Path Finder

COTTSER  Oh how I wish it were more stable. Or that they at least made updates to the Leopard branch.

Other than that, I love it.

LATRENT  I agree. Having no other reason to do so, I was considering upgrading to 10.6 just so I could get Path Finder updates.

LaunchBar
Feb 17 2010
****.

COTTSER  I was experiencing way too much slowness, instability, and crashing with Quicksilver.

After a short adjustment period, I feel right at home with LaunchBar. LaunchBar has completely replaced my old clipboard manager, PTH Pasteboard Pro, which I never much liked anyway.

I highly recommend flipping through the documentation, because there are tons of clever features hidden within this deceptive little gray bar. Like many of the best Mac apps, it can be as simple or as complex as you'd like it to be.

LaunchBar's index (the catalog in Quicksilver's nomenclature) is much easier to work with and set up quite well out of the box. It also has much better options for keeping itself up to date. For example, when I mount a drive, LaunchBar sees it instantly — and I mean instantly.

The app is rock-solid, and fast. Support is great, and there's a community of folks on the forums who want to make everything easier.

For triggers, I'm using Spark (free).

Bottom line: For those of you considering the switch from Quicksilver, dive in. 30 days is plenty of time to see if it's right for you.

COTTSER  You can actually do #2, by adding it the list in the Quit Applications action, and checking off "Block applications while concentrating".

Works really well.

COTTSER  I just have to say, this is the ONLY Mac app that I really regret sinking my time and money into. I went through so much frustration with this thing that I ended up switching to a web app for managing my money.

Menu Eclipse
Mar 11 2009

COTTSER  This is an almost perfect replacement for MenuShade, the main thing missing is an application exclusion list, so that you can disable menu dimming in certain programs, especially ones where you use the menu bar a lot, i.e. Photoshop.

miniTimer
Feb 17 2009

COTTSER  This is a great idea, and a nice little app. Love that it's scriptable, and the few options that it has are very smart.

Really, my main complaints are that the timer is jumpy, it doesn't fill up smoothly. This is rather distracting. Needs some better logic for when it's filling up the timer maybe? I don't know.

The other thing is that for some reason, I cannot quit the application by tabbing to it in Cmd-Tab and hitting Q, like every other application ever. Baffling.
