GraphicConverter X | Feb 17 2009 |
BUGSMAN (I ZAP GERMS) I began using GraphicConverter before OSX had been invented, on an OS8.x machine. It was great then, so I imagine that it's much much better now. Having invested in Adobe PhotoShop I now have little use for GC other than the occasional mis-configured tif file sent to me by a Windoze client, which PS cannot handle. Open and save in GC and the problem is fixed - amazing. For anyone who wants a Swiss Army version of a poor-man's PhotoShop, this is the one. (Version 6.4)

DVD RegionCode Unlock | Jan 8 2009 |
BUGSMAN (I ZAP GERMS) Whoa! IF this works, does it over-ride the in-built maximum changes to OSX/DVD Player app? I seem to recall it's a max of 5 changes, and that's it - all part and parcel of Apples DRM deal with the copyright holders. This sound very dangerous to me. (Version 1.0)

AudioBook Converter | Dec 30 2008 |
Audio Hijack has been the de facto answer for years. I love the Mac developer community for producing some amazingly good value shareware, even freeware, programs. God bless you all, and I always pay up if I reckon the app is worth it. This is ridiculous! $35?? Get out of here. (Version 1.0.3)

AudioBook Converter | Dec 30 2008 |
MONTY LEE I agree the price is way too high, but in trying it, I feel it much simpler than Audio Hijack in that I do NOT have to play the entire book. Unless I don't know how to properly use Audio Hijack (not an unreasonable conclusion), I think you have to play the entire file to "hijack" it, whereas this program converts it directly. The 3 minute trial converted perfectly on the two files I tried. (Version 1.0.3)

VirusBarrier X5 | Nov 26 2008 |
BUGSMAN (I ZAP GERMS) I would not touch this with a barge pole (Limey phrase for all US readers' benefits). I tried it several years ago, at my expense, in an honest attempt to protect my Windoze recipients from inadvertent infections by forwarding e mail messages and attachments. The net outcome was nil - zilch - nada - in terms of detected viruses etc, and at the end of year one I was asked to pay another licence fee. Many years later, living without this application, I have still not been accused of sending a virus to any recipient. Great Mac interface (drew me in - like an idiot!) - but sod all use. A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY. This is software sold on the FUD factor basis. If FUD means nothing to you, do a Google. (Version 10.5.4)

Sudoku Epic | Oct 7 2008 |
BUGSMAN (I ZAP GERMS) Sudoku Susser is donationware and has been around for years. It is truly excellent. The only feature that Sudoku Epic offers that is not included in Sudoku Susser is puzzle creation. Who needs that? (Version 4.39)

BUGSMAN (I ZAP GERMS) I am totally bewildered. I have downloaded and read some complicated installation notes, and browsed the User Manual. None of which tells me, HOW DO I USE THIS?! (Version 3.0)

BUGSMAN (I ZAP GERMS) Please do not get me wrong over what you are about to read, since I have huge admiration for developers who create great apps for the Mac as Shareware or Freeware (and occasionally good value Commercial) downloads. My concerns over this are: 1. Anyone subscribing to MacUpdate is smarter than the average bear, thus: 2. Anyone subscribing to MacUpdate knows the advice already posted by ZBOB - the best anti-virus defence is planted between your ears, and 3. How responsive can the developer guarantee to be when (NOT IF) an OSX virus gets into the wild? It takes a significant amount of monitoring and resource to implement an update to the filtering. The developer, PC Tools, offers no information about its history, size or structure on its web site. For all I can tell, this is a script-kiddie working from a garage. And the name PC Tools suggests a Windoze oriented operation, despite well-written copy telling me that everything is Mac oriented and does not bloat the apps database with Windoxw only virii (aka "viruses" for the illiterate). I know that Macs are in the frame for attacks from the e-vermin, and I also know that every single major AV vendor has given up trying to flog their wares to Mac users, for good reasons: there has, until now, been no credible threat. The time is therefore right for a dedicated and serious Mac software developer to come out with a product, that if it delivers, could easily become dominant. Meanwhile, I will not download this valiant (maybe?) attempt, as the cynic in me says that this is more likely an attempted sale based upon FUD - Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt = buy now; better safe than sorry. FileWard | Jan 20 2009 |
BLODWYN I like the fact that FileWard works on individual files rather than requiring an encrypted container. For me this makes storing encrypted files on remote storage services like iDisk or Dropbox easier and with quicker upload/download times than with a container. If you wanted you could have a different password for each file, giving even greater security against password crack attacks. (Version 1.1.3)

BUGSMAN (I ZAP GERMS) Very many thanks for this. I too had long forgotten this game, and having become bored to death by Sudoku, this is just the kind of 'brain-training' I needed. Wonderful stuff. The program's GUI has a few glitches that would not get past the major software houses' QA Dept., but it's freeware for goodness sake. Five stars from me, despite a couple of rough edges. Houdini | Feb 23 2008 |
Yes, this works, but when testing the App by dragging a folder onto the icon, it was saved inside the Applications Folder. I had a hell of a job finding it again , then a Spotlight search, then moved the revealed folder to where it should have been, then . Yikes! Apart from that, it does what it says on the box, and is a useful adjunct to TrueCrypt on my iBook (the Mac version of TrueCrypt does not yet support the option to create hidden files). And before anyone asks, "why not use OSX FileVault", the answer is that (a) a clean re-install of the OS after a fatal crash would erase the user's home folder - end of all saved files, and (b) the password used is the same as the log-in password which is nowhere near complex enough (I can't remember something like ACbhsY>uZXDYcLvUctuaeRrmzn9eaofAR3hj) to prevent brute-force hacking! Therefore my disc is partitioned with the files residing on the non-boot partition, encrypted with TrueCrypt and now hidden with Houdini. So a big thanks to the developers, and a request to correct the anomalous behaviour of drag and drop saving. Apologies for such a long post! (Version 1.6)
