS X 10.6, I had to abandon a few applications, but none of them were as difficult to say goodbye to as FinderPop. Turly (the developer of FinderPop) may eventually release a 10.6-compatible version, but he's recovering from a bad accident, so it could be a while. I couldn't wait, as I am completely dependent on contextual menus to open files and move them around, so I went looking for an alternative and discovered FolderGlance. What a great app! It offers all the features I need, and I prefer the way it is configured as compared with FinderPop. The developer has been extremely responsive as well, which is always nice to know when making a financial commitment to an application by purchasing a licence. Highly recommended! (Version 2.5.2)

Sharpshooter | Sep 15 2009 |
DRDUL This is a potentially useful app, but it needs a few more features to make it easy to use: - The Sharpshooter window should remember its size. Currently, the window opens too small to see the screenshot clearly, which is necessary when trying to distinguish between multiple similar-looking screenshots. - A "zoom in" button to enlarge screenshots to 100% without enlarging the window would be useful, along with a hand tool to slide the image around in the window. A corresponding "zoom out" button would restore the image to a size that fits the window. - If a Sharpshooter window is already open, then subsequent screenshots should appear within the same window, perhaps accompanied by a display of thumbnails to move from one image to another. - It would be nice to be able to specify a number of favorite folders that would be available in the dropdown menu when choosing a location to save the screenshot. DRDUL I'ma long-time Saft user, but didn't want to buy another licence just to upgrade to a 32-bit Snow Leopard version, so I gave Glims version 1 beta 21 a try, and discovered that it's great! All the features of Saft that I need (keywords in the address bar, bookmark separators, force new windows to open as tabs, auto-close of the damn download window), plus much better search features. And all this in a 64-bit version. I am a happy guy! (Version 1.0b20)

DRDUL I just switched to Glims from Saft, and IMO it's a significant improvement. DRDUL This is an indispensable app for me. One of my primary uses is changing the date and time on downloaded email attachments to match the time the email was sent (for easier cross-referencing), but I use it for adjusting all sorts of attributes. The developer has been responsive, adding a couple of features I requested that make it easier to use. The only thing I can fault is the name, which is unnecessarily long and complicated. Every time I update this app, I end up dragging the new version out of the DMG onto my desktop and changing the name to "ABFA" before dragging it into my Applications folder. (Version 4.37)

Fresh | Sep 8 2009 |
DRDUL I really like this app. I used to use the "Today" search in the Finder sidebar all the time, but it was a PITA to keep customizing it to exclude certain file types (it shows *everything* by default). Fresh does the same thing but better: • I can activate it with an easy-to-hit hotkey (Control-Space in my case). • It shows me the 15 most recent items (I'm on a 30-inch monitor — you'll see fewer items on a smaller screen) sorted in order of use. • It gives me decent-size previews of each item, and I can quick look them. • I can drag items from Fresh to move them. • I can easily exclude items and locations from being displayed, so what i am left looking at is only the items I want to see. • It automatically melts away once I don't need it any more. But the best part is the Cooler, where I can hold items I want to access later. This feature alone is worth the price of admission. And to top it off, the Cooler will automatically purge the oldest items when it runs out of room, saving me the effort. There are only a couple of minor things I'd like to see improved: • A larger font for the tooltip that displays the full file name on mouseover, and an easier way to distinguish the file name from the path. • An optional colour scheme that isn't so hard on my eyes. :-) (Version 1.1.4)

iTubeX Ultimate | Sep 8 2009 |
DRDUL I just purchased iTubeX Ultimate, and was pleased to discover that it can save web pages as JPG images. This was an unexpected bonus, as I have been looking for a good app to save web pages (I used to use Web Snapper as a Safari plug-in, but can't with 64-bit Safari in OS X 10.6). Every other web-page-saving app I tried requires that I drag a URL into it, which doesn't work for web pages that display financial information or UPS tracking results, for example. Because iTubeX is a browser, I can navigate to a web page to display the information I want, and then grab a shot of the complete page as a JPG. I've asked the dev if he could add support for saving pages as PNG images, so hopefully that feature will be added. (Version 5.4)

DRDUL I agree. I use ABFR and ABFA, and how I deal with the clunky names is that when installing or upgrading, I drag the app out of the DMG onto my desktop, rename it to "ABFR" or "ABFA," and then drag it into the Applications folder. I'm not big on the contextual menu items, so I skip that part, as well as the pref pane. I may yet add a Service to the contextual menu in 10.6, but only if I can rename it to "ABFR" or create one by that name with Automator. Other than the name issue, both ABFR and ABFA are great apps. I switched to ABFR from Name Mangler, which is also a great app and is free, but which currently doesn't work properly on 10.6. (Version 8.27)

SneakPeek Photo | Sep 3 2009 |
DRDUL SneakPeek Photo is a useful enhancement to QuickLook, and version 1.0 is a good start. I won't be buying it at this time, however. The main reason is that it chokes on 16-bit grayscale TIFFs, of which I have many (it handles 16-bit colour TIFFs okay). It also doesn't seem to even want to touch PSD files, as they appear in the plain vanilla QuickLook window, not the SneakPeek Photo window. The other reason I won't be buying it just yet is that the EXIF, GPS, IPTC and other pop-up info panels are information overload. I would really like some way of customizing these and turning off the fields I don't want to see. As it is, it's difficult to find the information I'm looking for among a dozen or so items. Web Snapper | Sep 2 2009 |
DRDUL I've tried several similar apps, but use Web Snapper for one reason — it captures what is currently visible in Safari. Other apps like Paparazzi require you to enter or drag a URL into them, and then they grab the web page. That works most of the time, but not with some web pages that display financial information, tracking results, and that sort of thing. The reason Web Snapper works when others don't is that it's a Safari plug-in. Of course, that's changed with Snow Leopard. To continue using the Web Snapper Safari plug-in, you have to run Safari in 32-bit mode. I'd prefer not to, so until Tasty Apps is able to develop a fix (they're working on it), I'll run Web Snapper as a stand-alone app, like the others. (Version 2.3.5)

Jar | Sep 2 2009 |
DRDUL I like this. So much so that I've uninstalled Safari Cookies, and will be buying a licence for Jar. My first reaction when reading the description was that it didn't give me enough control over my cookies, the way other cookie managers do. Then I stopped and thought about how I use Safari Cookies. After installing it, I took the (not inconsiderable) time to go through all the cookies on my Mac and flag those which I wanted to keep, before removing the rest. Since then, I haven't re-reviewed my selected favorites, as it's too tedious, and because it must be done manually, I was only cleaning out unwanted cookies every month or so. In comparison, Jar does it all automatically. I have Safari set to remove items from my history after a month, so Jar will nuke the cookies sooner than I would have using Safari Cookies. If a site remains in my history, or I've bookmarked it, then it automatically becomes a favorite, saving me effort of flagging it as such. All in all, Jar is a simple and effective way to manage cookies. The only improvement I'd like to see is support for other browsers. I use Camino occasionally when Safari chokes on a website (like MU Promo, of all things), and it would be nice to know that my Camino cookies are being nuked, too. (Version 1.0)

DRDUL I was interested in Opera primarily for the mail component. My wife uses Thunderbird, and I've been looking for a better mail app for her. The Opera UI is nice, and the unified mailbox is great. But the lack of integration with the OS X Address Book is a deal breaker. Opera imports contacts from Address Book, but any subsequent changes in Address Book aren't caught by Opera, and if you add a contact in Opera it doesn't get synced back to Address Book. DRDUL RAW Developer is a must-have for me. I shoot with an Olympus E-P1 and a Panasonic LX3, and the RAW files from both of these cameras are corrected for barrel distortion when converted in Adobe Camera Raw, SilkyPix, Olympus Master and most other RAW converters. RAW Developer doesn't apply any corrections, which enables me to apply however much (or little) correction I want in Photoshop, and also enables me to recover additional bits of the image around the edges. The workflow in RAW Developer is similar to Adobe Camera Raw, which makes it easy and fast for me to use. The image preview updates as corrections are applied, and the result is an image that is as good as or better than what I can get from ACR. Image settings are saved in files with a .rdsf extension, so they don't conflict with the .xml files created by ACR. The only other RAW converter I could find that doesn't apply corrections to images during conversion is Raw Photo Processor. I have used RPP several times and even donated to unlock additional features, but I gave up after a while, as I found it just too difficult. The UI is awkward, the documentation doesn't explain things very well, the preview does not update automatically, and I never could get the highlight recovery feature to work properly. In comparison, RAW Developer is a pleasure to use. My only (minor) complaint about RAW Developer is that the documentation is somewhat out of date (it appears to be for version 1.4). As a result, there is no explanation of a few settings, but in most cases I have been able to figure out what they do through trial and error (although I'm at a loss to guess what "TC Shadow" means). FinderPop | Aug 20 2009 |
DRDUL Turly (the developer) was unfortunately involved in a collision with a bus a couple of months ago, and as a result has warned FinderPop users not to expect a 10.6-compatible version for a while. See http://www.fnarr.net/fp/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17 for details. Here's hoping Turly recovers quickly and completely. Like many others, I have become totally dependent on FinderPop, and will be at a complete loss when I upgrade to Snow Leopard next month. I would welcome any suggestions for apps that offer some of the functionality and ease of use of FinderPop, that I could make do with until FinderPop is upgraded for OS X 10.6. (Version 2.2)

GyazMail | Aug 19 2009 |
DRDUL The developer is still actively developing GyazMail. I emailed him yesterday asking about support for Snow Leopard, and he responded that he's testing GyazMail on 10.6, and mentioned a new version. I then asked him if the new version will include HTML message composition, but haven't received a response yet. I will add another reply when I do. I tried Postbox and hated it. It looks good on the surface, but from what I can tell, it's some variation of Thunderbird underneath. It has all the same clunky pref settings and annoying stand-alone address book that Thunderbird has, and it performed even worse (despite importing all settings from Thunderbird). I much prefer the look, simplicity and function of GyazMail (as does my wife, who would be the one using it). It's only the lack of HTML message composition holding her back. (Version 1.5.8)

DRDUL This is a nice email client that resembles Apple Mail in many ways (and I mean that as a compliment). Except for one glaring omission. As far as I can tell (unless I've somehow overlooked a hidden setting), there's no support for composing HTML emails. I want to switch my wife over to GyazMail from Thunderbird, and although she likes everything else about it, the lack of HTML support in composing messages is a deal-breaker for her. I'm hoping the developer adds this feature soon, so I can drag Thunderbird to the trash. (Version 1.5.8)

MAVI GöZ I prefer this mail client over all the clients I used so far (Thunderbird, Mulberry, GNUmail.app, Apple Mail, Correo and PostBox) for several reasons: * It is native Cocoa (thus relatively fast and behaves like it should). * In contrast to Apple Mail my IMAP folders of my various mail accounts are displayed as they are – no grouping of inboxes and trash cans of different accounts and no crazy smart folders. * My main account has the ability to filter / sort mails directly on the server side so it is nice that GyazMail checks ALL the folders and marks any single folder that contains new messages. * It can automatically break lines after a user defined number of characters when sending a message (my university requires line breaks after 72 characters and text only messages – ways better than HTML from my point of view). In general GyazMail is very lightweight in compare to other clients and easy to use (not too many icons and colorful blinking elements) but still provides many useful options. Alll in all well balanced. What I am still looking for is a more efficient and faster implemetation of IMAP handling. (Version 1.5.8)

DRDUL Tried it. Found it didn't improve my search results and many of the recommendations/refinements led me off on a wild goose chase. VueScan | Aug 11 2009 |
DRDUL It depends on what scanner you're using, but in general, VueScan has an easier-to-use interface, offers additional features and produces better results, particularly if you enable all the advanced features. I started using VueScan years ago when I bought a film scanner. VueScan controlled the film scanner better than Nikon's software, it gave me more options to tweak the image to get a better scan, it enabled me to merge multiple scans and achieve greater bit depth, and I could save the raw scan data so I only had to scan a slide once. I have since sold the film scanner as I scanned all the slides I wanted to. I now only use VueScan on an occasional basis, when I want to get the best result from my Canon flatbed scanner. Most of the time all I need is a quick-and-dirty scan to email or archive something, and for that I use Canon's "one click" software because it's faster. (Version 8.5.23)

YummySoup! | Aug 8 2009 |
DRDUL In an earlier comment, I noted that the shared library feature was buggy, and could overwrite a newer shared version of the YS library with an older local version. I have since figured out how to reliably share my YS library between three Macs, and even though it's a workaround, I feel that I can now give YS the five stars it deserves. I can now retract my earlier recommendation to avoid YS if you want to share recipes between Macs, provided that you set it up the way I have. The shared library resides in a file called YummySoup! Shared Library.YSSL. I moved this file to my Dropbox, which syncs it between my Macs. That's the easy part. The challenge is to get YS to open the shared library each time, and not the local library. How I do that is by launching the YummySoup! Shared Library.YSSL file, instead of launching YS itself. I even went so far as to copy the icon from YS to the shared library file, and create an alias to it called YummySoup. The way it looks like the YS app, so that even if my brain stops working for a moment, there is almost no chance I could ever launch YS directly, which avoids the problem of YS overwriting the shared library with the local library. I've had it set up like this for a few months, with no problems. As an aside, the nice thing about using Dropbox for syncing is that it keeps older versions of files for 30 days, so if anything ever goes wrong, I can retrieve the correct version of the shared library. DRDUL Yes, it works on 10.5.7. As Daniel noted, it crashes when attempting to add a file by clicking the icon at top left, but files can be dragged into PDFLab without problems. I used it to remove the password from a camera manual so I could add bookmarks (it's unbelievable that in 2009, manufacturers are still producing 150-page PDFs without bookmarks). Select the file in the PDFLab window, press Command-R and a new password-free version is created. Fantastic! (Version 2.0.3r2)

DRDUL To clarify my earlier comment, where the font size is particularly an issue for me is the file path displayed at top right. The other fonts are small but legible, whereas I can barely see the file path. Perhaps a status bar or some other way of displaying the file path would provide more space to use a larger font? Also, i should have added the suggestion of undo capability with a file delete feature. Sure, i can always restore the file from the trash (which will be easier with the "put back" feature in Snow leopard), but that means I have to be able to remember which file(s) I deleted. Undo capability within DD would be an essential part of a file delete feature. (Version 1.3.3)

DRDUL Daisy Disk has the best UI of these types of apps. Easier to understand, easier to navigate and easier to see details. Quick Look integration is great! The only things holding me back from buying a licence are: • Inability to delete files directly from Daisy Disk • Graphic doesn't display as large as possible within the DD window, which means it's sometimes difficult to see details • Inability to set a (slightly) larger font size This is an app with lots of potential. I'll be keeping an eye on DD as it develops. (Version 1.3.3)

DAISYDISK Greetings, DRDUL. Direct file deletion is planned. As you may notice, it's not easy to make file deletion easy and comfortable for all situations from local files to remote servers without giving one a perfect "mess my data" tool (error-proof is one of such). We think we have a good solution and it will definitely appear in future versions. We've already thought of some further display optimizations. If our experiments succeed, you'll see some of these changes in the nearest future. We usually tweak map display a little each release :) As for font size, feel free to tell us more about the issue. Write to support and I'll definitely pay close attention to this problem. (Version 1.3.3)

Saft | Jul 9 2009 |
DRDUL Wow! So many complaints that every Safari update breaks Saft. That's to be expected. The same thing happens with other apps that hack Safari, like 1Password. It's no big deal. Wait a day before installing the latest Safari update, and by then Saft (and 1Password and others) will have been updated. IMO it's an negligible inconvenience given the essential functionality that Saft adds to Safari. Every once in a while I use Safari on a Mac that doesn't have Saft installed, and it's no fun at all. Saft is an excellent app, it is rock solid, and updates are delivered within 24 hours of a new Safari version. I can't ask for anything more. (Version 11.0.1)

GrandPerspective | Jul 7 2009 |
DRDUL Nice app, and you can't beat the price. I'd like to see one improvement that (for me, at least) would improve the functionality of GP -- the ability to customize colours. It would be great to be able to create additional, custom colour palettes, and to be able to change the colour of the rectangle that highlights the selected files/folders. My eyes might not be as good as others', because I find it difficult to see the rectangle, and there's no built-in colour palette that provides sufficient contrast in a pleasing combination of colours. If I could create my own colour scheme, GP would be easier for me to use. (Version 1.0)

ERIBAN You cannot edit the color palettes from GrandPerspective. However, the color palettes are stored in the standard Mac color list file format so you can edit the palettes and add new ones using a color list editor that supports that format. An example is the ColorListEditor provided by Modesitt Software. Simply store the new palettes inside the GrandPerspective palettes folder (GrandPerspective.app/Contents/Resources/Palettes) and you can use the palette the next time you start the application. FileBrowse | Jul 4 2009 |
DRDUL I purchased a FileBrowse license primarily because of the UI -- it's gorgeous! It's also easy to use (check the developer's website for instructions and some good tips) and fast. At this stage (version 1.2), FileBrowse is a file browser and nothing more. It really, really needs some basic file management capabilities (flagging, moving and trashing files) to be useful for reviewing and selecting photos and other files. I contacted the developer, and he says that file management is planned to be added, but isn't certain when, as he's working on other things right now. Maybe if more people request that he add file management capabilities (hint, hint!) we'll see them added to FileBrowse sooner rather than later. (Version 1.1)

Mac DVDRipper Pro | Jun 30 2009 |
DRDUL Wow! Mac DVDRipper Pro was able to successfully rip a DVD with a really bad scratch that neither RipIt, MTR 3.0 nor Handbrake could rip. The $10 price tag is a bargain compared to RipIt and MTR 3.0, especially given that Mac DVDRipper Pro was to rip a DVD that the others couldn't. I'm a very happy guy! It's a minor detail, but I also like that Mac DVDRipper Pro saves the resulting rip as a package that opens with DVD Player by default, rather than a plain folder. (Version 1.4)

xPad | Jun 25 2009 |
DRDUL xPad is a nice note-taking app. I like how it works with multiple documents, which can be categorized as well. I also like that it can handle inserted images, and export documents in RTF or RTFD formats. Despite all these nice features, for my purposes it won't replace TextEdit. The main reason is that documents are saved automatically to a folder in ~/Library/Application Support. The only way to save a document elsewhere is to export it, but then I end up with two versions — the one within xPad and the exported version. There's also no option to save documents anywhere other than the default folder. If I could specify a different default folder, I could save documents in my Dropbox, and sync 'em between my Macs. TubeTV | Jun 21 2009 |
DRDUL I tried just about every YouTube downloader, and TubeTV was the one that I stayed with. I wanted one that was easy enough for my wife to use, yet offered enough options for downloading and converting. I like that the TubeTV window emulates a browser (rather than the iTunes-type windows of some other apps) and that URLs can be easily grabbed from Safari. I also liked that it worked, which surprisingly wasn't the case with a few other apps I tried (for various reasons, they choked on the high-quality FLV video I was testing them with, whereas TubeTV downloaded and converted the video without a problem). ScreenSharingMenulet | Jun 18 2009 |
DRDUL I have tried previous versions of ScreenSharingMenulet several times, but each time I tried it I uninstalled it within hours. The reason was that the list of local hosts used to take a long time to refresh, by which time I could have initiated screen sharing through the Finder and been well on my way. Well, version 1.6 fixes all that. I am guessing that it's the new "static mode" feature described in the release notes. Whatever it is, now all local hosts appear immediately. There's no delay whatsoever, and the list refreshes immediately when computers join and leave the local network. ScreenSharingMenulet now has a permanent place in my menu bar. My only (minor) complaint is that there is no way to customize the display of information. I would prefer not to see the IP addresses for each host, and would welcome an option to turn them off. I'd also like an option to not show the Recent Hosts menu. (Version 1.6)

AppCleaner | Jun 18 2009 |
DRDUL Despite having purchased a licence for AppZapper a few years ago, I now use AppCleaner exclusively. The big reason I switched is that AppCleaner will successively delete apps without the need to re-authenticate when used from a non-admin account. Authenticate once, and then you can delete as many apps as you want without typing your admin password over and over again (eventually, after about 5 minutes, you'll need to re-authenticate). HoudahGeo | May 29 2009 |
DRDUL A very good app for geocoding photos. I code most photos by hand, as I am typically shooting in urban areas where my GPS logger's accuracy isn't very good. The ability to manually code photos using Google Earth is fantastic. My only complaint is the small preview size when geocoding. A "quick look" feature within HoudahGeo would be helpful, as I often need to check the details of a photo to determine exactly where it was taken, in order to correctly geocode it. (Version 2.2.6)

HoudahGeo | May 29 2009 |
DRDUL I just discovered a great use for HoudahGeo that has nothing to do with GPS. I shot a bunch of photos with the camera set to the wrong date (2008 instead of 2009). The photos are in DNG format, and I couldn't find any way to edit the dates in the embedded EXIF data, other than the command line utility ExifTools. Then I remembered that HoudahGeo uses ExifTools to write EXIF data. Sure enough, I was able to shift the dates in all my DNG files by one year, without adding GPS coordinates. To do this, I simply imported the images and in the "Camera Setup" dialog, indicated that the camera was running 31536000 seconds slow (the number of seconds in one year). The timestamps for all the photos were rest to the correct dates. I then wrote EXIF data to the original files. (Version 2.2.6)

DiskWarrior | May 19 2009 |
DRDUL I have come to regard DiskWarrior as an essential app. Sure it's pricey and there's no demo, but in my experience, the $100 cost has paid for itself many times over. I use DW every month or so to keep my Macs fit and trim. Most importantly, I always use DW before a OS upgrade, and every upgrade has been problem-free. I used to run DW from the CD, but soon realized that it was much faster to run it from an external drive cloned with SuperDuper! Doing so also avoids the need to buy a newer version of the CD from Alsoft when you buy a new Mac. (Version 4.1.1)

iCal Reply Checker | May 15 2009 |
DRDUL I've been using this for a while on my Mac Pro. This week I'm travelling with my MacBook Pro, on which I forgot to install iCal Reply Checker. After not being able to properly manage iCal's behaviour with two meeting invites, I couldn't stand it any more. I downloaded and installed iCal Reply Checker and all is well with the world. The moral of the story: don't leave home without it! Why do I find it indispensable? Because far too many people mess up their meeting invites, especially when they reschedule or cancel. Maybe it's because most of them are using Outlook. iCal likes to reply to everything, and as a result I looked like a doofus because I'd be firing out replies left, right and centre. With iCal Reply Checker, I have the option of preventing iCal from replying to botched meeting invites. (Version 1.2.1)

I purchased EasyCrop because all the controls are available and visible at once, it is easy and intuitive to use, and as an added bonus, screenshot capability is built in. CuteClips | Apr 13 2009 |
DRDUL I'm posting this as a comment rather than a 5-star review, because I already posted a 5-star review a couple of years ago. CuteClips continues to be my favourite clipboard manager, and Karsten continues to be a responsive developer. Just for the fun of it, I had a look at some of the other popular clipboard apps, and for my needs, none of them compare. What I like about CuteClips is its simplicity, yet it offers the features that I want: • Direct pasting (rather than just putting the selected clip on the clipboard as some other apps do) • The option of stripping formatting and pasting plain text • The ability to make clips "sticky" and assign numeric shortcuts • A clean and attractive appearance (Version 3.0b22)

Follow the link in the DMG for downloadable icons as well as instructions on making your own. @Thoth: Mouse Locator does what you want. DRDUL As a previous reviewer noted, running iDefrag on a Mac with Time Machine enabled results in Time Machine backing up many of the defragged files. Too bad I didn't realize this before I ran iDefrag. Time Machine is now backing up a whopping 371 GB of files, none of which have actually changed. My 1 TB Time Machine volume was full, which means I have now lost a whole bunch of backups from several months ago so that Time Machine can squeeze in 371 GB of not-at-all-new files. Because of this, I will no longer be using iDefrag. I'd rather have a fragmented disk and keep my old backups. (Version 1.6.8)

myTracks | Feb 27 2009 |
DRDUL I use myTracks because it offers two features that I haven't found in any other app: I can edit GPX tracks. I have started to use a GPS logger to geocode photos, but find that in the city with tall buildings all around, it sometimes"drifts" by 10 or 20 metres from my actual position. Rather not geocode a photo with an erroneous location, I can edit the track before geocoding. My only request is the ability to edit multiple points at once, rather than one-by-one. I can determine where I was at a specific time, and I can determine what time I was at a specific point. And I can do this from the raw GPX data, without having to convert to KML and use Google Earth (which doesn't work as well as myTracks for this purpose, anyway). My only request (and it may be a limitation of Google Maps) is a higher zoom level so I can see more details. (Version 1.6dev4)

DRDUL Not sure where all the earlier reviews went, so I'll add another raving recommendation. FinderPop is one of my favourite apps. I use it constantly to move files around, launch apps and set file attributes. It is particularly useful for me because I use two 30-inch screens, which means that without FinderPop I'd have to move my mouse all over the place to reach the menubar, the dock or a Finder window. Instead, everything is right where my cursor is with a simple right-click of the mouse. Not only is FinderPop a great app, but the dev has been very responsive and helpful with the occasional problem, which have been resolved in newer versions. Time for me to donate again! DRDUL I have been looking for a simple to do list app for a long time. Up 'til now I've been using Check Off, but the two problems I had with that app are that it's tied to the menubar (getting in the way of other apps), and there's no easy way to sync the data between my Macs. I finally stumbled across TaskPaper, and I love it! It floats in its own window, so I can position my to do list anywhere on my screen. I'm a Dropbox user, so syncing is as easy as saving the to do list to my Dropbox. Most of all, though, I love the clean interface and simplicity of use. The screencast on the developer's website is a great intro to TaskPaper. One extremely useful thing the dev doesn't mention in the screencast, but which I found in the (very good) user's guide is that you can use the Tab key to indent tasks and notes, which will then be attached to the parent task (and move with it). I also like that the appearance can be easily customized. The only tweaking I had to do to the "Standard" template was to bump up the base font a bit, and change the colour in which tags are displayed. One minor complaint is that although I used the preferences pane to tweak the font sizes and colours, I would have preferred to edit the template file directly, but could not find any documentation on the codes used in the file. All in all, a fantastic app which has made it much easier for me to organize tasks. (Version 2.1)

DRDUL The latest "experimental" builds of Dropbox (which is currently at ver 0.6.434) have apparently included a feature which automatically purges all but the last three days worth of files from the cache, so this app may no longer be needed. (Version 1.1)

ChronoSync | Jan 5 2009 |
DRDUL I've been using ChronoSync for the past 18 months, since I switched to the Mac. In selecting ChronoSync for backups, I tried pretty much every backup app out there. Some were pretty good, but none offered the ease-of-use combined with the flexibility and power of ChronoSync. The upgrade to OS X 10.5 introduced some instabilities when I used ChronoSync to back up to my iDisk and other WebDAV servers. I have now tested version 4, and it appears that ChronoSync can handle WebDAV connections without difficulty. I also noticed that ChronoSync 4 is way faster when backing up to network volumes and my iDisk. The interface is prettier, too, which is always important with Mac software. :-) All in all, version 4 is a significant improvement and a worthwhile upgrade. The fact that it's a free upgrade blows my mind! (Version 4.0)

HoudahSpot | Jan 5 2009 |
DRDUL HoudahSpot makes Spotlight usable. I rarely ever use Spotlight the Apple way, as it's far easier and faster to find files with HoudahSpot. A few minutes to set up some pre-defined templates, add them to a stack in the dock, and you're all set! the developer has also been excellent in responding to questions, bugs and feature requests. This app is what Spotlight should have been. (Version 2.3.3)

YummySoup! | Jan 2 2009 |
DRDUL The "shared library" feature remains quite buggy in version 1.7. I originally tried using a local network volume to store the shared library, but wanted to have access to it when travelling. So I switched to using my iDisk, but connectivity and latency issues with iDisk proved to be too much for YummySoup! I then switched to using Dropbox, which has worked flawlessly. Or at least the Dropbox part has. YS fails to open the shared library half the time, opening the local library instead, which is always out of date and missing a bunch of recent changes. That wouldn't be so bad if YS didn't automatically save over the shared library when it quits. When that happens, I'm forced to spend 5 or 10 minutes restoring the current version of the shared library and launching and re-launching YS until it manages to open the shared library correctly. Fortunately I have a solid backup system for my data, so I haven't lost anything yet. The "shared library" feature comes with a warning within YS, so it would appear to still be a work in progress. The developer used to maintain forums where I could have tried to get this "shared library" issue addressed, but the forums disappeared a couple of weeks ago. I sent the developer an email over a week ago, but there's been no response. Bottom line: If you want to share your library of recipes between two or more Macs, hold off on YS until this feature works reliably, or look at another recipe app that can do it. (Version 1.7)

Hazel | Dec 24 2008 |
DRDUL I tried Hazel for a couple of days. I didn't encounter any significant memory usage or system slowdowns as others have reported. I did find that Hazel didn't work 100% of the time, occasionally missing files that were added to watched folders. I also found that in some cases, it took Hazel a over a minute to notice a change in a watched folder, and for one task I wanted to automate, that was far too long. In the end, though, I simply didn't have enough need for what Hazel does. I also found that most of the things I wanted to do with Hazel required Applescript, as there aren't many built-in actions and rules other than moving files around and changing some of their attributes. The time I would spend learning and coding Applescript would be far more than the time Hazel would save me automating a few simple tasks, so I uninstalled it. (Version 2.2.4)

DRDUL Thanks for the instructions. Unfortunately, they didn't work for me. Fiwi | Dec 6 2008 |
DRDUL With version 1.7, Fiwi is now a must-have app, especially given the price. I like the dual-pane feature, but for me, the main reason i use Fiwi is that it offers a "reset" feature for Finder windows. I usually end up dragging and resizing Finder windows all over the place. Fiwi cleans up my mess in just one click. (Version 1.7)

JAZZYGUY That is a BAD practice. Most developers DO NOT follow this practice which actually DRIVES AWAY people from supporting them. If you are a SINGLE USER you should be allowed to install a registered copy on any of the Macs you own and use for yourself alone. (Version 1.2)

KavaMovies | Jul 23 2009 |
MACMARIA Thank you for the heads up. I was thinking about trying and eventually buying KavaMovies, but no way with this kind of license. I'll probably go for DVDpedia which has terrific support, reviews and a fair license. Extra note: some devs should look at other apps which have better license systems. On Scrivener, for instance, you can use it in any computer at your home to a maximum of 5. IMO, licenses and support distinguish an app from okay to great (and therefore successful). (Version 1.3.1)

GraphicConverter X | Dec 5 2008 |
DRDUL I'll echo RPAEGE's comment. I own the current version, but rarely use it (like maybe once every six months). The user interface and organization are just too brutal. Doing anything with GraphicConverter is like trying to find a tool in a box into which a few hundred tools have been dumped. Other apps offer an experience more along the lines of picking a tool out of a well-organized tool chest, so I end up using other apps instead of GraphicConverter. (Version 6.3)

Fiwi | Dec 1 2008 |
DRDUL Nice idea, but doesn't appear to be designed for a large monitor or multiple monitors. I use dual 30 inch monitors. Fiwi opens two giant Finder windows that fill my primary monitor (the one with the menubar). But I usually keep my Finder windows on the other monitor, and have them a "normal" size. After using Fiwi, the next time I open a Finder window, it opens giant size on the wrong monitor, so I have to resize it and drag it back where I want it. If the developer could add a pref setting to specify where and what size Fiwi opens Finder windows, I'd be sold. Otherwise, it creates more work for me than it saves. (Version 1.6)

Fiwi | Dec 1 2008 |
MLEONTI DRDUL, thank you for trying Fiwi. Fiwi creates two windows on the main monitor. It creates them big so they they hide the other windows that might be open underneath, avoiding confusion when you move files/folders from a to b. You are right to say the next window is created the same size and location of the previous one as this is how the Finder works. Fiwi is a faceless application and therefore there is no way of calling preferences up. I wrote it like this so it can quit as soon as the job is done without robbing memory (RAM) from the Mac. Thanks to your input I am now working on the idea of having a text file in the Fiwi folder where users can type their preferences. Fiwi would read them at start up and behave accordingly. I appreciate your suggestion for improving Fiwi. (Version 1.6)

Raw Photo Processor | Nov 26 2008 |
DRDUL I own Photoshop CS4 with Camera RAW 5.2, but I use Raw Photo Processor to convert images from RAW format. Not because it's better (it's not as easy to use and doesn't provide real-time previews), but because it doesn't mess with the RAW files from my Panasonic LX3. Adobe Camera RAW and SilkyPix both automatically correct LX3 RAW files for barrel distortion, but at the cost of losing a good part of the image around the edges. To its credit, RPP simply delivers what the sensor received, distortion and all. I'd much rather have the option of correcting the barrel distortion myself in Photoshop, than lose part of my image. Thanks goodness I have RPP as an option! (Version 3.8.2)

DRDUL I upgraded to version 5, which as of version 5.0.3 has proven to be quite buggy. The moment Apple adds tabs to the Finder, I'm ditching Path Finder completely. (Version 5.0.3)

DRDUL I bought PdfClerk Pro for only one purpose — to create and edit bookmarks. PdfClerk Pro enables me to do the following (none of which Acrobat Pro can do): • Automatically generate bookmarks from entries in a table of contents • Automatically hyperlink table of contents entries • Automatically number bookmarks • Create bookmarks with a default zoom level of "inherit zoom" Given the alternative of manually and tediously creating and editing bookmarks in Acrobat Pro, PdfClerk Pro is a bargain! iQuarantine X | Jul 4 2008 |
DRDUL I purchased the first verison of this, because I figured at $5 it was worth it. IIRC, that was when Leopard was at version 10.5.2. Every new version of Leopard requires a new version of iQuarantineX, which makes sense to me. The upgrade to version 10.5.3 of iQuarantineX was free, but with version 10.5.4 the developer wants another $5. At the time I purchased iQuarantineX there was no indication that my $5 would only last a couple of versions of OS X. If I was to pay another $5 for version 10.5.4, there's no mention of when I'd have to fork over another $5 for a future upgrade (but I'm guessing it wouldn't be long). So I'm not going to purchase the new version, and I'll learn to live with Leopard's occasional reminder that I downloaded an app from the Internet. In terms of functionality, iQuarantineX does what it says it will do, and it is dead simple to use. In terms of value, it's not worth it. A good app ruined by a bad pricing strategy. SteerMouse | May 27 2008 |
DRDUL To follow up on my earlier post, I contacted the developer who couldn't provide any more insight. After fiddling with it for a while, it appears that "tracking speed" determines how fast/much the cursor moves across the screen, while "sensitivity" determines how much the cursor moves in relation to the movement of the mouse. I have set my tracking speed to the higher end of the range (1.5), and my sensitivity to the lower end (600). The result is that I can move the cursor from one side of my large monitor to the other without much mouse movement (higher tracking speed), yet I can still use the mouse accurately when doing detail work in Photoshop (lower sensitivity). DRDUL I've started using SteerMouse because the Intellipoint software for my MS mouse is too buggy to tolerate any more. SteerMouse does the job nicely, but one thing is confusing me as I tweak the settings -- the difference between "tracking speed" and "sensitivity." Unfortunately, there's no useful explanation of these within the app or on the developer's web site. I'm trying to find a balance between precision for small movements of the mouse and fast speed for when I need to move the cursor a long distance. If anyone could provide some insight as to how these settings work, it would be appreciated! (Version 3.9)

I tried changing permissions on the com.elgato.* prefs files, and on a few other files I found in the Application Support folder, but with no luck. I contacted Elgato's tech support, and received the following answer: Thank you for contacting Elgato Systems. We are aware of a problem with non-admin accounts and EyeTV 3.0.1. There is a problem with saving a setting to our global preference when quitting out of EyeTV. Hopefully our Engineers will fix the problem soon. FinderPop | Feb 28 2008 |
DRDUL Wow! Just what I've been looking for. FinderPop makes it so much easier to move and copy files, access frequently-used folders, and drop files on selected apps. I knocked it down a star on ease of use because it takes a bit of reading through the help to figure out how to set it up and use it (the author admits it's not terribly easy to use), but it's worth the investment in time. I also knocked it down a star on stability because I initially checked the box that added FinderPop's menu to every app, but found that was slowing things down a bit and causing some apps to crash. Seeing as i really only want FinderPop's menu to appear in the Finder (and on the desktop and menubar), turning off this feature is not a deal-breaker for me. (Version 2.1)

EasyFind | Dec 21 2007 |
DRDUL A follow-up to my earlier post... I heard back from the developer, who explained that the file type drawer is only used for searches of file contents (the fourth option under "Search for"). For the other three types of searches, it has no effect. The way to restrict the other searches to specific file types is to include the file extension in the search. For example, to find a Word a document with "foo" in the name, enter "foo doc" in the search box. To find a PDF with "foo" in the name, enter "foo pdf." The downside of this approach is that you can only search for one file type at a time — it doesn't work to enter "foo doc pdf" in an effort to search for Word files and PDFs. (Version 4.0.1)

EasyFind | Dec 16 2007 |
DRDUL I want to like EasyFind, but one thing is driving me nuts. I can't figure out how to limit the search to specific file types. I pop open the drawer on the left side and uncheck "Scan all files." I then check the box next to the first line, where I've typed several file extensions: "txt, rtf, rtfd, text" for example. The idea is to limit the search to text files. When I click the Find button, however, EasyFind finds files of all types, not just the types I specified. Without the ability to limit the search to specific file types, this promising app isn't that useful to me. There's no built-in help, so maybe I'm missing something obvious. (Version 4.0)

DRDUL HandBrake 0.9.1 crashes at the start of a rip on two different Intel machines (Mac Pro, MacBook Pro). I tried every combination of settings, but every time I pressed "Start" or "Start Queue," it crashed. So I downloaded MacTheRipper 2.6.6, and it ripped the DVD flawlessly. GARY WHITE But MactheRipper is a DVD ripper not Encoder so whats the relevance? I have used Handbrake and Visualhub for a long time with no problems at all! Highly recommended!! (Version 0.9.1)

Cocoa Cookies | Aug 22 2007 |
DRDUL Oh, I like this! One of the few things I've been missing from my Windows days is a good cookie manager. Cocoa Cookies is it! It does everything I want (sorts by domain, displays cookie info and allows me to protect favourite cookies), and nothing that I don't want. Highly recommended! (Version 0.9)

DRDUL Nice, very nice! Launches most apps by typing just two letters. The annoying dock icon can be eliminated with Dock Dodger or a simple edit of Info.plist. This has now become my preferred way to launch apps. (Version 2.1)

DRDUL Damn! The code that's needed for the Info.plist file got mangled in my previous post. In the following text, replace all square brackets [ ] with angled brackets (the ones above the comma and period on the keyboard — you'll see the correct brackets in other lines in the Info.plist file). Because they're used in HTML, they're getting mangled in my post. [string]1[/string] (Version 1.4.11)

DRDUL The dock icon was a show-stopper for me, too. I e-mailed the developer, who pointed me towards this tip, which removes the dock icon very nicely: • Open Info.plist in the application package (i.e. HoudaSpot.app/Contents/Info.plist). • Add the following after first in file: • Move the application temporarilty to another location and open it (this clears the cache of the previous plist information) • Close the application and move it back to the original location If you're reluctant to mess with the innards of the application package, the other option is to use Dock Dodger, which does the same thing. Either way, you'll have to repeat this every time there's an update of HoudahSpot. (Version 1.4.11)

Ad Subtract | Aug 17 2007 |
DRDUL Works for me! I added GoodVibrations.css to Safari, and now pages load FAST! I like that it's not a plug-in or other hack — it's simply a style sheet, so there are no compatibility issues. A few ads still get through, but overall it does a great job. I consider it an essential Safari enhancement. Many thanks to the developer! (Version 8-2007)

DejaMenu | Jul 27 2007 |
DRDUL Great application for anyone with multiple monitors. I've set up the DejaMenu hotkey combination to be Cmd-Opt-Z, as it is easy to press these three keys with my left hand. Better yet, I've set a button on my Microsoft mouse to the same hotkey combination, so now I can use the mouse to pop up the DejaMenu menu. The only things I'd like to see improved/added would be to make the name of the application appear in bold (as on the menu bar), and add the Apple menu to the top of the pop-up menu. Solitaire XL | Jul 18 2007 |
DRDUL My wife loves this app! All she wants is a simple Klondike solitaire app. She doesn't need 100 different games or fancy animations. Solitaire XL fits the bill. It looks great, it can be scaled up to a huge size, and it works flawlessly. The only thing that would be nice to have added to Solitaire XL would be a semi-opaque background, similar to some widgets. As it is, you can choose a solid brushed metal background (gak!), or no background at all. A semi-opaque background would be a nice third choice that would enable you to see apps in the background, but would "mute" their appearance so that it would be easier to see the playing cards (which can sometimes get lost in the background clutter). Amnesty Singles | Jul 18 2007 |
DRDUL What a great app! My initial enthusiasm for Dashboard wore off pretty quickly, and it's been weeks since I last activated Dashboard. My main complaint about Dashboard is it's a different environment form my desktop, and it's not easy to move back and forth between regular apps and Dashboard widgets. There are a few widgets that I really like, however, so when I discovered Amnesty Singles, I had to try it out. I bought it within 10 minutes, after converting three widgets to run as applications. Cut-and-paste between regular apps and widgets converted with Amnesty works without problems, which means I can easily use a couple of my favourite widgets — Case Converter and SnatchIt. Highly recommended! (Version 1.2.1)

Pseudo | Jul 14 2007 |
DRDUL I thought I should add a review here, as the previous one is two years old. Even though Pseudo is apparently a PPC app and nota Universal app, I use it on a brand-new Mac Pro with OS X10.4.10 with no problem at all. It's a handy app that save me from having to log out of my day-to-day account and log in to my admin account just to do some minor task. (Version 1.2.3)

Img2icns | Jul 14 2007 |
DRDUL Works great. I create 256x256 pixel images in Photoshop, save them in PNG format to preserve the transparent background, then drag them onto img2icns to create perfect Mac icons. It doesn't get any simpler than that. (Version 0.4)

VacuumMail | Jul 14 2007 |
DRDUL I just switched to a Mac from Windows, and from Outlook to Apple Mail (via Outlook2Mac). Being the paranoid tinfoil-hat-wearing person that I am, I keep an archive of three years worth of mail. VacuumMail saved my bacon, as Apple Mail was choking on the huge number of message I imported and then started moving around. I use it regularly (it also runs automatically) to keep Mail "fit and trim." Highly recommended! (Version 0.9.6)

DRDUL I just switched to a Mac from Windows, and this is the best password manager I've used on either platform. Highly recommended! (Version 2.4.8)

TNEFs Enough | Jul 14 2007 |
DRDUL This is a must-have app. I just switched to a Mac from Windows, and from Outlook to Apple Mail, and couldn't figure out what to do with the winmail.dat files. With TNEF's Enough in my dock, I just drag the file onto the TNEF's Enough icon, and then choose which files to extract and where I want them to go. Great piece of work! (I can't understand why this functionality isn't built into Apple Mail.) (Version 2.0)

GraphicConverter X | Jul 14 2007 |
DRDUL I just switched to a Mac from Windows, and quickly discovered that iPhoto wouldn't work for me (the library-based organization is not what I want). I use Photoshop and Bridge for heavy-duty work, but wanted something fast and easy, and that my wife could use for her photos. in my Windows days I used ACDSee, and was looking for something similar. I tried a bunch, and GraphicConverter was by far the best. Too bad about the name, though, as it really fails to describe the full range of features the application offers. Highly recommended! Overflow | Jul 14 2007 |
DRDUL I just switched to a Mac from Windows, and I soon understood whay everyone on a Mac uses a launcher — there's just not enough room in the dock for everything, and having to navigate the Applications folder to launch something is annoying. I wanted something simple and elegant, and I found it in Overflow. As a mostly-reformed Windows user, I like its Start button-like mode of operation. I've assigned F1 as the hotkey for Overflow, so all I do is hit F1, click the cartegory I want, and click the app I want. Simple! (Version 2.0.6)

A chill shudder shot through me when i read the bit about the "Start" menu being a GOOD thing! As someone said, that aspect of Overflow could have been replicated by simply putting a folder full of aliases in the dock. Yikes, i'm getting too old for that sort of nasty OS 7/8/windoze-vista flashback!

Path Finder | Jul 14 2007 |
DRDUL I just switched to a Mac from Windows, where I used (and couldn't live without) a dual-pane file manager. I've been tryinga bunch of Finder alternatives in hopes of finding "The One." And I did! Path Finder beats the others hands down, and I've found that I like tabs even more than I liked a dual-pane setup. Highly recommended! (Version 4.7.1)

CuteClips | Jul 14 2007 |
DRDUL I just switched to a Mac from Windows, and I have been trying all sorts of clipboard utilities in hopes of finding "The One." And I did! CuteClips3 is great! It's simple (most clipboard apps have way too many bells and whistles for my liking), it looks great (the "classic" interface is ever so Mac-groovy), and it's fast. The developer is responsive, and the price is reasonable. Gotta like that! (Version 3.0b2)
