iTunify
Sep 25 2006

DAVINCI  Hello jwaads,

>> I'm not quite sure how the developer can justify charging $25 <<

Actually iTunify is 15$.

>> for essentially compiling a bunch of free scripts written by someone else (www.dougscripts.com). <<

There is one (speak "o n e") script where Doug allowed me to use parts of his code. And this code is not even applescript code. It's one single Unix comman-line which I then customized and enhanced. (Source script: "Corral All Dupes")

All other lines of applescript/command-line code are written by myself! I don't steal code. Stealing code is for n00bs.

And the code contribution from Doug is public, as you can see in the app's About Box, which is a common method.

>> While I appreciate the time it takes to combine them into a single interface, <<

Days of work, indeed.

>> I think the money should go to the person actually writing the scripts, <<

So, that's me then.

And by the way:

The total code of iTunify has 199546 characters and 5120 lines of code.

At a prize of 15$ that's 0.000075 USD per character written by me. Even a charwoman wouldn't work for such a salary…

And you honestly think this is not worth paying 15$ for?

>> and yes, I have donated money to Doug's scripts. <<

Nice. He will appreciate it.

>> The scripts work great in iTunes without having to open up a separate program (iTunify) every time you want to make a change. <<

If you think your scripts do your tasks just well, then I have nothing to say against that.

Just let me show you my point of view:

You can either have an iTunes Script menu of about 50+ scripts or you can just use iTunify which (in the most recent version 1.4) is able to replace about 70+ of the most popular scripts from dougscripts.com.

Once again: iTunify = power of more than 70 popular scripts!

And do scripts have a GUI? Dialog windows, yeah. But a GUI that's fun to work in? No.

If you're an applescript nerd then feel free to use your tons of scripts. But what if you're a Mac user who does not want those oldstyle applescript dialogs? What if you want a graphical readout of your options chosen for this or that script?

Or what if you want to save a search/replace pattern as template for further usage?

It's the workflow and feeling that makes the difference.

(And iTunify is - in many cases - much more customizable than similiar scripts)

>> Some of the scripts I use most often are not even included in iTunify. <<

May I ask what scripts you are referring to? There are dozens of scripts of which most people don't know they can be replaced by iTunify.

I would like to hear from you via email.

Cheers,

Vincent E.

Ps: Maybe next time you could contact the developer and ask for details before you give his app a 2of5 rating. That would just be fair.

For you it's just a click - the developer it's an eminent harm.

DAVINCI  @ FUNNELLPD: semi-transparent icons are NO error! - It's normal.

And the GUI should look better now.

@ MACMEDIC: GUI should now be even more minimalistic!

@ CHIPHEATER: Why use Wizzard instead of Onyx? - Because it's faster for this specific thing!

DAVINCI  @ JONATHAN:

TOTOTO is just kind of an add-on for Tomato Torrent.

For SOCKS or any other features you'll have to contact the developer of "Tomato Torrent"
