DOUG ENGELBART  Hi; is there a tool to change the point of time at which Leopard automatically runs its maintenance cron scripts? Sometimes I'm still working at 03:15 am, so it would be better if the crons run at 06:00 am, for example.

USB Overdrive X
Oct 29 2009

DOUG ENGELBART  In my old "Overdrive X 10.4.5" everything worked fine. Now I switched to this new v3.0.1 and re-configured my old settings (more than 30) with success, but I also got the following issues (OSX.5.8, G4):

1.) I cannot choose these two games anymore to configure mouse key settings: "Diablo II (Carbon)" and "Baldur's Gate II". I can select each applications’ file in the "Choose" dialog, but when I click "Open" there to choose the application, then the application is not chosen (the popup field still says "Application: Choose Application...") and "Cancel/OK" hangs so that I must force-quit the dialog.

2.) This new Overdrive now can export settings (as documented). But it can only export each single setting for each single application separately. How do I save my whole bunch of more than 30 application settings in one single export file?

DOUG ENGELBART  The first time I used this was years ago (when it came out), and now it runs on my G4 1.25 GHz with OSX.5.8 perfectly ... It's so wonderfully compact and at the same time full of helpful innovations. Just one thing:

Why must it completely hide the inspector window automatically by force whenever I switch to another app? I want it to stay!

Just one thing: The colors of the painted gesture paths should be selectable, too, because many people don't like the blue or red pill. ;)

DOUG ENGELBART  This Freeware is one of the absolute greatest ever. Cheers to the dev! One question: Under "Action: Type:" I want to type a shortcut like Command+Delete or Option+Home etc. But if I type the DELETE key into the field for "Type:", then it remains empty and that key is not executed. So how do I define keys like Delete, Home, PgUp, PgDwn etc.?

DOUG ENGELBART  iStat Menu is what Apple should have implemented a dozen years ago. Now I finally can diplay date/time in the alphanumerical form "YYYY-MMDD-HHmm". This was impossible in Apple's "date & time" which can only show the time in the MenuBar, but not the date (try it)! Shame, Apple! :—) iStat's network bandwidth display is essential and beautiful, too, you can even change the bandwidth layout by dragging the ^/v-symbol etc.pp. And iStat's disk eject menu is also better than Apple's...

DOUG ENGELBART  Thank you, thank you, thank you, CROPP! ^^ I did it as you told me. Now my mousedriver 'USB Overdrive X' works fine with FF3.5 just like with every other app. As it should be.

Additional tips:

(1) Close Firefox before doing this.

(2) Be sure to erase the '-n ' in front of the capitals AND the CarriageReturn after them (as it is in Firefox 3.0.11 and before). Then save and close the PkgInfo file.

(3) Duplicate the so modified Firefox application, then trash&delete the original. Rename the duplication from 'Firefox copy' to 'Firefox' or 'Firefox 3.5' etc. and use only it.

P.S.: I reported the bug to bugzilla. Hope they'll avoid such an awkward bungling in the future.

DOUG ENGELBART  Big, big bug in FF3.5: The type/creator is not 'APPL'/'MOZB' anymore as it was in FF3.0.11. Instead, it is erroneously:

'-n A'/'PPLM'

Because of this wrong type/creator name, a mousedriver like “USB Overdrive X” (from MacUpdate.com etc.) does not recognize FF3.5 as an application to define mousekey settings for. Evil! In FF3.0.11 or Camino etc. it’s no problem at all to do that.

How can I correct the type/creator ID of FF3.5 manually? I tried several freeware apps to change it, but without success.

Open PKginfo in TextEdit and change "-n APPLMOZB" to "APPLMOZB".

It works, I did it.

Do it at your own risk though, because I have absolutly no clue on what it could interfere with...

DOUG ENGELBART  USB Overdrive is still the best mouse driver ever. I'm using it since 2003 to create user-efficient mousekey settings for all my workflow applications, helper apps and games. There has never been any problem with it.

Today I wanted to define a new Overdrive mousekey setting for Firefox 3.5b4 and 3.5rc1, but after clicking "New" both app files are not selectable (grey) in the file dialog list. How can this be? Any suggestions? (With FF3.0.11 and all other apps there's no problem at all.)

VERYCARLA  It's been forgetting the window settings for several revisions now. Mine got stuck with the playlist box expanded. I COMPLETELY purged my system of anything VLC-related and then downloaded a fresh copy of VLC, yet it somehow has the exact same messed up window settings. I don't get it. It worked fine all these years and now suddenly it's impossible to remember window locations?

I'm just glad Perian gives me the ability to playback 99% of the videos I download, because VLC is just too annoying for words lately. It's a last resort for those few times Quicktime+Perian don't work.

BAMSE1  I too noticed that VLC no longer saved window size and position. My solution to that issue has so far been to launch version 0.8.4, which does save such preferences, and then continue using the more recent version, i.e. without trashing the preference file. So far it respects the window preferences set by the earlier VLC and has given me no trouble regarding other settings.
