DRG 1) Well, I performed the Snow Leopard conversion on my office Mac which has less critical items than my MacBook Pro. Then I discovered the problem, and did printer sharing until I got the new printer. The set up was not useful to me because in order to do print sharing, the host machine has to be one all the time and cannot go to sleep, and that's not possible in my office (the Pro must be put to sleep while I examine patients). 2) Yes, I did clone my MacBoo Pro, but not the office Mac because it doesn't have anything on it that I didn't have on my Pro. However, I sync calendars between the computers and my Touch. Returning to Leopard would possibly have caused some real headaches here will appointments suddenly disappearing so reverting back to Leopard was just not an option 3) The link to HP specifically states that for the HP 6MP its an update for the driver ONLY, and that AppleTalk is NOT supported anymore. The 6MP either uses parallel port technology or AppleTalk. Again. I would need to set up a print server, or use a dongle. All this was discussed at the time I made my decision on MacFixIt. I don't blame Apple entirely. HP has their hands dirty as well. But the printer notification by Apple was so off hand, that I think a lot of people got caught unawares. (Version 10.6.1)

DRG To the person who decided that I should have reverted back to Leopard and that my buying a new printer was dumb: I don't know about you, but I sell my TIME. Do you realize the time it would take to do all this on ALL my machines? That would certainly be more expensive than just going to Quill.com, purchasing a printer and having it sent to my office overnight with free shipping. Maybe you have all day, but I don't. So don't call people dumb unless you know what you are talking about. Re: sharing via USB, the HP 6MP does not have a USB port. I would (as I said) have to track down a Parallel to USB dongle, then attach it to my printer and then set up sharing. Again, this wastes time: ordering the dongle, waiting for it to arrive, etc. My work requires I have a printer ready and working. So, at the time, since it wasn't really known that such a dongle would really work, I did what I knew would work: a new printer. My error was upgrading too fast. But Apple never really made clear (at least to me) that they were dropping AppleTalk. (Version 10.6.1)

DRG I wish I could agree with most of the excellent reviews here, but I can't. The original 10.6 release installation robbed me of my beloved HP 6MP printer. Since all my machines are now updated to 10.6.1, this printer will not work without the purchase of a print server, and even then, people have reported problems hooking this printer up. I could use a parallel to USP dongle but that won't allow sharing the printer over my wired ethernet setup. I would have to get an Airport to do this. So I had to buy a new printer. The 6MP might end up in the land fill. It's disgusting. And the installation caused a corruption of my sound preferences so that the sound level would not default to it's last level. I had to hunt on the internet to find out why. Before I installed, I confirmed that my director was sound, and my permissions were fixed, and rechecked them after installation. With the 10.6.1 update, suddenly my internet connection went down. Happily just restarting everything made it come back but the fact that all this has to be done with these updates for Snow Leopard makes 10.6 the WORST OS X update so far in my experience. What have I gained? Faster start up is all. And it cost me FAR MORE than the retail price of Snow Leopard. (Version 10.6.1)

DRG According to document HT366: "If your printer can only use the AppleTalk protocol, the printer must be connected to, and then shared by, an appropriate AppleTalk-capable printer server." I have a trusty HP LaserJet 6MP printer. It is 12 years old, has printed over 50,000 copies without a single problem, and because of a decision on Apple's part, it's essentially headed to the land fill. Would it have been such a problem to allow us to add the AppleTalk Protocol as an option if we had a printer that needed it? BTW, this info was listed under the Apple printers, NOT the HP printers, so I upgraded without realizing the problem. It appears that the 6MP is supported BUT only via a print sharing situation. By the time you go out, find an appropriate print server and set it up, you might as well buy a new printer. My printer is critical for my business, so I purchased a new printer, but my ecology side is SO ANGRY at Apple for this stupidity, I could just slap Mr Jobs' face! And even if there was a way to get it to run with Snow Leopard, the TIME involved makes it not worth the effort. What ever happened to PLUG AND PLAY??? Even with the new Brother printer I purchased, I had to download the drivers manually. (Version 10.6)

DRG This latest beta is TERRIBLE. I would strongly urge people to stick with v.b6. 1) Clicking on the help option causes an IMMEDIATE crash, and the result is toxic: If you revert back to b6, it continues to crash. 2) Received messages: under "who" it shows who it is TO rather than who it is FROM so all you see under "who" is your name. And I couldn'tfigure out how to fix this. This program is getting to be like Quicken: give a few minor updates, with tons of bugs, when some of the important features have still not been implemented. Yes I appreciate that this is freeware, and is being produced by volunteers, but if you are going to give us this, why not just leave it as it is and say this is the final version. I'm one who is willing to pay an annual fee for this program, but only if we don't get stuff like this. (Version 8.0b7)

OINCE This update on a g4 imac was NOT able to complete and put into the trash to try later. I attempted to restart to retry and got stuck on the grey apple screen. I was able to boot from Tiger install dvd and run disk utility to repair permissions and disk. Still not able to boot from hard drive. Booted again from Tiger install dvd and set startup drive to os9. Was able to boot os9 and noticed the time was off. Figured the eight year old battery may have given up. Replaced the pram battery. Startup from HD still stalls at grey apple screen. Sometimes I can boot from dvd other times it just ejects. Am trying to do a archive and install 10.4. Anyone else stuck like this? Thanks in advance for any help.

Apple Security Update | Sep 19 2009 |
Unless you are running the version of 10.4 that is on your installation DVD, you should not repair disk permissions while booted from the DVD. The default permissions change with the OS updates, so if you run 10.4.11 and repair permissions using 10.4.3 (for example) your permissions will definitely be incorrect. Use the Disk Utility application from your applications folder for repairing permissions, and use Disk Utility booted from the DVD to repair the disk. I have updated three G3s running Tiger with the update and had no problems. It did not take as long as the last security update, and generated less hard drive noise than its predecessor. (Thankfully.) Did you get things to work on your G4? Have you run Applejack? Personally, I never bother with archive-and-install. If I am reinstalling, I: download/burn all the needed Apple updates to CD (I don't trust Software Update); backup; test the backup; boot to Tiger DVD; open Disk Utility; zero out the disk; boot OS 9 CD; reinstall OS 9; update to OS 9.2.2; boot Tiger DVD; install Tiger; apply combo update, security update, Quicktime, java, etc.; install latest versions of apps compatible w/Tiger; drag over any wanted data from my backup. I repair permissions in Tiger after installation, combo update, security update, iTunes update and Safari update. Erase/install is faster than archive/install, but it takes a while. I feel this method saves disk space and lessens the chance that any corrupted data will be carried over with the reinstallation. Just my opinion, and this methods works well for me. YMMV. Now two SUID files: "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" and "usr/bi/lppasswd" apparently have been modified and will not be repaired. For example: I want to view a .pdf file: In Safari and Firefox it opens quickly in a window and I can save to my drive quickly and easily. In Camino, the only way to view it is to download it to the drive: It must take at least 10-15 seconds before the download begins and then another 10-15 seconds after the download for the download window to close, AND during these times, the browser is completely paralyzed. UGH!!! To Camino's developers, if you change anything in the next version, you've GOT to fix this!! (Version 1.6.1)

DRG Well, curiosity get the best of me: I tried importing my Eudora address book and messages. 1) Addresses came over fairly well, but the organization is kooky compared to what I had in the past. I will have to spend time reorganizing. But at last I won't need to retype it all. 2) Message importation was a joke. Less that 10% of the messages archived by year made it over. I don't know of another way to get all my saved emails over to this new version. The new Eudora refuses to open the files directly. So for now, I will need to maintain two versions of Eudora: a legacy version (V6.2.4) and a current version 8.x. It's deja vu again: when my partner and I sold our house a few years ago, I found all my old Apple //e diskette files of information using programs that no longer exist or have a way to be converted. I just had to throw them out. (Version 8.0b1)

Eudora | Sep 4 2007 |
DRG Well, I spent the day (Labor Day) familiarizing myself with this version of Eudora. My thoughts: 1) Recognizing that this is a beta, I can forgive some very obvious bugs (additional personalities may not show up under certain circumstances, resizing the main window is not remembered upon reopening, etc.) 2)Unlike old Eudora, settings are scattered all over the place, making it very difficult to set up things, but once you do, things tend to work nicely. 3) You may need to go back to your ISP and make sure of the proper settings to configure incoming and outgoing email because the setup has more variables than old Eudora. With old Eudora, I could receive but not send emal using Comcast's and ATT Worldnet's service. With new Eudora, it was the opposite until I went back to both services and looked at the exact settings necessary (which weren't a part of old Eudora.) Voila! Receiving/sending are now extraordinarily fast. 4) HTML renders a lot better than before. 5) Dates are not rendered well. So after a few hours of playing with the program, I'm much more comfortable with the program. I haven't tried to import my address book because it is my understanding that the Thunderbird group suggests not to, especially with Macs, so I will probably manually move them over, which is a pain and I would have thought that they'd use Apple's address Book but they kept to Eudora's separate address book. I'm not sure that this was the best idea. Unlike others, I feel that this is a good start, but there is more work to be done. As this work is voluntary, I pray the developers don't abandon their new born child. I know this may sound heretical, but I would pay for this new version of Eudora (as I did the old) if there was some way to assure its continued upkeep. (Version 8.0b1)

DRG Oh, I was sooooo looking forward to this release. But I still can't send mail over Comcast's internet service. A year ago, I had no problem doing this by setting up a different personality in Eudora. But all of a sudden, a few months ago, I could no longer do so. Others has this same problem. I was praying that with this new version I'd be in like Flynn. But no dice, and Comcast doesn't support Eudora (and I believe Thunderbird), so I don't know what to do. If another Comcast user reads this and you can send messages and you are reading this, PLEASE tell me how you did it. I will be eternally grateful. (Version 8.0b1)

DRG How can it be Citibank's fault? Their site works with Camino 1.0.3, Firefox 2.0.0.2 and Safari. Something MUST be different with Camino 1.1 otherwise, there would be no need for it, right? Regarding bugzilla, I do believe I mentioned it to them, but just like page rendering got all screwed up with new versions of Safari, Firefox and Camino on VSPs website several years ago, when you are dealing with password protected sites, there is only so much that the Mozilla people can do. CFLAWSON If you had read the release notes, you would notice that virtually all the changes to Camino since 1.0.x have been in the user interface, not in the rendering engine. You said you filed this in Bugzilla -- what bug number is it? (Version 1.1b1)

Camino | Feb 26 2007 |
DRG Honestly, I don't remember the number. I don't keep track of these things - I'm not in the business of doing so. But again, I did look at the release notes, and there seems to be a lot of changes going on in how Camino is working. Yes, it could be a Citibank problem, but it does seem strange that Firefox uses the same underpinnings and the site renders perfectly with it and not with these new versions of Camino. (Version 1.1b1)

Camino | Feb 26 2007 |
CFLAWSON That's not strange at all. There are literally hundreds of Web sites out there that do improper user-agent sniffing and ignore essentially any browser that is not Firefox or IE. You might wish to complain to Citibank and point them to If you happen to remember the bug number (you should have gotten an e-mail about it), either post it here, or comment in the bug (and I'll probably see your comment). (Version 1.1b1)

Camino | Feb 26 2007 |
DRG I looked at Bugzilla and now I remember that the problem I was having with Camino originally was that Citibank was suggesting that I switch to Firefox. The site would work properly when I ignored what they told me to do. I remember, altering some code to make Camino look like Firefox to Citibank and this eliminated the warning. I will create a new problem for this problem: now the graphics/HTML is not rendering properly at all and you can't get into the site. (Version 1.1b1)

(Version 1.1b1) | |

DB forgot to mention I'm also using a MacBook Pro, so possibly this is an Intel issue...? (Version 1.1b1)

Camino | Feb 27 2007 |
JCRAIG I, too, have a MacBook Pro and a Citibank account. I just paid my bill with no problem. Granted, that's the extent of my needs for the Citibank site, but to call it unusable would be misleading. If you're up to doing some troubleshooting, the first step would be to create a new profile (move the Camino folder in ~/Library/App. Support to your Desktop, then launch Camino) and see if the problem still exists. Make sure ad blocking and Flashblock are not causing your issue. Also, make sure you don't have any 3rd party Camino plugins or input managers that are causing issues (CamiTools, CamiFlash, etc.). Don't just remove old pref panes, be sure to look in the Input Mgrs folders in both /Library and ~/Library. (Version 1.1b1)

Camino | Feb 27 2007 |
DRG I humbly regret to say that creating a new application support file for Camino did not work. Also removing any files in the InputManagers folder did not work either. The opening page still does not render properly and clicking on several items produces unreliable results. This is my (a layman's) definition of unuseable. (Version 1.1b1)

DRG The reality of life is that most accountants use Windows-based programs. By being a Mac-only product, the data file cannot be used directly by accountants. My advice to the the creators: go against the grain: port your program over to Windows (as Apple did with iTunes) so that our accountants can read the files directly. The only finance program creators who seem to understand this is MoneyDance and this is what I am now using. MoneyDance is a bit rough around the edges BUT it is cross platform. Without this cross platform ability why is there a reason to switch from Quicken? Most accountants are familiar with Quicken. (Version 2.1.8)

DRG Have you ever tried to convert your data so that your bookkeeper can use your data on his Windows-based PC? Good-luck! It is almost impossible to do if your file has any degree of complexity. I've tried doing this with my professional society's finances: it was a nightmare! I wound up just printing it out and the bookkeeper charged us more because he had to input the data manually. And this file was truly simple compared to my personal file which contains deposits containing as many as 20 split lines! The reality is that finance professionals do not use Macs. They use Windows-based PCs. And without that cross platform translation ability, Quicken for Mac is a disabled child. (Version R2)

I am running my Optometric Practice using MoneyDance as well as tracking my condo payments etc. I'm not big on securities and the like so I can't say if MoneyDance can do these things, but it doesn't seem like Quicken does these things very well either. DRG Happily you've never had to deliver your file to an accountant. What's with all these accountants? They ALL use Windows-based computers! My guess is you've never had to convert your data to the Windows format. Try it sometime (and weep!) Every year Intuit "updates" Quicken. Every review each year says there is little new in the updated version. So why update? The Mac version is not as comprehensive as the PC version, is not compatible with the PC version, is not a universal application (and may never become one), has the same annoyances update after update, and is generally full of new bugs each year that are not resolved until the end of the year when it's time to update to a "new" version which starts the same problem again. You know the expression: There's a sucker born every minute! (Version R2)

The problem is the files put in the Startup Folder in the Microsoft Office Folder. I reinstalled V5.00 but realized that I had to go into Microsoft Office and remove these three critical files so that Office would work correctly. This is a travesty!! This update couldn't have been even checked before it was released. If it supposedly was, the people handling this update are completely incompetant and should be immediately FIRED! And Adobe now owes me $$$ for the time I wasted in removing this piece of crap. I run OS 9.2.2 (Version 5.0.5)

Quicken 2007 | Dec 13 2001 |
DRG Unless, you're having problems with Quicken 2002, DON'T APPLY THIS UPGRADE!!! I did and it COMPLETELY DESTROYED my finances file, a file that I'd been updating for at least five years!! Every note in every slit that was entered was COMPLETELY wiped away. Thank God I have the program save a complete copy after every close! I had to go back to a copy made several days ago to find one that Quicken 2002 would now open properly. Each copy would be corrupted after opening! A DISASTER. AGAIN, DON't APPLY THIS REVISION!
