****.

CHRIS REED  I use Leap as a supercharged search engine.

Superb at letting me see the content of a stack of folders or narrow down the search to specific file types.

So a useful and unique complement for finder and Pathfinder.

I commented below, saying I was underwhelmed by Leap, so in fairness I have followed this up. I have to say this version seems much faster and less buggy, and like the comment below, with the plumbing cleaned out. I payed for the upgrade.

However, like other commenters, I found the spotlight comments location for tags and keywords did not work for me. I placed my own keywords in the spotlight comments using Hazel but Leap did not see them. I could see them in the Get Info box, but not Leap.

I am a visual thinker so file structure work for me. I can see the organisation. Tagging doesn't do it for me. I don't get it.

The tagging thing works for imported pdf's really well, but they are a small part of my HD content.

TOMMAC  Agreed. But this "under the hood" upgrade should not be Version 2 but Version 1.5. Used Leap quite seldom, beause of being slow, without "clouds" (like Yep) and not localized. Well, now itīs faster and I would like to use it, but not to pay for it again. Wonīt also pay the upgrade fee of 29 $ where Yep is included, since i donīt know when Yep is upgraded and maybe I have to pay again.

CHRIS REED  Like many reviewers, I really like the idea but struggle with the execution. I too struggle with odd buggy niggles. I create a tag, ask it to suggest completion and sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, or adds the wrong one itself. Sometimes a tag it shows is there in one list, doesn't show in the inspector or tag window. I will highlight a file in list view and tag it then the highlight will jump up to the file above. The loupe seems to have a mind of it's own at times and stick with a document I looked at two documents ago. The beach ball spins frequently whilst it 'does something'. Like many apps, the help menu is more like an sales brochure or upgrade list, and lacks an index of menu items or features or a structured contents guide. The app needs you to understand a different way of working ie tags not folders but in 'Preferences' it seems like a general chat about all the clever things the app can do, but no clear guide to what the given options mean or do. I have to go back and forth through the whole document page by page to find what I want. I see menu items but cannot find a reference to them in the help doc. So the knowledge I need to work with the app means the idea of tags over folders is hampered by the my failure to 'get' app not 'get' the idea. I keep finding uses for it but give up when I try and use it. It seems like an app designed by a committee with too many ideas that don't quite gel. The developer also seems quite keen to tell reviewers they are wrong or 'don't understand'. Maybe all in all, it works for people who don't like file structure or organised help documents. Maybe it's me ?

RealPlayer
Nov 1 2008

CHRIS REED  From BBC website

'To listen to BBC Radio in the Player you will need to have a program called RealPlayer installed on your computer. RealPlayer is not made by the BBC, so you will need to download it from another site.'

However, this does not seem to apply now they have their own iPlayer, yet this appears as a popup window, like RealPlayer did in the past when connecting to BBC streams.

Not sure if BBC iPlayer uses RealPlayer as it's basis but BBC 'Listen Again' ans 'Listen Now' always used RealPlayer in the past. Go figure why. Shoutcast gives a url, BBC radio give popup.

I would be interested in why they chose RealPlayer and if there is a workaround. I use Audio Hijack or get BBC Podcasts.

CHRIS REED  I know it is beta, still, but this really is worse than 2 for me. Not as fast as firefox, it freezes frequently, often cannot display bits of websites firefox and devonagent will show. The upgrade replaced 2, my fault i know, but surely a beta of an upgraded version should be better than the old version it is replacing ?

Just interested in other people's experience.

With two shortcuts, for new note and note from clipboard and export as rtf it serves as a perfect jotter app form me. Well priced even without a MuPromo discount. Recommended.

CHRIS REED  Excellent app.

I did work with a school recently. The young people photographed school life for an achive and then tried various themes and viewed result to see if it reflected what they were wanting to expressed. The whole thing worked like a dream on a macbook and with a minimum of fuss they customised the slideshow and showed the result to astonished staff and parents to cries of... "You made that. Google Desktop
Jul 27 2007
*....

CHRIS REED  Installed this and found it very useful, easy to use, fast and for free, great value.

However.

It opens at startup and will not be switched off in prefs. After a while I got an error message that Google Desktop has unexpectedly quit. Around this time I started have little problems, mainly with the desktop/gui and mouse actions not working, all indicative of logic board problems. I did disk utility stuff, whole bit... Today my mac would not work. Apps would not launch, then when I shut down got told shutdown had been stopped by the apps that would not launch. On a whim (ie the only repeated problem lately being with Google Desktop) I deleted all google desktop files, which seemed to recreate themselves after i had trashed 'em, or would not trash.

Mac works fine now and i realise it's performance was slowing for some time. Co-oncidence ? Maybe ! But given other comments just be wary of this app.

Scrivener not only makes this easier but makes for better delivery as you can work with detail and overview simultaneously, bring all your resources together, make a task list and prep a script with cues and commentary for printing and use working face to face with clients.

Great stuff and not just for writing.

CHRIS REED  A great little app that has genuinely helped me 'get things done'. Developer is responsive and the app is moving on but not becoming over engineered. It is in cocoa which makes it integrate easy with mac apps (similar apps are java), it doesn't require you to organise things how it wants, it is fast to input, uses drag and drop and keyboard shortcuts and integrates seemlessly with iCal. I use it with iCal, MenuCalenderClock and my Blackberry and it forms a hub to link these all together, in the office and out.

THIS IS WHAT MAC APPS/DEV ARE ALL ABOUT.

Adobe Contribute CS4
Oct 6 2006

CHRIS REED  I have Contribute 3 and have not used it for ages since iWeb and Rapid Weaver. I am not too bothered about chest beating 'not proper web editor' comments, i want fast 'n' easy. But these two seem to run rings round Contribute, specially if you don't use MS apps (on C3 the MS component won't work on Mac).

40 quid for an upgrade which, even by the blurb on the Adobe website, seems not a lot different to C3.

An upgrade to C4 would seem to be a means to fleece the suits. Why does the Adobe website not say what extra I get for my dollars? All very strange.

Adobe Contribute CS4
Nov 27 2006

TIMSTRINGER  Comparing Contribute to iWeb and RapidWeaver doesn't make any sense as they serve different purposes.

Contribute is designed to allow novice users to make routine changes and updates to websites (including existing ones). It's esssentially a scaled-down version of Dreamweaver that isolates less technical users from the complexities of HTML source, CSS, etc...

iWeb and RapidWeaver, however, are tools which allow websies to created from the ground up using supplied templates. Contribute does include some basic templates which can be used to create a website from scratch, but this is not the main selling feature of the application.

I hope this helps to clarify any confusion.

OmniPlan
Jul 28 2006
**½..

CHRIS REED  Upon downloading this appeared to me to be a significant development of OmniOutliner by enabling projects planned through outlining, with tasks and actions etc, to become assignable to a calendar and turn a list into a plan. This is just what I needed. 'Project Management Made Painless' sounded great.

Upon use however, my lack of knowledge of project planning with Gantt charts and terms like 'completion percentages', 'resource levelling' and 'baseline scheduling' suggested to me it is not really 'project management made painless'. Omniplan presented a steep learning curve for me. I found it not as flexible, intuitive and capable of visually organising information as Omnioutliner. It tended to want me to do plan projects the way the app wanted. For example, if i moved a task from one date to another it automagically changed the time allocated. It can only manage my project according to certain time constraints. These seem suited to a standard business model. I was half expecting a talking paperclip to appear. Maybe it could do what i wanted but the 'mini-manual' did not help me much and seemed more like a 15 page feature promoting commercial. It also crashed/froze several times and lost my edits. Sadly it lost my interest too.

Nice app with many features, but for me, as a sole trader and freelance arts and media worker with irregular hours and lots of irons in fires, surely the target market for mac, I was disappointed. This app will be of more use to a small company with a small number of employees and an office or workshop and regular work patterns. I think the price reflects this. A mac app in a suit !

REEDYBLOKE  This was a great app before but 0.8 is a big step up from 0.7 which was more like a beta project. This looks and operates like an up and coming commercial app. There appear to be many new features which whilst not constituting a major new version are a significant upgrade. This means it is much more usable but begs the question 'Were the features there before but hidden behind the old interface?' Documentation works better and uses the app to both demo and inform user of features. Each to there own but this reviewer thinks this is a great app, thanks for distributing for free.

iBlog
Jun 27 2005

REEDYBLOKE  iBlog is a simple blog app which makes up for lack of layout and reader feature functionality available in more extensive apps with quiet but extensive integration into the apple and dotmac platform.

The 2 iBlog items in the services menus means any highlighted text and images, in any app, can instantly become the content of a blog entry.

The automatic abstaction feature means the strap-line and article body are automatically generated with layout intact, all you have to add is a headline.

Works very well with .mac and iLife features.

It can be customised by anyone with a bit of html knowledge and can generate multiple blogs. Support is a bit hit and miss but the developer is there somewhere.

Makes a great news and views, word weighted blog as opposed to a street savvy, skinned-up webpage type affair.

However the documentation is virtually non-existant except for a poor Quicktime animation off their website which spent 90% of its time stating the obvious then rushed through the useful features in a flash. The English version still contains commands in German. Somebody seems to have started a project that is too big for them and not completed it well. Maybe they need a proper task planner that works. REEDYBLOKE  Jasmine is very good. It confounds the 20/80 rule in that you use 90% of its features 90% of the time, this makes it functional slick and efficient not feature rich and flabby. It is ideally suited to the production of radio programmes with music and vox. It will suit people need to put many seperate recordings into a single programme or narrative. Simple and enjoyable to use. Well documented for people who prefer written instructions to pictures and diagrams, my only gripe, I am a visual thinker. It will not suit wannabe music producers wanting infinite tracks, but it does multitrack well. I created a dedication to my wife within 30mins of getting Jasmine using four audio tracks to sound like a manic drunken choir. She loved it.
