Microsoft Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition
Aug 13 2009

COCOANUT  If you're going to upgrade to this version there are a few things you should know....

The downloaded file replaces your old Entourage with a whole new version. It doesn't automatically upgrade your settings or data so when you start it up for the first time you may think you lost your data but you didn't, simply import your old data by using the File>Import command and your old user account will seamlessly be imported.

I had no problems at all with this and it was very smooth for me. Good luck.

COCOANUT  I'm extremely happy with this update. It's a whole new program in the way it feels and responds. The speed has increased TREMENDOUSLY from application start time to managing large lists of mail and contacts. HUGE improvement.

Personally I don't use an Exchange server so I can't comment on that part of this update but the improvements to stand-alone functionality are awesome!

COCOANUT  I have not used this yet but the thought of a simple server environment setup for me to do development and testing is very appealing. I hope this works out, seems great!

COCOANUT  Stunning. I have only been using it for a few days and I bought the iPhone app to experience syncing and I'm very impressed. It's not as full-featured as OmniFocus but I like it much better because of that fact.

With a few exceptions, the interface is flawless both in how it looks and how it functions. Syncing seemed to work perfectly in my quick tests and I'm happy with the application load time on the iPhone (many other apps take too long to load creating a barrier to use for me).

That said, there are a few thing it sorely needs such as better printing and I'd love the ability to handle note objects rather than just tasks. I like to collect lists of things that aren't tasks but still need to be dealt with such as ideas, quotes, etc.

The overall feel of the program is great, the looser implementation of GTD is a big plus for me and it seems to work!

Storyist
Jan 12 2009

COCOANUT  I basically like the software but it has an exceedingly annoying shareware reminder that shows itself every few minutes. Developers need to realize that this type of shareware reminder actually backfires and results in more people like me closing the application before giving it a good shakedown. I would that the developer drop the hard sell!

STORYIST  Hi Cocoanut,

I'm the developer of Storyist and I'm delighted that you basically like the software. But a little puzzled.

In Storyist, the only trial reminder is the dialog that appears when you launch the app telling you how many days you have remaining in your trial. There are NO nag dialogs that appear after that while you're writing. Perhaps you are seeing an auto-update dialog (which you'll see if you choose to have Storyist automatically check for updates and an update is available) and are dismissing it by clicking "Remind Me Later"?

Regards,

Steve Shepard

COCOANUT  I'm looking for a dictionary for my iPhone but, really, $35!!!! This is far, far too much for a dictionary and I'd never pay that much. $5 maybe but #35!!! Yikes!

COCOANUT  There are many reasons to like this product. It has a great concept, it's easy to use and it fills a great void on the mac for entry-level database software. Unfortunately, the negatives far outweigh the positives. It's expensive when you consider there are no upgrades offered and the single upgrade in the past year offered few meaningful features.

The company is arrogant and seemingly driven entirely by it's marketing department not customer requests. Check their boards and you will find dozens of requests for basic password protection....but that feature didn't make it into this "major" yearly upgrade. Nor did many other user requested features such as label printing, template customization and many others.

I WAS going to use Bento and have now decided to dust off my old copy of Filemaker and use that instead, at least it will protect my data.

This company (yes, I know it a subsidiary of Apple) is known for useless (and expensive) upgrades and I'm frankly tired of sending them my money.

COCOANUT  No upgrade, no security, no deal.

This is the greediest company going. For years I upgraded Filemaker Pro and paid hundreds of dollars for marginal features, now with Bento the company sticks us with no upgrade for software that doesn't even allow me to password protect my data. No thanks!

There are many other alternatives; Soho Notes and Yojimbo to name a couple.

LEV  Agree with your remarks except it's not really comparing like with like to compare Bento with SoHo Notes, Yojimbo or any of the other snippet keepers, none of which offer or claim to offer comparable functionality.

COCOANUT  You might want to read the user agreement before you become too gaaga over this. It's a great idea and a very nice application but you have absolutely NO privacy and all the content you upload is essentially given to them to do with as they want.

This type of business practice should be strongly rejected by the user community or else all our privacy will eventually be whittled away to nothing. Read it.

HEYROBT  Actually, anything you submit to them directly (i.e. through their Contact Form, etc.) or anything you post in a notebook that you make public can be used for whatever they want. But if you read the TOS further ...

"Your Rights

You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Service. Other than the limited license you grant in the preceding paragraph of this Section, Evernote acknowledges and agrees that it obtains no right, title or interest from you (or your licensors) under these Terms of Service in or to any Content that you submit, post, store, transmit or display on, or through, the Service, including any intellectual property rights which subsist in that Content (whether those rights happen to be registered or not, and wherever in the world those rights may exist)."

And if someone is totally paranoid there is the option to encrypt text with a password to keep it private.

COCOANUT  So far it's very bare bones but the paradigm is clean and useful and potentially fills a void left open by other types of apps....the ability to 'watch' passively and view their contents dynamically rather than having to "add" a file or folder to a project manually. Entourage gets this right, Daylite, Contactizer and many others don't do this well.

COCOANUT  Yes, I have tried ebay and a few other places but that version was never sold as a boxed version, only as a download, so the chances of it ending up on ebay are very slim. I'm really bummed by this...if you can help me find a copy I'd be most appreciative!!

Apple Mac OS X
Nov 18 2007
**...

COCOANUT  I've been using computers since 1988 and Mac OS since 1995 when I switched to Apple out of frustration with Windows and the desire for a more reliable and better designed OS. Leopard is the very first operating system upgrade from Apple (and I count about 8 major upgrades since I started using a Mac) that I regret loading and wish I could easily revert back to the previous release.

I'm not a lightweight user. I develop web applications, write and manage large amounts of data for a business and make extensive use of my computer for personal pursuits including managing images, authoring quicktime movies and various databases I keep for myself.

After several days experience I decided Leopard sucks. It's buggy, it's ugly and it fails to improve, in any meaningful way, my Tiger experience. I find the new 'features' such as Spaces to be crippled versions of the real thing that's been around for years. Apple is so intent on making things 'simple' that it's losing touch with experienced users who are looking for fleshed out, rich features.

The interface changes are silly. The semi-transparent menu bar is a waste of processing power and is distracting. The new dock is child-like eye candy that would appeal only to a teenager (sorry teenagers) and serves no purpose or benefit from the previous dock; it's not even attractive. I dislike the changes in the finder and find it actually more difficult to use and don't even get me started on the insipid dock pop-up folders. They're useless compared to being able to simply drag a folder into the dock and navigating a nested hierarchy as I could in Tiger. Now I'm hampered with crippled eye candy when before I could work.

I've also had severe application failures. Rock solid applications such as BBEdit, Mail.app or Flash are now quitting on me several times a day. I have broken icons, failed launches, Safari freezes and other non-specific abnormalities are occurring. Standard troubleshooting and repair utilities are not working.

If this is the future of Mac OS I'm seriously considering other options. Steve, I was once your biggest fan and an major advocate for Apple. I've personally converted a dozen people to Macs but with this direction you're losing me.

DUNESTRIDER  I agree entirely. Mac OS X completely jumps the shark with Leopard.

I've been using Macs since OS 6. This is, by far, the worst "update".

300+ "improvements"? The only real improvement is Stacks.

Fonts are broken, preferences are broken (and the OS won't remember preferences). Much, much more.

BTW, don't you dare mention these on the Apple website (Support > Discussions). ANY criticism of Leopard is soon deleted, with a non-replyable email from Apple advising you that they deleted your post.

COCOANUT  I'm locked out of trying this because I tried the previous beta version and now the new beta won't start because it says my "trial has expired".

This type of heavy-handed registration is bad enough when applied to shipping versions of products, but when applied to beta releases it makes the developer look absolutely foolish.
