NetNewsWire | Aug 3 2009 |
DARYLF2 I tried Vienna some more and its growing on me. Its pretty customizable, with css-based themes much like NetNewsWire. Once I customized a theme to use my beloved Myriad Pro and Minion Pro typefaces in larger sizes then the "Apple Mail" them I am using, I was VERY happy with Vienna's visual presentation of the RSS articles. I'm still getting used to the slightly different keyboard shortcuts, but its working well so far. And the latest versions of Vienna seem more stable as well. (Version 3.2b13)

DARYLF2 TESLANAUT, it was version 2.0.1. SJK, yes I tried Vienna. While it is very promising, it is also not very stable and lacking many of the navigation features I've come to rely on. TESLANAUT, I'm perfectly happy to pay a reasonable shareware fee for the new version of NetNewsWire if it gets rid of the ads. But will they even be offering a paid, ad-free version? I haven't seen that they will, but I'm hoping for it. I like NetNewsWire a lot, but I don't like the suddenness of this change and the inconvenience it is imposing on many NetNewsWire users. DARYLF2 I agree. I've used NetNewsWire for years, having purchased a license back in 2005 when it was still shareware. What alternatived are there? I've tried Fire and Times, but neither seem very good if you have a lot of feeds (I have 50-60 feeds, spread across about a dozen folders). (Version 3.2b6)

Layers | Jun 30 2009 |
DARYLF2 I love Layers in general, but the new WebShot feature isn't working for me. It "locks" Firefox 3.5 (the final release that came out today, 2009-06-30) with a spinning power/wait bezel overlaid on top of the Firefox window. I can switch to other apps, but Firefox is locked as the topmost app. The only way I can "release" Firefox from Layers WebShot is to kill the Layers process via Activity Monitor or "killall" from Terminal... I hope they resolve this problem, as WebShot sounds like a TERRIFIC new feature. (Version 1.1)

DARYLF2 Please PLEASE offer an option for the old Springy contextual menu, the one that appears in the More submenu. I've had a ton of problem with contextual menus, ranging from slowdowns to Finder crashes. After a lot of troubleshooting, I narrowed it down to the new Springy contextual menu plugin. Removing the new Springy plugin got rid of the Finder issues. The old Springy plugin always worked fine. I really used the Springy contextual menu a lot, though, so not having any Springy contextual menu makes the software far less useful to me. (Version 1.5.1)

MacGourmet Deluxe | Apr 14 2009 |
DARYLF2 Is there any disadvantage to buying this "bundle" over the standard version direct from Advenio.com? MacGourmet Deluxe | Apr 28 2009 |
XENOPHILE Good questions. I'm curious, too. This arrangement between Advenio and Mariner is confusing. I don't understand the point. Are Advenio planning to abandon MacGourmet and sell it to Mariner? If not, how do they benefit from letting Mariner lard MacGourmet with bloat and then take a cut of their profits? I don't care for Mariner at all. They have a history of acquiring killer apps only to transform them into bloatware. Mariner developers seem to have little creativity or sense of function, so they bloat all the wonderful apps they buy with a dizzying array of features. I was a dedicated MacJournal user until Mariner bought it, and within a year or so the lean and quick journaling app I knew and loved was expensive bloatware. I love MacGourmet because it's a killer recipe manager. I'm not looking for something that analyzes nutritional content and creates shopping lists based on meal plans for the next month. I do plan meals, but I also like to be inspired, and I like to create or discover new dishes based on what's left in my fridge. I like to cook what I feel like eating, not what some list I made a week ago tells me I'm supposed to eat. Are you listening, Advenio/Mariner? Instead of larding your app with nutrition data and rigid scheduling, how about doing something creative? Instead of a rote nutrition database for ingredients, how about a feature that takes what's left in my fridge and pantry, and lists the recipes I can use with those ingredients? Instead of a scheduler, how about a feature that analyzes what meals I tend to cook on each weekday, and then lists the recipes I've used the fewest times for a particular day of the week? Do something exciting, not this dull bloated crap. (Version 1.2)

MacGourmet Deluxe | May 17 2009 |
ADVENIO SUPPORT @XENOPHILE: Honestly, I don't understand your beef. You do realize that MacGourmet is still available as it always has been, that you don't have to purchase Deluxe, or any of the "bloat" as you call it, right? Mariner didn't acquire the product. It's just a cheaper retail bundle. It's a distribution deal, I still own it and develop it. Period. If you have a problem with it, just ignore Deluxe and stick with the standard version of MacGourmet. As to what might happen at the end of the distribution deal, it's not a short term deal, and in the event of termination, there would be some kind of path back to the regular Advenio product. memTools | Feb 3 2009 |
DARYLF2 While I largely agree that "memory optimization" tools are not useful for most users, iFreeMem is occasionally useful to me when all of my RAM (8 GB) is in use with much of it marked as "Inactive". On its own, Mac OS X will free inactive memory this as needed, but with a processor and memory intensive app (such as video capture tools) running, this can slow the system (and this app) down while the "Inactive" memory is made available. iFreeMem allows me to force the system to free this memory manually before I run my video capture app, preventing minor stuttering that would occasionally occur otherwise. DARYLF2 The new features in Circus Ponies Notebook 3.0 look great, but the new toolbar is awful; the icons are all dim and look disabled all the time, it appears to use a somewhat non-standard toolbar control that doesn't act quite right, and its sluggish and acts weird at times. I really don't like using it. I went to the Circus Ponies user forums to make a post about the new toolbars, but the forums were down (I got a "502 Proxy Error" message), so I decided to post here. I definitely recommend trying the 30-day free demo thoroughly before upgrading, if you already own Notebook 2.1. DARYLF2 Works very well with supported apps (only selected Carbon apps). Must be located in main "/Applications" folder, though. DARYLF2 Another superb and stable update. This is probably my most important Mac utility, and its incredibly reassuring to have it working under Leopard. Kudos to Dave Nanian for taking the time to do it right. I had a SuperDuper! 2.5 Smart Update failure yesterday (which ended up being because of corrupt files on my system from an failed .Mac sync several months ago), and despite the incredibly busy day Dave was probably having on the first day of the SuperDuper! 2.5 release, he responded quickly with accurate and helpful advice which helped me fix my problem. The SuperDuper! 2.5 Smart Update then worked perfectly. This level of support is rare and deserves to be congratulated. Thanks!! (Version 2.5)

SuperDuper! | Feb 5 2008 |
DARYLF2 I agree 100% with Dave Nanian here. While using hard links would save space, it would totally mess up the core concept behind Time Machine by changing these files. Plus, who knows what kind of havoc this would wreak with subsequent Time Machine backups as its "baseline" backup would have been altered! Ugh. Its a Pandora's Box that I glad SuperDuper's developer didn't open. As always, Dave Nanian went the "safe" route with SuperDuper!, which is what I want (demand, really) with backup software. CocoaMySQL makes this easy, with a very Mac-like GUI, impressive robustness, and good performance! (Version 0.7b4)

DARYLF2 Absolutely gorgeous! One of the most stunning screen savers I've ever seen, and it runs beautifully on my 20" iMac Core Duo. Impressive!!! I agree with the poster who requested the ability to select our own "earth" texture. That would be a really nice addition. (Version 1.1.1)

DARYLF2 Version 1.36 won't launch on my Dual 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5 running 10.4.4. Deleting the preferences file didn't help. I reverted to 1.35 and it still works fine. (Version 1.36)

SlingShot | Jan 27 2006 |
DARYLF2 I just tried SlingShot 1.03 and I'm disappointed... The password field doesn;t use bullets to obscure the password; its readable both when entering it and when editing it later. The password is also readable in the log since it stored there in plain text. I unchecked the check button to allow a published folder to accept updates, but the log indicated that it was still accepting updates! This could cause data loss! Also, my remote system (the subscriber) could not subscribe to a published folder since it would never accept my password, it kept saying it was wrong when it was EXACTLY the same. Maybe a future version will work better, but for now, be SURE to try this before you buy it... (Version 1.03)

DARYLF2 After upgrading from StickyBrain 3.6.0 to 4.0.0 (which didn't require a reboot, unlike the 3.6.0 installer!), when I ran StickyBrain 4 it converted my database (which took several minutes, but I have 181 notes, some of which are pretty big; my database backup file is 5.1 MB) and then didn't display a main window. I couldn't get it to display the main window at all, even after a reboot. The FlashNote menu/window worked fine, though, and if I double-clicked on a note it opened fine (and I could edit noted this way) as well. Eventually I quit StickyBrain and tried deleting the existing StickyBrain preferences file (~/Library/Preferences/com.chronos.StickyBrain.plist) and then re-ran StickyBrain. The main window opened fine then! I manually restored my preferences, and it continues to work fine. Performance is definitely improved over version 3.6.0, and aside from the weird preferences bug, I'm pleased with the update. (Version 4.0)

SuperDuper! | Nov 24 2005 |
DARYLF2 I'm really pleased with this (FREE for owners of version 1.x) upgrade! SuperDuper is still extremely easy to use, and the new scheduling feature is working wonderfully. I find it clones faster than Carbon Copy Cloner (also an excellent product), but to be even more reliable (CCC would sometimes fail cloning to a Firewire drive, but SuperDuper has never failed me). In the year or so I've been using SuperDuper, it has been 100% reliable (I use it to clone 4-5 volumes, ranging in size from 80GB to 225GB, weekly). I mainly use its "smart update" copy/clone feature, and this has always worked perfectly for me. (Version 2.0)

DARYLF2 Can this convert between Mac ".webloc" and Windows ".url" files? If not, that would be a really handy features, especially if it could convert whole folders full of links at a time. (Version 2.0)

Second Life | Sep 4 2005 |
DARYLF2 I think this is an extraordinary game; it is unique, immersive, and endlessly fascinating. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination (and available play time...). People are friendly and often uninhibited (this game has a lot of areas labeled "mature"; you should take this classification seriously if such things upset you), and this allows people to anonymously express themselves in a way that real life doesn't allow. I think this is one of the games most unusual and compelling features! The graphics are amazing, but do require a lot of horsepower; even my Dual 2.5 GHz GG with 2.0 GB RAM and 256MB Radeon 9800XT gets bogged down from time to time. The sheer variety of building styles and textures, clothing and "skin" options, and other amazing (usually user-created) objects make this world unlike any other. (Version 1.6.12)

Apple Java for OS X 10.5 | Sep 24 2004 |
DARYLF2 No problems here (even TVGuide.com works reasonably well for me). Performance seems noticeably better, both in web pages that use Java as well as standalone Java applications like ReaderWare and JEdit. (Version 1.4.2 Update2)

DARYLF2 This is an interesting idea, but the beta version's execution is flawed. It worked fine in the System Preferences "preview", but when triggered via a hot corner, it appeared to lock up my Mac (dual 1.0 GHz "MDD" G5 with 1.5 GB RAM and Radeon 9000 Pro running Mac OS X 10.3.4) - both of my monitors went black, but no pictures were displayed and I couldn't get the password window to appear (my system is set to prompt for a password after exiting the screensaver). After about a minute or so, though, I did get the password dialog and was able to get back into my account. I went back to my old screen saver right away! When I looked at it in the System Preferences "preview" mode, it worked pretty well, displaying separate images on my two monitors (a very nice touch). This is kind of a cool "voyeur" screensaver, but might not be good for work, since some images it (randomly) found were pretty bizarre... It was fun to see what people take pictures of, though, and some of the images were very beautiful. With some more testing (and the fixing of that LONG delay when exiting the screensaver and displaying the password dialog), this will be a really cool screensaver to use. (Version 1.0b1)

GABE It looks like its not working on dual headed displays (monitors). Oops! If your on a single display though it should work. (I know someone who has a dual display at work so I should be able to put a fix out sometime this week.) Of course all suggestions and comments, bugs, etc are welcome (and you can send them to me directly at gh38@cornell.edu). (Version 1.0b1)

DARYLF2 Nice feature set but VERY buggy. All versions through 2.1 crash on me VERY frequently... I moved to iOrganize and have been very pleased. iOrganize is very stable, has an even better feature set, and is well worth its modest $20 shareware fee. (Version 2.0.4)
