CULTURE OF ONE  Great concept, but Canadian users beware: this app comes a few years too late for us. Our passport photos must be taken and certified by a professional photography studio, or they aren't valid. Gone are the days when you could provide your own photo or get one done at a photo booth; now everything has to be done through recognised studios. This is as a result of stringent requirements from US Homeland Security - they've been rejecting photos that don't meet there exacting specifications. I don't know how this might affect users in the USA or elsewhere - perhaps they allow you to get a photo notorised South of the border.

This app is still worth a try, though, if you're going to be making photo IDs for an event or business.

ISKIPPY  I was actually going to mention the exact same thing, as my folks had to do this recently when going on vacation (and, of course, I volunteered to help them fill out their applications online). FYI: Costco has very reasonable prices for passport photos if you're a member.

ROBERT  U.S. nationals can submit their own photos, or with any photographer they like, as long as the photos meet the physical, and somewhat more subjective image requirements. When applying for the U.S. passport, officials will look at the photos, and the person or other evidence and determine if they are acceptable--detailed guidelines for photographers are at the travel.state.gov site mentioned above.

When I did mine last year, I did look at this app, tried an online site, as well as a command-line app (passportpicture). I ended up opting for laying out the shots in Photoshop, then using the kodakgallery.com to send it to a pharmacy across the street to print 4x6s to cut up. I had the results I wanted.

If you don't want to play with this, and wish to get it done very cheaply and quickly, I'd recommend getting just getting it done at Costco as well.

GAOSHAN  I always do mine in Photoshop and print them on my cheapo Epson printer. If you follow the rules posted on the government's web site there is no trouble. I've done about 6 peoples pasport photos like this and never had any trouble.

CULTURE OF ONE  This is a great idea, but I was unable to get it to work on my iMac 800MHz system; first it couldn't auto-install the MP3 encoder (which was also not at the provided download URL) on start-up, and then the setup wizard failed to recognise my FireWire audio interface (MOTU 828), allowing only the option of recording audio via the built-in microphone. Perhaps I'm just in the unlucky minority whose hardware is not supported. If anybody has a work-around for these issues, let me know, as I'd really like to try this program out.

Apple QuickTime

*....

CULTURE OF ONE  I would love to recommend this version of QuickTime. That is, assuming it worked. Massive numbers of playback issues have been reported about this version on forums all over the world. Apparently it is incompatible with Rosetta, and the webplugin messes up all QuickTime content in Safari, but my problems have been with the application itself. QuickTime Pro Version 7.2 has a stated minimum system requirement of a G3 400 MHz system with 128MB of RAM, but it can't even play videos on my G4 800 with 1GB of RAM, let alone record them. It records H.264 format at a whopping 1.67 fps - that's less than 18 percent of normal framerate - and it even messes up device native recording (which is essentially supposed to be just DV passthrough). Installing this program screwed up every other program I have that depends on QuickTime components (BTV Pro, Vidi, Formac TVR). What more can I say: there's a reason why this site has links to previous versions and reinstallers. Avoid it like the plague if you have less than a 1GHz processor. Stick with something earlier (and more stable) or wait until they create a new version that works.

Mac OS X Daylight Saving Time Software Fix
Mar 8 2007

CULTURE OF ONE  Good idea, but sadly, not all of us can afford to upgrade. It's not as much the cost of the OS upgrade for me as the cost of upgrading all of my professional apps to work properly in 10.3.x or 10.4.x. Tiger and Panther aren't perfectly backward-compatible, and I can't afford to take a chance with the software I need for my business, nor can I justify the $1000s it would cost to upgrade all of my apps to the latest version. Maybe someday...

CULTURE OF ONE  Upon downloading this program for testing, I was impressed by how easy it was to program it to take advantage of the extra buttons on my Gyration keyboard. I would happily register and continue using it, that is if the background helper app didn't eat up 85%-100% of the CPU time on my 800Mhz G4 iMac. I had to force quit the helper (which took about 5 minutes due the the lack of CPU time available to the Process Viewer). Unless there's a setting in the preferences somewhere to control the number of cycles it eats, I'd say it needs to run across a few more drawing boards.

Chromatic Tuner
Jan 5 2006

CULTURE OF ONE  Funny thing; not all of us can afford to buy a new mac. You will also notice that this software works on OS 10.2 - perhaps another hint that it's intended for use by people who have better ways to spend their money than feeding Apple every time they put out a new computer or operating system - like buying professional quality sound recording software...

Personally, I needed a tuner for fine intonation adjustments in my lesson studio and instrument repair shop. This is a lot more economical than buying a stand-alone tuner. The portable consumer tuners can't touch this software when it comes to configurability - good luck setting your Korg to different tuning standards - and just try buying a professional tuner for this price! The people at Katsura have my respect and thanks for their efforts to provide a quality computer-based tuning suite. Keep up the good work!
