DA-LA  I totally agree, it's way too much money for a visualizer. I also bought the Platinum version a couple of years ago but let it expire due to their insane pricing.

Brush Pilot
Jul 4 2009
****.

DA-LA  For what it does, this app is awesome! There, I said it. :-)

When I first started Brush Pilot it automatically found all my brushes across two separate drives. This might not be surprising but what did surprise me is how fast it did it.

It is extremely fast, at least in demo mode where it will only display 5 brushes. Personally I would instead prefer a fully functional but time limited demo in order to see how it handles larger brush libraries. However, it still seems to load the entire brush library even though it only will display 5 brushes.

Brush Pilot is a bit light on the feature side of things but we're only at 1.0.x so I'm sure features will be added as time passes.

Some things I would like to see:

* Show brush size - Handy to know if a brush is 345 px or if it is 2178 px.

* Optional column view in the left sidebar - I use subfolders in my main brush folder and it would make it easier to switch between brush libraries if I could use column view.

* Bookmarks/Favorites - Would be nice if it was possible to bookmark a brush library. Quite handy if you have many libraries. It Would really ROCK if it was possible to bookmark individual brushes within a library.

* Taging - The ability to add tags to libraries or even to individual brushes within a gallery.

* Search - A must if you have loooooads of brushes ;-)

What would make me a truly happy camper is if Brush Pilot eventually went from just a brush viewer to a brush viewer/organizer/editor. I have wished for quite some time for better and more powerful brush editing tools. Not making actual brushes mind you but instead creating and editing brush libraries.

I find the Present Manager in Photoshop to be very basic as well as "clunky". It misses features like variable preview size (Brush Pilot already has this), sorting (name/tag/size/age etc.), drag/drop support.

I realize however that this might be outside the scope of Brush Pilot but a boy can always dream, can't he? ;-)

DA-LA  I don't use the automatic sync either since it requires that the iTunes Helper application always is running in the background.

This script looks interesting indeed :-)

Traktor
Apr 21 2008

DA-LA  @ person1229

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "I suppose having control externally would be a good thing to have...", but since you seem to know what you are talking about, I assume that you mean that Native Instruments don't manufacture an external MIDI controller for Traktor.

I've heard similar thoughts from other Traktor users and while I agree that this argument has some merit, I do not entirely agree.

Why, you might ask? It's simple really. Traktor is a feature packed "beast" and as such, has a wide variety of users, where each one might use all or maybe just some features.

For instance, as I always use an external mixer I have absolutely no need for an external controller with a mixer section (which would make the controller bulkier/heavier/more expensive). Other users use nothing but the internal mixer and wouldn't look twice at a controller without a mixer section.

Meanwhile, other users rely heavily on scratching during their performances. I, on the other hand, only scratch when I have an itch somewhere ;-)

I could go on and on with more examples but I'm sure you get my drift.

I believe that building the perfect Traktor controller is an impossible task considering the wide user base and the different needs of the users and I completely understand NI for not offering one.

(The only "universal" controllers, and I use that term very carefully, that I have seen is the Lemur - http://www.jazzmutant.com/lemur_overview.php, and the Mawzer - http://mawzer.com/. But the Lemur require a winning Lottery ticket and the Mawzer is still, after several years, vaporware. Sigh...)

Presently, there are about a gazillion MIDI controllers on the market. Trust me, I have counted them ;-)

Each one with it's strengths as well as it's flaws. You need to find one that is right for you and your needs.

Personally, I still haven't found one that is exactly "right" for my needs so I muddle through with a combination of an external mixer, the keyboard of my laptop and an Oxygen8v2 MIDI keyboard.

Hear
Apr 9 2008
*....

DA-LA  Unfortunately I have to agree with MSWWSM that the most useful feature in this software is the Uninstall function.

I downloaded Hear to check out if it could improve the often poor audio coming from various video sources. (Movies played in VLC, YouTube clips etc.)

My set up consists of an external MOTU Ultralite soundcard, which is hooked up to a pair of Tannoy studio monitors.

It seems like Hear doesn't like the external card at all. Hear remains inactive when the MOTU is selected for audio output and the computer throws a fit, with either audio drop-outs or the spinning beachball of death, when I try to access the Sound System Preferences or the Audio MIDI setup utility.

As for the actual sound quality of Hear, I can't say as I didn't get it to work.

Duck

*****

DA-LA  There used to be a HUGE void in my life. One I desperately tried to fill with Sex, Drugs n' Rock n' Roll but with no luck.

No amount of various designer chemicals, voluptuous girls or pounding beats could remove the constant cloud of dullness that was looming over my head.

Finally "Duck" came along and now my life is complete.

Ahhhhhh... the tranquility.

DA-LA  Traktor can't play DRM audio files and all music bought from the iTunes store are DRM... (DOH!!!)

There is a work-around though by first converting your DRM iTunes music to wav and then you can use this file or convert it to another format first.

MAMP
Feb 9 2007

DA-LA  Andy, for that functionality you need to get MAMP Pro.

From the MAMP Pro site (http://www.living-e.de/en/products/MAMP-PRO/index.php):

With MAMP PRO, you can easily connect your local server with an existing Dynamic DNS provider, as for example dyndns.com. Making it very simple to quickly make the results of your work accessible externally for superiors and prospective customers. And because you can set up many virtual hosts, you can easily offer alternative configurations or suggestions.

OCEANCUBED  You DON'T need MAMP PRO to be able to connect your MAMP to a Dynamic DNS Service.

I have MAMP (Free version) installed which is broadcasting on port 8888 (the default), I have setup the FREE service with dyndns.org to allow a domain name of my choosing to route to my dynamic home address. Dyndns.org also provide software/daemon that runs in the background on your Mac, which keeps the dyndns.org routing updated to your changing dynamic ip.

I can access my site on my Mac from any where in the world via the domain attached via dyndns.org to my home dynamic ip.

Better still, buy a NETGEAR router as they have a feature which enables the continous update of your changing ip address to dyndns.org.

DA-LA  Some General MacUpdate Advice:

If you need more information about an application just click the... errrr... hmmmm... "More Information" link, just below the "Download Now" link.

(Well... Duh! ;-)

If you would have done so, you would straight away have seen the following text:

"Maestro is music sharing done right. With just two clicks, you are ready to browse, select, and download music from any Maestro user on your network."

Kinda answers your question, doesn't it? ;-P
