3D Weather & Globe Atlas
Feb 8 2006
***½.

DANCINGSEA  I love both maps and weather thus this piece of software was very attractive to me. As far as they go, the graphics are very good and the spinning 3D globe with cloud animation is a sight to behold.

However, once you get used to the razzle dazzle, a number short coming become apparent. Both the maps and the weather features are mediocre. The maps don't go any further than satellite view detail. In that regard, as an atlas, your inexpensive print bound Hammond atlas is far far far more useful. The software is an "atlas" in only broadest sense of the word. Mackiev could really raise the level of this product by making it a genuine electronic atlas.

The weather forecasting feature is equally as weak. It provides a USA Today blurbs level of forecasting, the hi / low and a graphic saying "cloudy". It would be much improved if the software provided access to Weather Underground or National Weather Service type of detail. I want to know when the front is expected to hit, how much rain or snow is expected, etc.

Because of these limitations I find myself going to a real atlas on my shelf or to genuine weather websites instead of using this flashy, yet hobbled (in terms of information) piece of software.

Netflix Freak
Dec 8 2005
****.

DANCINGSEA  I really wanted to like this app and buy it for the sake of supporting the Mac community, but in the end, I just couldn't get into it. For me, managing my que is not a big deal. Browse for movies, add them to the que, rearrange the que every once in awhile. I don't need any management abilities beyond those basics. In that light, the Net Flix website is sufficient.

Imho, on the browsing and searching for movies front (most important to me), NetFlix.com is vastly superior to this application. At NetFlix.com I prefer the little mini blurbs that appear one you rollover the movie title. I also like the way NetFlix.com displays the movie description, user reviews, and various critic reviews all on the same page. It's simply more dynamic, and in my experience, loads faster than NetFlix Freak.

Yes, NetFlix Freak allows easy connections to Rotten Tomatoes, but that's about the only advantage, for my type of usage, that I could find. Simply not worth $15, imho.

Perhaps this app would make sense if I had a household with multiple users and the need to juggle those accounts.

YMMV, give it a try, you may like it. But until NetFlix Freak provides me with a noticeably better browsing experience than NetFlix.com, I'll have to pass.
