DEMOLITION @ ST00P!D M0NK3Y The people who modded down your comment may be reacting to its insulting tone, rather than its content. Next time, word it in a less inflammatory manner and you will likely get a more positive reaction. (Version 3.5.5)

multiXFinder | Sep 16 2009 |
DEMOLITION I've been using the 10.6-compatible release of multiXFinder (v0.4) for about two weeks and it has been working great. It replicates ASM's look/feel so closely that one would be hard-pressed to tell them apart. As a result, I've dumped ASM in the trashbin and saved myself a few bucks (for ASM's upgrade fee) in the process. My only gripe relates to the lack of a separator between the app icon/name and the menubar items. This was also mentioned in an earlier comment by John Sawyer. I find that the app name blends in with the clock digits, sometimes making it hard to distinguish between them at a quick glance. So, offering the option of a separator would be a nice addition. However, this is a minor issue which doesn't really affect multiXFinder's functionality. I'll probably get used to it, eventually. (Version 0.4)

Apple iMac Graphics Firmware Update | Sep 10 2009 |
DEMOLITION I tried to apply Firmware Update 1.0.2 to a 20" iMac 2.0 GHz (Mid-2007) with a Radeon HD 2400XT, but a drop-down sheet informed me that it doesn't need this update. Makes me think that this new firmware might be rolled into the Snow Leopard 10.6.1 update which was released today. I had updated to 10.6.1 just before trying to install this new firmware. Application Switcher Menu | Sep 2 2009 |
DEMOLITION For those of you are balking at paying the new upgrade fee for ASM and are looking for alternatives... X-Assist still seems to work with Snow Leopard. It's a little bit primitive compared to ASM, but the basic functions (i.e. application switcher menu and classic window mode) are there. Meanwhile, Jack Overfull says that he's working on a new version of multiXFinder (v0.4). At the top of the list is Snow Leopard compatibility. It should be available sometime this month. That's good news for people who like the way that ASM operates, since it's basically the same app. Personally, I'm debating whether to pay the upgrade fee. I've been an ASM user for several years and had assumed that the upgrades would continue to be free. But, nothing lasts forever, I guess. I'll probably try X-Assist for a while, then multiXFinder when a 10.6-compatible version arrives. If they don't work out, then I can always ante up the dough for ASM again. (Version 2.3)

Adobe Reader | Jul 31 2009 |
DEMOLITION I forgot to mention... For those who want a tangible item to store in their software archives, then you can download the actual updater app at: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Macintosh You'll find a list of updaters for everything from 6.0.2 up to today's 9.1.3 update, with PPC and Intel versions noted. DEMOLITION That happened to me the last time that I tried to update Reader. This time, I updated it through the built-in updater (Help > Check For Updates...). The download is 24.1 MB. On restarting the app, the "About Reader" box shows "Version 9.1.3". (Version 9.1.3)

VLC Media Player | Jul 30 2009 |
DEMOLITION Just wanted to mention to all the folks still using OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) that VLC 0.9.10 was released recently. It fixes several annoying bugs and crashes that plagued 0.9.9a. It can be found at: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html Scroll about halfway down the page to find Universal, PPC, and Intel binaries. (Version 1.0.1)

MyPopBarrier | Jul 7 2009 |
DEMOLITION I forgot to add... Yes, Mail can go on the server and delete messages in a manner similar to MyPopBarrier. However, Mail doesn't have anything close to the filtering capabilities of MyPopBarrier. For example, if you're the victim of a mailbombing (e.g. thousands of bouncebacks, a really persistent or malicious spammer, etc.), then this is when an app like MyPopBarrier really shines. Once your rules are set up, it automatically nukes every trace of the offending e-mails. (Version 2.6.1)

MyPopBarrier | Jul 7 2009 |
This app's main purpose is to delete e-mails directly on the server without having to download them to your computer first. This is useful, for example, if you want to nuke a bunch of spam without downloading it and letting your mail client's filters deal with it, or getting rid of huge unwanted attachments that are clogging up the inbox on your mail server. This kind of app was more useful back when everybody's connection speeds were slower (e.g. 56K modems), bandwidth was limited, and download limits were much smaller (measured in MB rather than GB). However, it still has its uses. For example, I often work in remote worksites that only have slow dial-up or cell connections. If someone sent me a 20 MB video via e-mail, not only would it tie up the line all day, but I wouldn't be able to get my other e-mail until it was finished downloading. Using an app like MyPopBarrier, I can delete the big attachment on the server and save time, download capacity, and connection charges. Note: I have no association with the author of this app. In fact, I don't even use MyPopBarrier! (I use a competitor's product :-) ). Just wanted to clear up any confusion about apps of this nature. DVDRemaster Pro | Jan 7 2009 |
If you check DVDRemaster's help documentation, "Developers" is misspelled as "Developpers". That's what Revco was pointing out. As far as I can tell, the misspelling has been there since this app's first iteration. However, I suppose we can excuse it because English does not appear to be the first language of the folks at Metakine (I think they're from France?). (Version 4.5.1)

5.0 was released today and the "free upgrade" message is still present on the website. So, it looks like we're okay 'til the next major release. (Version 5.0)

Mac OS X Daylight Saving Time Software Fix | Mar 6 2007 |
DEMOLITION I installed UNH's DST fix on one of our older G4 towers still running 10.2.8. It was a very easy process. Checking the localtime info via Terminal (as described on UNH's DST tech info page) shows that the new DST settings are in place. Overall, this was a worthwhile undertaking. (Version 1.0)
