DAVE BURBANK  Doesn't seem to work on a 1st Gen jailbroken iPod Touch with 3.1.1 software. When I click on "Read Apps" it churns for a bit and then presents a blank screen. Have tried on 3 different Macs. I hope this is a simple fix.

PDFClerk Pro
Jul 28 2008
*****

DAVE BURBANK  This is not going to be a comprehensive review. But I feel the need to comment on this application. I have been using PDFClerk Pro (and the non-pro version) for a couple years. It's a great way to assemble a PDF file from lots of different files. I upgraded to the pro version a while back partly to show my support for the company but also because I wanted the ability to add my own annotations (text boxes, highlights, shapes, etc) to existing PDF documents. I also looked at a product called PDF Pen, but comments about support problems scared me away.

PDFClerk Pro has done everything I have asked of it. It just works! I believe I have only begun to scratch the surface of this program's potential. There are many features I haven't yet explored. For the user who wants to assemble PDF's from files of varying types and the user who wants to annotate existing PDF's this is a great program (and less expensive than the $449 Acrobat Pro!).

THE BEST PART: The thing I like best about PDFClerk and PDFClerk Pro is the exceptional customer support. There are so many bad customer support experiences every day in this world. SintraWorks' António Nunes provides extraordinary support. Use the SintraWorks suport forums. You will receive a quick answer to your question. The answer will be complete, well thought out, and easy to understand.

Nice job!!

IN SUMMARY: The program is stable and works well. The support is excellent.

TrueCrypt

DAVE BURBANK  The last sentence should have read: The TrueCrypt manual is extremely thorough, but needs to be completely updated for Mac and Linux.

TrueCrypt
Feb 10 2008
*****

DAVE BURBANK  TrueCrypt has been around for a while on the Windows platform. I first learned about it when the great "Security Now" podcast devoted an entire episode to it. TrueCrypt is now available for OS X and there's a new GUI version for Linux. This is great! I use Truecrypt to encrypt the data on my many USB Flash Drives. I can now use these encrypted flash drives on all three platforms. TrueCrypt can encrypt entire volumes, partitions, or you can create an encrypted file (kind of like a disk image) onto which you can store your most important data.

There is so much that TrueCrypt does. I have only scratched the surface. Listen to the Security Now podcast on TrueCrypt. The TrueCrypt is extremely thorough, but needs to be completely updated for Mac and Linux.

SuperDuper!
Feb 5 2008
*****

DAVE BURBANK  SuperDuper continues to be the very best, most reliable way to backup a Mac OS X System. While a fully Leopard compatible version took some time, the folks at Shirt Pocket worked hard to be absolutely sure they got it right and dealt with all the nuances of 10.5. Thanks for keeping your users apprised on your blog.

Time Machine has its place but on my system it will never replace SuperDuper.

The 2.5 version appears rock-solid.

A Better Finder Rename
Dec 21 2006
*****

DAVE BURBANK  There are other products which rename files and cost less. I decided to try A Better Finder Rename. Its feature set is Incredibly rich. It is solid, stable, and well designed. Before paying, I "tested" the quality of support publicspace software has to offer and I am VERY pleased. They answer my questions quickly, accurately, and completely. It's clear they want to help and they want you to feel satisfied. I highly recommend A Better Finder Rename. I'm using it to rename all the files in my 38,000 digital image catalog. I'll use it in the future every time I transfer images from one of my digital cameras. Great software, great support.

DAVE BURBANK  I've been using the free version for a while and I really like it. I just paid $25 (a one time fee) for the Plus version for extra security. The best endorsement for this product I've seen is that it was discussed and praised in the infamous "Security Now" PodCast.

Mac Minder
May 8 2006
*****

DAVE BURBANK  Mac Minder represents the end of a long search for a utility to help me regulate how long my kids use the family computer. I have looked at many other programs and found this to work best. I have set up schedules for each child which indicates what periods of the day and for how long each child can use the Mac. For those special times when they ARE actually doing homework , I can easily give the child more computer time without disrupting their work flow. It is stable, elegant, secure, and I have found support to be excellent.

FoxTrot Personal Search
Mar 4 2006
*****

DAVE BURBANK  When I gave FoxTrot Personal Search a first look, I had some difficulty making it work properly. It crashed during the indexing phase. I posted my findings online here.

I am delighted to report that the good people at CTM Development contacted me almost immediately. They were anxious to help turn my experience with FoxTrot into a positive one.

Since that time, CTM Development helped me understand that my problems were not with FoxTrot itself, but with the third party MDImporter file called "Ziplight.mdimporter". They have added a new feature to the program (in version 1.0.6) so that users can disable specific mdimporter files as needed.

My current impressions of FoxTrot are:

It is elegant, stable, fast, fun, and it keeps getting better. FoxTrot finds what I'm looking for VERY fast. I have turned SpotLight off and rely on FoxTrot for my searching needs.

I am extremely impressed with the people at CTM Development. They are responsive and clearly work hard to make their products better.

Hijack iT!
Dec 9 2005
*****

DAVE BURBANK  It seems that some here don't understand what Hijack iTunes does. I just paid my registration fee about a month ago and I'm VERY happy I did. Apple's iTunes is cool. Audio Hijack Pro is awesome. Hijack iTunes allows you to get Apple's iTunes and Audio Hijack Pro working as an automated team. I use a Creative MP3 player with my 14 inch iBook. Hijack iTunes lets me automate the conversion of my protected audio files (music, audio books, podcasts, etc.) into MP3 while I sleep! This makes it easy to move these files over to my Creative MP3 player. Hijack iTunes does all this work intelligently. It even transfers all the information about each file over to the new file. Hijack iTunes is great, definitely worth the money. (I'm not connected in any way with the developer. I wrote this review because it seems the software is getting a bad rap from people who don't understand what it does.)
