Apple HP Printer Driver
Jul 19 2008

CHRIS86314  If anyone is having problems with your Mac not sleeping after this update I think I found the problem.

I had a terrible time after 10.5.2, my G5 Power Mac would not sleep unless I put it to sleep manually. The screen saver worked fine, the monitor went to sleep after the screen saver timed out and hard drive spin down worked fine but the system would not sleep, hence using lots of power if not put to sleep manually.

I tried all forums and Apple support but nothing worked. I saw an obscure comment that a HP file might be causing it to not sleep but I still couldn't get it to work.

After installing 10.5.3 my Mac went into Auto Sleep like a baby on Valium. Everything worked just fine and has since up to and including 10.5.4 update.

The other day I got a prompt that HP 1.1 driver was available. Without thinking I went ahead and installed it. Immediately my Mac would not go to sleep using the Energy Saver settings again. I was P-O'd big time.

So today I went into my Main Library (not System or User) to the Start Up folder and saw two separate HP folders sitting in the Startup Folder.

1. HP IO (it has several files and folders inside)

2. HP Trap Monitor (it has several files and folders inside)

I moved a copy of them to the Desk Top and then deleted them (needed a Admin password). I then restarted my Mac and it immediately went to sleep automatically with the settings I had in Energy Saver.

I printed a couple things and my HP Printers (two of them) seem to be working just fine. I checked the StartUp folder and the folders were not duplicated again like they are when you delete a Preference File.

I will keep an eye on this but I thought I would let anyone know because it sure was frustrating to find my machine running 24/7 if I forgot to manually put it to sleep.

If you are having problems with sleep after this install try what I posted above and let everyone know, it is a very frustrating thing to try and track down.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
Sep 15 2007
*....

CHRIS86314  I am running a Mac G5 2.3 Dual. I had no problem with Lightroom up until vs. 1.1 then it came to a total halt.

As if 1.1 The "Write to XMP" totally stalled my Mac if it was chosen in the Catalog Settings. It would bog down my computer so much that even after I quit LR it stalled my computer. I called Adobe Support 3 times and they tried everything.. but it wouldn't work.

My previews would not load (it would show loading forever). If by chance it did load the preview was totally pixelated. At that time I only had 4500 photos in my Library. I even trashed the library and divided it up to smaller separate libraries.. nothing worked and support couldn't solve the problem

If I unchecked the "write to XMP" LR worked like a charm.

I have read many posts on this problem, even on Adobes LR forum. So since 1.1 came out I have worked in LR having to save each individual change by choosing it and hitting command+S or the XMP file would be wrong. What a pain in the A$$.

Today (9/15/07) I downloaded LR vs. 1.2 I was all excited because it said in the release that the problem with the "Write to XMP" had been fixed..

Quess What.. NOT !! My LR is not worse than ever. It won't even load a file. It took 45 minutes today to Import 50 new RAW photos I had just shot.

I went in and optimized my library (catalog, or whatever we are calling it now). I even selected all my photos (6500 of them) and hit save, thinking that it had to write all the files I might have missed saving since I unchecked "write to XMP". I took about 2 hours to save all the files to XMP but finally finished, weeding out 4 bad files in the process.

So after all that.. It is worse than ever before. If I guit and restart LR.. it just totally stalls. It doesn't work at all and it two times as bad and as slow as vs. 1.1 was.. and this (1.2) was supposed to fix everything.

I will call Adobe Support on Monday but I don't hold much hope because they couldn't fix it before even after spending about 4 hours on three separate support tickets and techies. Nobody had a clue and I actually had to tell them about the problem, not one of them knew the "write to XMP" would stall the computer Hogging 100% of your CPU. The only way to use it is to uncheck "write to XMP and save everything manually.. what an absolute Pain in the A$$.

CHRIS86314  I again find it amazing that Adobe would want you to be their guinea pig for free and give them your feedback to help them develop one of their programs when they wouldn't help you if your ship was sinking and you were going under for the third time.. without getting your credit card number first.

Have they no shame ? Guess not !

CHRIS86314  You are both wrong.. it is theft. Of course I don't have to buy the update (what a stupid comment) but I also can't buy the copy of Adobe Premiere and have it work with FCX. I also can't buy Microsoft Office and have it work with FCX. I purchased a product from Apple and now I have to buy Apple upgrades. So, just like the fact that I can't pull my car up to the water faucet and fill it up, I have to buy gasoline, at whatever price they charge or I can't use the vehicle that I paid a lot of money for.

I have used Apple products since 1984 and will continue to use them, so that gives me the right to bitch if I think 33% for an update is outrageous.

This is the same reason that I quit using and buying QuickTime VTR.. every time Apple put out a teeny tiny update it was half the price of the original program to get the update.

I have nothing against Apple but I do have something against being ripped off and for an update that costs 33% of the original price is thievery and for you guys to stick up for them will just let them keep on ripping people off.. wake up already !!

CHRIS86314  It's amazing to me that Adobe wants you to take your time to give your feedback on this plugin when they wouldn't give you 2 seconds of their time even if your life depended on it.. That is unless you had your Visa Card handy to pay them by the minute.

Since I own all of their programs (all) and have put up with their squeezing every last drop out of your wallet for their programs and then charging you dearly (by the minute) to ask a question about that program.. I wouldn't give them one second of my time or opinion unless they show me their Gold Card.

I guess it takes a real set of (you know what) to charge by the minute and then ask for something back for free.. hmmmmm

NEUTRALZONE  You can ask a question for free on adobeforums.com, and while it's officially a user forum, Adobe staff have been seen there. The users on the forum often know more than front-line phone support staff, anyway.

CHRIS86314  I got the same error, but I got it figured out, somehow the folder name got changed from iWork '06 to iWork-06 so neighter the software updater or the macudate downloads would work.

I changed the folder name and it worked just fine.

Thanks !!

MailSteward
Mar 22 2006
*****

CHRIS86314  I have been looking for a eMail Archive for Entourage for quite some time. I have tried several and none of them gave me what I was looking for in the way of ease of use for MS Entourage along with a simple interface.

After downloading the demo of MailSteward the other day and trying it I decided to purchase the full version (6.x.x). I had about 2000 emails to archive many of which were heavy HTML emails. Most of the archiving went well but I had some trouble with the full version with a couple of my emails and the program stalled. I contacted the developer for help and he got back to me immediately and we worked through the problem. I sent him the mboxes that were giving me a problem and he immediately figured out the problem and corrected it. Since most of my emails were HTML I knew this probably had something to do with it. He sent me a new version via email that worked perfectly.

This is a great program for archiving your Entourage emails, complete with the attachments. After your archiving is done, searching the database is simple and easy. I would recommed it highly. Thanks to the developer for being so responsive and for creating a great little program.

DEVONthink Pro
Jun 19 2005
*****

CHRIS D.  I used DT Personal demo for a while to test it out and found it to be an absolutely awesome program. I used mainly to keep a database log of a large construction project I have underway.

When DT Pro came out I decided to buy it and I couldn't be happier. There are a couple of bugs but all in all it works perfectly. I also bought DevonAgent and it is equally an awesome program for Internet searches.

I was very lucky to find DevonThink Pro and I will give you a bit of how I use it and how seamlessly it works for me...

I used MS Entourage to keep track of my Tasks, Daily Logs, Contacts.. etc. I write very detailed daily logs in Entourage so I have a calendar and daily record of what how the project is progressing. I also use my Palm Tungsten to record voice memos while I am at the jobsite. I also use Omni Outliner Pro for my To Do and jobsite lists.

What I find wonderful about DT Pro (and personal edition) is that I set up a database in DT Pro and I can then take all my Tasks, Calendar Events, Contacts, etc and just drag them from Entourage to DThink and it copies everything, (header, time, date, subject and all the text). I don't have to open the calendar events and copy and paste them, just open the calendar view and drag the event title from the calendar into DThink (pro or personal) and it brings everything with it.. everything. I also download my voice memos from my Palm Tungsten T and drag the .wav files to the Daily folders I set up in DThink and everything is there in one complete daily and monthy file..

BUT !!! what is then GREAT about putting it in DThink is that if I need to search for a log item (say when I talked to someone on the jobsite, or a meeting) I can search DThink and it highlights every instance that the search string occurs in my logs (except the voice memos of course). I started keeping these detailed logs in Entourage over a year ago and it gives me a perfect "Calendar" record of all my daily meetings, events and tasks but I couldn't do a search and find instances of something that was said a year ago.. Deven Think's search cababilities are incredible. And I haven't found a file type that it won't store. To have pictures, videos, voice memos, daily logs, tasks, calendar events, meetings.. you name it all in one folder is an absolute life saver for me. Most being searchable is wonderful but to be able to drag and drop (not even having to copy and paste most) and to retain all the info in such a detailed way is astonding.. It just works !!! And now that DT Pro has multiple database capability you can log everything separate or combined.. multiple jobs, projects.. etc. I searched and demo'd all the "journal" programs and all were lacking drastically what I needed to pull all my info together. DThink lets you organize ALL your info in every type of file format.. and then export it to Work, Plain Text, Rich Text.. you name it. I can sort and print reports from my logs so easily and limit the info I don't need far beyond anything that Entourage could do. I set up very detailed jobsite log sheets in Omni with multiple lists, steps, colors, headings.. and all I have to do is export my logs in Rich Text format and then import them to DevonThink and every aspect and detail is kept intact including the numbering steps I have set up for my indents, colors and details.. and AGAIN, the great thing is that once my Tasks, Calendar Events, Contacts, Omni Sheets (and anything else I put in DThink) once there are in DThink (even in separte folders and files (rich text or plain) DevonThink searches ever file format and highlights your search string in each and every one.. I can't say enough about how this program has simplified my life.. and the ease of getting it into the DThink amazes me more. If you are running projects in multiple programs.. this is THE program to bring it all together and THEN make it useful and not just a bunch of different file types you can't do anything with..

OutStanding, Keep up the great work !!!

Norton AntiVirus X
Oct 21 2004
*....

CHRIS D  Norton (as a company) still sucks. After many frustrating years using Norton products on my Macs I am furious as ever with this company.

I have posted reviews before ripping this company (and they were justified) and now I have another.

After purchasing Norton AV 9.0 for my Mac I had to go through Norton's "Rebate Dance" to get the promised rebate. I despise purchasing anything that you have to send in for a rebate but I was in a hurry and needed an AV update).

Anyway, I went through their "rebate dance" and provided everything they required (original disk, UPC code, proof of purchase, purchase receipt). I purchased my update from Fry's Electronics in Phoenix. They are good enough to give a Duplicate Receipt for anything that they sell that has a receipt. I have used this duplicate receipt many times in the past for rebates from other companies and have never had a problem with it. Even though it shows everything needed and states the rebate on the register receipt.. NORTON and only NORTON will not accept this.. They don't state that up front, I had to wait 6 weeks to get a tiny post card in the mail telling me my rebate had been denied because I did not show "proper" proof of purchase. Even though I had sent them the FOUR ORIGINAL items they requested. Now I don't have them any more they tell me I can RESUBMIT. But since I don't have any of the items required any more (since I had to send in the originals) and they did not give me ANY reference numbers to resubmit to.. how in the $@%#$ am I supposed to do that.

All I can say is NEVER AGAIN NORTON. If you need my $30 bucks that bad you can keep it and then shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

Why do we put up with these rip off companies people. You buy their product, you get NO tech support without paying additional. They steal from you with their rebates (because they know most people will not keep jumping through the hoops) And they just keep putting out inferior products year after year.

All I can say is NORTON.. a pox on your house !!!

NEVER AGAIN.

DOES anyone know a better AV and Sytem Utilities than Norton. I swear I will burn my copies of Norton programs if someone can point me in a better direction. I am sick of lining these companies gold plated towers with my hard earned money.. only to be ripped off time after time !!!!

Norton AntiVirus X

JAMES  You don't need AntiVirus on Macintosh as long as you don't do dumb things like open curious attachments and download too much junk from P2P networks. None of the Mac AntiVirus programs are all that great. And what do you use System Utilities for? It is another program you don't really need, especially for things like a defrag.

ANONYMOUS  Well, if you are looking for systems utility software for your machine, I would certainly recommend Disk Warrior by Alsoft. You can read about the product at Alsoft.com. And while Macs are certtainly quite immune to viruses and trojans and what not, they are still vulnerable. Hackers simply do not target Macs with the same verocity, or at all, as they do PC machines. Luckily I may escape your rebate woes as my Norton AV 9.0 is provided free of charge from my university.
