NORAA Normally when a HD is defragmented by iDefrag it needs to be unmounted. Thus you can't defrag your startup volume. "Quick (on-line)" means that the HD can be defragmented while still mounted, including your startup volume. This method only defrags individual files however, and doesn't defrag free space (a full disk optimization). (Version 1.6.9)

Perian's Type Installer | Mar 4 2009 |
ANONYMOUS Not it doesn't add any functionality to Quicktime Player. This little app adds only icons for the filetypes for wich is necessary perian to play with QT (this is done patching Info.plist of QuickTime Player.app). Since Perian adds only support for decoding formats, I've decided to give these files a nice icon, instead of the default blank one. If you don't use QuickTime Player and/or Perian to watch your movies, you don't need this app. (Version 2.4.3_TigerFixed)

Perian's Type Installer | Mar 5 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM It's not really clear what you're asking. Like the developer said, Perian's Type Installer doesn't add any functionality to QT. But, if you're using QT (including Pro), Perian _does_ add functionality. QT Pro has many more options for converting, exporting, etc. than the regular version, but it still suffers from the same codec limitations. Perian solves this for you by adding a large variety of codecs to QT's library, making it a VLC-like media player that will handle just about any file format or codec you throw at it. Perian's type installer simply allows your computer to recognize file types that QT doesn't support by default as QT files. For example, if you have an MKV file and it's set to open with QT (which will play it with Perian installed), it will still be described as a UNIX Executable file in the Finder because it's not a supported format by default. Perian's Type Installer causes files like this to be properly recognized and labelled as QT files. (Version 2.4.3_TigerFixed)

DiskWarrior | Oct 27 2008 |
LEOOFBORG Leopard [with Time Machine] basically makes Diskwarrior obsolete. And I'll tell you why, as a DW user since OS9 days. It's two words: If you've been using Time Machine for a few weeks, and your disk becomes unusable, then you boot with your Leopard CD, and run the Time Machine application: * It asks you for the Time Machine disk you've been using, * It erases your boot disk, * It restores EVERYTHING as it was. The way DW used to 'save my bacon' in OS9, Applejack and Time Machine have been just as useful in OS X. As other users have said, Alsoft has not changed with the times and now, like Allume/Alladin and Stuffit, they've been left behind. When was the last time I made a *.sit file? About the last time I booted the DW CD.... Basically after last year's MacWorld I discarded Disk Warrior as a serious tool due to their spotty support. I mean, it took them *this long* after the release to come up with a CD upgrader? That now doesn't work with Macs from *one year ago*? Please. I *do* use it to check removeable disks, but as a primary disk tool? Nah. That's what diskutil is for. And recovering files? That's what Time Machine / Super Duper / Carbon Copy Cloner are for. I will be VERY SURPRISED if there is a DW 5. (Version 4.1.1)

CHAS_M Not only does the program use Core Animation, which doesn't exist in Tiger, but it is entirely reasonable and rational for a developer to assume that TWO YEARS AFTER RELEASE most customers have migrated to the current OS. Next there will be some crank on here who's mad that there's no OS 9 version. I perfectly understand that some people are reluctant to upgrade the OS until after the bugs are spotted and quashed and all the programs have been updated to accommodate the changes. That is normal, and rational, behaviour. But two years later, now you're just being cheap (or you have a machine that can't go beyond Tiger). Stop whining about developers that are working in the present just because YOU are stuck in the past. Live with what you've got or get with the program. If you don't like rapid, ongoing change, you probably shouldn't be using a computer at all. (Version 1.1.1)

JPPAGLIARO The primary purpose would be to have a "copy" of a folder on another volume, which is either remote or removable. The idea is that this "copy" has virtually no memory footprint, yet retains much of the file information of the original, in particular its structure and Finder file information, including Spotlight comments, file types, names, modification dates, etc. However, use it for whetever purpose you like :-) (Version 1.1.8)

NEIL_M DOM - "Like, if this is some sort of proxy that hides your real IP address on the Internet (for example) I wish it would just say so! " Sounds like you are looking an "Anonymizing proxy server" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymizer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server A proxy server that removes identifying information from the client's requests for the purpose of anonymity is called an anonymizing proxy server or anonymizer. Proxies can also be installed by online criminals, in order to eavesdrop upon the dataflow between the client machine and the web. All accessed pages, as well as all forms submitted, can be captured and analyzed by the proxy operator. For this reason, passwords to online services (such as webmail and banking) should be changed if an unauthorized proxy is detected. Intercepting proxy server An intercepting proxy (often incorrectly called "transparent proxy") combines a proxy server with a Gateway. Connections made by client browsers through the gateway are redirected through the proxy without client-side configuration (or often knowledge). Intercepting proxies are commonly used in businesses to prevent avoidance of acceptable use policy, and to ease administrative burden, since no client browser configuration is required. It is often possible to detect the use of an intercepting proxy server by comparing the external IP address to the address seen by an external web server, or by examining the HTTP headers on the server side. I do not know, nor is it made clear at the developer's site (I just checked), but Growl may be a dependency for this app. Or, it may be that Flash Video Downloader only requires Growl for certain features in Flash Video Downloader. It is not made perfectly clear by the developer anywhere that I can readily find. Having said all that, if you do not have Growl installed and want to use it with this particular app, you can download Growl here, it is free. (Version 1.0)

TESSERACT SOFTWARE Growl is not required to run the program. If Growl is not running, then the options in the Settings Tab that relate to Growl will be greyed out, if Growl is running then they will be active and can be checked. Growl is optional. I have tried running the program while Growl was not running, and it worked exactly how I described above. You mentioned that you are using OS X 3.9, its possible that the code that I used to check if Growl is running does not work properly on 3.9. I have re-written that code in a more compatible way. For me the big thing is Skype to Skype, since it is free and long distance calls which is cheeper with Skype then with my subscription. DOM21 I'm confused. This will only work with dual CPU's? Regardless of the power of your single CPU? (Version 1.1.1)

SQUISHED SQUIRREL To the person asking how to play back Indeo 3,4,5... I believe VLC will play back Indeo 3, but the surefire way to play them all back is to use Quicktime 6 under Classic. If you have the Indeo 3, 4 and 5 codecs installed in your OS9 system folder, you can play those files, and convert them to something that Quicktime 7 in OSX will play. (Version 2.1)

DOM21 Worthless to me. Asked it to remove the extension .ts from the end of a folder full of .ts files. It couldn't. Asked it to remove "p.0" from the middle of the same files and replace it with "p." It couldn't. I'm glad so many others are having such roaring success though. I'll look elsewhere.

Thanks for your feedback. Most likely your search settings weren't correct, for example it may have been set to search contents when you wanted to search filenames. If you email me (see the link on the MassReplaceIt website) I can help you find the problem. (Version 2.9)

Metronome | May 19 2006 |
DOM21 The problem with metronomes on computers is if you are doing other tasks and CPU usage hits 100% the beats will hiccup or stall. So while a nice idea not completely reliable on a computer. (Version 1.2)

DOM21 Two steps to save $50.00: 1) In your newsreader type 'nzb' in the address window while in any opened newsgroup. 2) When the resulting nzb's in the newsgroup are revealed download the ones you want. (Fifty dollars??!!) (Version 1.2)

DOM21 If only VLC could slide movies forward and back smoothly like QT does! It still remains impossible to freeze on a particuar frame with VLC. Other than that, it is quite good. (Version 0.8.5)

HOLYPOLY Here's a graphical interface to GnuPG: http://www.tomsci.com/gpgtools/ and you'll probably also want one of these scripts, to make GnuPG work with your favourite mail client (scroll down the page): http://macgpg.sourceforge.net/ (Version 1.4.5)

GnuPG | Sep 7 2006 |
ROBERT This package (GnuPG) is the main program, and--strictly speaking--all you need to use GnuPG encryption. However, unless you work entirely in the command-line environment or are very fond of copy-and-paste, you'll like some additional software that will plug GnuPG into your GUI apps. (PGP would release all this sort of stuff themselves as an integrated package, whereas with GnuPG you pick and choose the pieces you need.) You'll likely want the GUI apps that the MacGPG project supplies. Then you'll likely want a plug-in for your mail application: e.g. If you use Mail.app, you'll also want GPGMail. If you use Thunderbird or SeaMonkey, you'll want Enigmail. There's likely a plug-in for your app. More info: http://fiatlux.zeitform.info/en/instructions/pgp_macosx.html [The software that is only of concern to developers is GPGME.] (Version 1.4.5)

MICHAEL YOUNG "Is there a drum program (this or another) where you can tap out rhythms with your fingers and it converts what you tap into a drum solo? JLENNON314 If you get a keyboard to plug into your computer, you can use Garageband to tap out drum solos. It's not free, but the keyboard can be used for more than just drums. (Version 1.51)
