Layers

CYBORGSAM  Layers is a great new tool. For years I've had to Photoshop screenshots to extract the various elements (windows, menus, menu bar icons, desktop icons), it's so nice to have them in individual layers.

IMHO this does not replace SnapZ Pro, it complements it. SnapZ Pro is better when you just want a selected area or need a movie.

My only criticism is the default keystrokes which use the shift-option combo interfere with valid characters. I quickly changed them, that process was easy & worked AOK.

Other minor gripe: The Buy Now link to me to PayPal's Spanish site, there was no obvious way to change the language to English. I have a PayPal account, so once I logged in it was easy to figure out.

Kudos to the developer: this tool is a must-have for me, I write a lot of user docs & help & am always grabbing stuff off the screen.

Retrospect Client
Oct 28 2008

CYBORGSAM  The 6.2.234 update stoped Retrospect from seeing the client on the first 2 Macs I installed it on. I had to downgrade to 6.1.130 to get the clients talking again.

SEIKA7  I run into this problem in older versions too. What usually works for me is turning off the client (hold Command and click the Off radio button in the client) and then turning it back on. Other things that have helped are rebooting the server, rebooting the client, and rebooting the network switch. It's a royal pain that the client network connections are so fragile.

QMEDPAUL  Here's what always works for me, no server restart required:

In Retrospect, remove the client from the Client list. It'll ask if you're sure you want to forget that client. Click OK.

Click Network. Most likely it will not list the new client, so you have to add it manually. Simply click 'Add by address' and type in the client's IP address. Voila.

The only pain is you have to reset the Volumes.

SEIKA7  I don't type in IP addresses manually because they change from time time (DHCP). If you have static IP's for each computer, go for it; that would be a lot more reliable than Retrospect's method of finding clients.

CYBORGSAM  I've tried the rest, this is still the best. The flexibility of defining your own forms is the strongest feature most of the competitors lack. I have ~500 entries, it works quickly and easily.
