BRUJI  Thanks for your feedback. We focused so much on Snow Leopard compatibility with version 4.5.2 that we missed two bugs for that update, the gradient in the Add/Edit window and the Date Added field. We regularly run a long beta testing period and would have caught these bugs before release. But because of the release of Snow Leopard yesterday we had to shorten our testing period.

The version change was necessary so that users who had already upgraded to 4.5.2 would see the new version. Usually for something small like this we wouldn't have done a listing on MacUpdate but the site is great in that it reads our appcast.xml files and knows automatically when there is a new version out. So we don't even have to list an update - MacUpdate does it for us.

Of course being on MacUpdate two days in a row is an added bonus for us and all the users who discover a great app.

BRUJI  Thanks for your feedback. Of course we're sad to hear that you deem the info view templates lacking but fortunately the info view is based on HTML which means it is fully customizable. You can edit any of the existing templates to fit your style or you can write your own from scratch. Take a look at the Bookpedia Help file under 'Working with Bookpedia > Customizing info view templates' for more information about that.

More importantly we'd love it if you were to share your amazing templates with the rest of the Pedia community. Just send them to us and we'll put them up on the Extras page for download and we could even update our current included templates. If your are not HTML savvy a design would also be appreciated as it would allow us to see what you have in mind. We're always working on improving the Pedias, including the templates, and we love getting input from our users.

BRUJI  You're right that CueCats do not function anymore the way they were originally supposed to. But they still work as regular barcode scanners.

BRUJI  You can use pretty much any barcode scanner to enter barcodes into the Pedias. The cheapest option is probably the CueCat which can be found on eBay for about $10. Otherwise you can also use regular webcams instead of the iSight to scan the barcodes. Take a look at this post in our forum about cameras and scanners that work well with the Pedias: http://www.bruji.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2637

(Alternatively you can also type in the UPC/ISBN or keywords to start a search.)

Unfortunately our barcode scanning code doesn't work on the iPhone yet since it relies on video frames rather than still frames. But we're hoping that we might be able to incorporate that in the future as well.

BRUJI  Have you tried the latest version, 4.2.1? We've completely re-written the iSight code and users are reporting that it's working great with their MacBook Pros now.

BRUJI  The main reason the programs are separate is because we want them to be good at what they do - if you have large collections then putting them all together into one application will mean a slower program and less specialized features.

It also allows us to keep the price low for users who are only interested in one application. (And for those interested in more we offer bundle discounts.)

Having said that though, the Pedia programs do have some integration between them. You can link a Bookpedia book to a DVDpedia movie, for example. Sure, you're using two programs but clicking on the link will take you directly to the other program with the related entry highlighted.

Alternatively, there's also the Amazonpedia widget or Spotlight which allow you to search all your Pedia libraries at once (as well as Amazon with the widget) so you don't have to have all the programs running just to check for an entry.

BRUJI  The very latest Macs have a different iSight and we're working on getting our code to include those. It's proving a lot trickier than we anticipated originally but hopefully we'll have a solution soon.

BRUJI  You could always sort the author by last name in Bookpedia. Just hold down the Option key and sort the author column.

There is also a Series field which you can use to input the series for a book (or use an additional custom field if you want to keep the series and position within the series separate) and then sort the custom column followed by the series column. That'll sort the series together and then where those are the same, it'll be sorted by position in the series. In this manner you can sort up to 6 columns deep.

Catching up is impossible - we're way ahead. :)

BRUJI  To add man paths to your system include them in man configuration file located in /usr/share/misc/man.conf. The format for including another path is a new line with: MANPATH /usr/share/mynewpath. To open a temporary page in a path you don't want to include as part of your man configuration then pass the entire path to Bwana with man:/Users/myuser/Desktop/mansource.1 or man:///Users/myuser/Desktop/mansource.1

BRUJI  If you want to use Bwana with OmniWeb, add the following lines to the scripts.strings file. (You can access the file by ctlr-clicking the Bwana icon and then navigate to Show package contents/Contents/Resources/scripts.strings) These are the lines you need to include in the script:

OmniWeb

tell application "OmniWeb"

GetURL "file://%@"

end tell

(Code comes courtesty of Bwana user Tim M.)

After that save the file and you'll be good to go.

BRUJI  We are still working on revising our code for the new built-in iSights. Because they are so small, they lack a focus and that's something our code was relying on in the image recognition. But hopefully we'll be able to crack the problem soon and users with built-in iSights will be able to scan their DVDs again.

NORA  Hi Nick, send me an email with more details about what exactly happened right before you lost part of your DVDpedia database. This is the first time I hear about a problem like this but if you tell me some more details I'll try and fix it asap.

And I don't know why your comment wouldn't be posted on Macupdate but I'm sure it had nothing to do with content...

NORA  Have you checked out the html export feature? You can even make your own templates if you don't like the ones featured. (Help file explains how to.)

We're currently working on reducing the size of the jpeg images for export since those can cause files to become quite big, especially when exporting your entire library.

NORA  We're working on including plug-ins that will allow users to choose what web page to get their info from, so we won't be so dependant on Amazon anymore.
