DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  I understand it's for "domain management" rather than full blown SEO functions, however the problems are really quite silly. For example, a number of domains I have listed in RAGE Domainer 1.9 have Creation and Expiration Dates of the year 1930!! I also have others with Creation Dates of 2014, 2017, 2020, 2021, 2025, and 2027. I'd say that counts for being buggy.

Something is wrong with Version 1.17 of this app. I've been running a demo for the past few days and my iMac is crawling at times. In reviewing Activity Monitor, the app is using up over 900MB of RAM and 1.57GB of Virtual Memory. Yikes!!

Needless to say, in the trash with ya!

Automaton
Nov 11 2009

COUNTACH  Hi, this is the developer.

You've got to be really cautious in interpreting memory usage stats.

If you've got Growl installed, which most people do, try this experiment: goto System Preferences, Growl configuration, and check "Show Growl icon in menu bar". Now look for "Growl Menu" in Activity Monitor. For me on Leopard Growl 1.2 (64 bit) shows 8 Gigabytes VSIZE for this dinky little app, which all it can do is display that menu. On Snow Leopard, it shows 300MB which is twice as big as Automaton. Turn and on and off. Starts up pretty quick huh? Do you think its allocating 8GB of memory in less than one second?

Private Memory (RPRVT on Leopard) is the only number that even nearly means something, and even then has to be qualified by other considerations.

Why is Automaton different to other apps? Well partly because it is 64bit, which Leopard seems to be exceedingly confused about. It may be partly due to the architecture which uses a lot of small plugins, which probably also confuses the reporting in Activity Monitor. If you've got WriteRoom, Automaton uses the plugin library that developer wrote. WriteRoom on my Leopard machine (32 bit) has VSIZE of 365MB, before I even type anything, all for a fairly basic text editor. Clearly WriteRoom doesn't really use 365MB to show an empty text editor.

For example, right now I'm running Automaton 64 bit on Snow Leopard, and it says 183MB Virtual Memory (VSIZE). But the private memory is only 14MB. Shared Memory is 32.5MB. That means that Automaton is linked against Apple libraries that might be 183MB, little of which has, or ever will get into memory! All it means is these program pages *could* get into memory if the program ever asked for them. But a typical program only asks for certain features out of a large library. The 32.5MB says that at least that much has got into memory, but it might not have been Automaton that did it! If Automaton is linked against Cocoa libraries, and say Finder is linked against the same library, it might have been Finder that caused that memory to get loaded!

The private memory truly belongs to Automaton, but even then it might not all be resident. Most programs will have only a small portion of their actual memory resident at once. How much memory the program demands as resident depends on how much it is "touching" at the time. Programs that have no windows open at the time typically aren't touching much. Programs that are inactive, or whose activity doesn't need much data aren't touching much. Its only active memory that really matters. For example, let's say you load an enormous document into AutoNotes, and then close it. Programs don't relinquish memory as far as Activity Monitor is concerned, but it gets paged out to disk, so your real memory isn't used. Yes, there is a "Real Mem" column in Activity Monitor, but it includes shared libraries, so its not that helpful. Right now I'm using 76MB of real memory, of which 70MB is shared, so at a rough guess Automaton is probably occupying 6MB or less of memory that you could save if you shut it down. Other times, if you have been doing things, especially in the GUI this number might be bigger, but you wouldn't actually save it by shutting down, because it was all paged out anyway.

In fact, a large VIrtual Memory (VSIZE) in activity monitor, could actually indicate an efficient program. It means the program is using a lot of Apple libraries, (which are shared among different programs in memory), and not reinventing the wheel with code that can't be shared.

At the end of the day, how much real memory is used is mostly to do with how much memory the program "touches" during normal background usage. And this should be very small indeed for Automaton. How much virtual memory is directly attributed to a program is the Private Memory (RPRVT) field. Normal users should ignore most of this stuff because it is too hard to interpret.

**...

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  This software is really not worth the money. After spending hard earned money on it and working with it for a couple of months now, I find it to be very inconsistent. When updating my domains to see the increase/decreases of ranking there are inaccuracies. Some things just DO NOT update properly. For example, the Top Ten Delicious Tags. If I delete my domain entry, and then re-enter it, I get different tags. Now WTF is up with that??? Plus, you only have listings for the Top Ten Incoming Links. Curious about #11 and beyond? Well, you're out of luck, because this software only has 10 listed. Not much good now, is it? And finally, there does not appear to be any development on this app. at all. If a new updated and significantly upgraded version comes out, then take a look at it. If not, then don't waste your money on this one.

JESHYR  The whole user interface is weird, not just the first page and program icon. It's not "OS Xish" at all, and behaves in ways that are very unintuitive to me as a Mac user. For example, the "Preferences" is hidden in the File menu instead of the Program menu where it usually goes. Most commands have no menu options or keyboard shortcuts at all, which makes usage difficult for users who prefer or need to use the keyboard for things.

There's also no obvious way to get your carefully entered data out of the program which bothers me a lot, as a potential customer. The documentation says printing and saving to a thumb drive are planned features, but there's no indication whether exporting data in an open format (XML, for example) will be added, or WHEN any of this may be added.

The program is also set up only for American users using non-metric measurements, which doesn't seem to be in the documentation anywhere.

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  It's a fact - having a SiteMap on your website increases your position in the organic search engines - sometimes dramatically so. This plugin for Rapidweaver creates a SiteMap for you so you don't have to. The cost of this plugin is completely insignificant considering what it effectively does. I'm still learning some of the ins and outs, but believe this is a must. When you update your website (add or delete pages), this plugin updates your SiteMap automatically! Install, setup, and forget about it! Here is my example of my "effortless" SiteMap: http://doubleplusdeals.com/sitemap/sitemap.html

Special note, if you go to the developer's site (http://www.loghound.com/), they have many more MUST-HAVE plugins and the more you buy the lower the pricing! Just gotta love that!

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  Hi there Charles,

Thank you for writing your thoughts so openly. I'm not affiliated or partisan to Rapid Ideas but merely wrote to convey my enthusiasm for their quality products. In my surfing of themes for Rapidweaver, I have found some to be substandard and quite difficult to consider paying money for. Upon visiting Rapid Idea's site and viewing the catalog of themes, I (and I'm sure many others) have found them to be instantly visually appealing. Some time previously, I made a bundle purchase (right here on MacUpdate) of their themes, and can express no regret at all, but rather full satisfaction. The bottom line? I'm a strong believer in being honest and open in a review - I like to say great things about truly great products. Wouldn't you agree - we all win if happy users and great developers link up?

CHARLES MILLER  I'll take you at your word, Dennis.

Perhaps you have a marketing background, or natural inclination - cuz you punched every button I could imagine - including upselling toward the end from 1 to 3 themes, while "promising" the themes would produce websites that SELL. That's pretty strong talk for a user, even a happy user. If you're an enthusiastic kind of guy, I trust my few words won't slow you down. :)

I do like and rely quite a bit on user comments. Here and at versiontracker.com (are they related?). At Amazon and buy.com. A lot of good info mixed in with some that's questionable. But I think one develops a feel for that. Sorry if the feel was wrong in your case.

There is a fine balance of list/To Do software being an asset or a liability. It has to be easy and powerful enough to use without being cumbersome and overwhelming to the user. In other words, it has to WORK FOR YOU rather you WORK FOR IT. Get it? Well, these guys do seem to understand this very well because they have created a piece of software which is resting comfortably in the sweet spot of it's category. DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  NoteBook 3 is a class act. This definitely wins the BEST-OF in it's category!!! The Multidex is completely amazing for finding all of the many items you have easily and safely logged into NoteBook 3. The ability to record and store voice snippets is very convenient for fast unhindered note-taking. The familiar look and feel of real life notepads and graphing paper, sticky notes, sticky flags, and reminder flags creates a very fine electronic version of the real world. The PDF manual is chock full of easy-to-follow screen shots, which helps greatly in learning the various powerful functions of NoteBook 3. And finally, the online video tutorials goes a long way in teaching those that need to be shown how things work.

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  To the Developer:

There is a very odd visual response to the app window when I drag it down to become taller. Please look into.

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  This is easily one of my favorite programs on the Mac! The speed and ease with which you build webpages is amazing! Plus, you can work “under the hood” to ease into high level coding! I’ll warn you though, once you start working with it, and you start building it up with some of the many 3rd party plugins and themes, you’ll be completely addicted! It’s a lot of fun to work with. One final note, if you want to learn quickly, then go to Rapidweaver Classroom for online tutorials and don’t forget to get all of the YourHead Software’s fantastic plugins too!

Painter
Feb 25 2009

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  As a paid owner of Painter X and many previous versions, the $199 for this upgrade is far to expensive - and therefore I will not be purchasing. In reviewing the list of new updates / revisions, this is only a $99 value, at best. Make no mistake, Painter is a completely astounding graphics application. Nothing comes close to it!

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  This is an amazing plugin for RapidWeaver! A real “must have.” It allows you to move your content items around by dragging and dropping... and even a little push here, and slide there. Try the demo, I bet within a day you’ll buy it!

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  New upgrade to 1.24 includes a pitch for other products. This little app works well to reduce the clutter on the desktop (when desired). Very easy to switch on/off.

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  This is smart. This should be built into Apple OS for sure. So far, no problems with it's operation and will keep using it until so. It's the fastest way to move a window aside but still keep it viewable, neat, and tidy. Try it - you'll like it.

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  If you need some quick royalty free tune-age for your videos or other, then get this program. Quite easy to use and when exported as MIDI and imported into Garageband it sounds great! Support for the developer was prompt in regards to a question I sent their way. So, go ahead and download the trial, give it a go. Nothing to lose. If you like it then go ahead some bucks and get creating some quick and easy tunes. ~ Denny Crane

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  We live in busy crazy times with lots of passwords to get access to so many things. I'm old and I hate memorizing passwords now. I bought this program a few months ago and have never looked back. It's made life a lot easier when it comes to memorizing passwords... not!! Not to mention the time it takes to type and log into websites which I frequent. If you've never heard of this app, or have never tried it, just download it and give it a go. I guarantee it'll work it's way into your life and your interaction on the web - I use it often during my busy days. So, hands down, get this program, simplify your life, and move onto other more important and enjoyable things! Download it - now!

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  I tried the demo, and reviewed the video on how to use this software. In doing so, combined with the current discount on prior to attained version 1.0 status, I decided to purchase. The software is original in how it visually presents itself. I do believe there is a little more which needs to be done to increase the functionality of the program though. The main component required is sub-goals to the main goals which allows for better follow-through in attaining goals. I did encounter one early bug in the software as well, which was upon adding a new goal, it added itself to the same region and ultimately crashed the software. I do hope this does not occur after some time is put into constructing some goals. One function which would be really nice is to include syncing with computers (home and office). Goals need to be in front of us as much as possible in order to stay foreground in our minds. All in all, this is a fresh approach and I sense some great features may be in the works.

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  DO NOT PURCHASE THIS GAME (unless you have strong will against addictive games). This game is very similar to Diablo I & II in terms of most aspects such as character development and game play. I purchased the game after and have spent numerous enjoyable hours (sans sleep) exploring and building up my character. One very fine aspect of the game is having a pet dog which returns your booty back to the town level and returns with the cash. This keeps you in the dungeons/caves doing what you should be doing - duking it out and building your character. Overall, the game is solid and plays with a high level of enjoyment. So go ahead. Buy it. Lose yourself for a few days or weeks. Buy it now. - Denny Crane

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  I have owned this game for some time now. It's like the game of chess - simple in game play, high in strategy, and loads of fun. Well okay, not quite like chess since chess is nowhere near as much fun. Go ahead, get this game, lose yourself in fun for hours. I do. ... Denny Crane
