BRETTD 2.0b1 was so unstable, I couldn't run guests for more than 30 minutes at a time. It destroyed beyond repair a Windows XP disk image, and the linux guests I tried to run (Debian Lenny) also became corrupted. Hopefully, 2.0b2 is better- but I'm unwilling to try and find out with anything I care about. (Version 2.0b2)

BRETTD Boo Hoo, someone's distributing your open source software! You should add underlining, exclamation points, and a "WE MEAN IT COME ON GUYS". Maybe you people should actually make releases of the software once in a while, instead of going for years with no releases because you have no long-term planning skills. (Version r273)

VMware Fusion | Jan 30 2008 |
BRETTD By far the most annoying feature of vmware fusion is that it requires capturing both keyboard and mouse. Parallels will send any keystoke to the frontmost window, but vmware won't. This is a major inconvenience if you're trying to multitask and running guest machines that aren't supported by vmware or parallels drivers...basically, any non-windows OS, especially if you're not using Xwindows. COYOTE1 Actually, the mouse and keyboard don't have to be 'captured'... mouse goes to VMWare when the mouse is over the window. And like all other Mac applications, keystrokes go to the frontmost window. (Version 1.1.2)

BRETTD Still has broken font rendering for subtitles; in MKV files they're giant and pixelated, carriage returns aren't respected (so subtitle "notes" are overwritten and unreadable), and they get cut off- even if they're still on-screen. It was promised back in August that this would be fixed "in the next version", but it's still just as broken as it was 2 years ago... (Version 0.8.6d)

BRETTD To the author: Monolingual 1.3.5 (released a year ago, long since superceded) fixed the Rosetta problem. It also detects the current architecture by de-selecting it. Same thing it does for in-use languages. Monolingual also has version checking built-in. I don't know if you're ignorant of Monolingual's features (you should know of what you speak), or feigning it to have an excuse for frightening people into using your product. Either way, MU users deserve to know there's a no-cost, open-source alternative. With the most expensive laptop drives running about 60 cents per GB and desktop drives about 20 cents per GB, the wisdom of stripping architectures to save a few GB is pretty foolish. If users don't understand how to use either tool, they have no business stripping architectures and languages from their system *anyway*. (Version 1.2.8)

XSLIMMER Ok, I won't engage in a discussion about Monolingual. Users may download Monolingual, TrimTheFat, or any of the other solutions, compare them with Xslimmer, and choose the one that suits them best. This has always been the case, of course. I would have liked that you had backup your low rating for Xslimmer on specific claims about our software that we could analyze and maybe address. Instead, it seems the reason you don't like it is apparently based on the fact that other alternatives exist. I can't see how competition makes our software worse; on the contrary, it's another reason to improve. Anyway, we read all comments here and all emails sent to our address. We'll seriously study any ideas, suggestions or problem reports. Do not hesitate to send your feedback in whatever way you prefer. (Version 1.2.8)

BRETTD Buggy (crashes regularly), annoying (triggers system beeps after almost every operation), horrendous user interface, slow (displays a giant "chicklets" display while searching for album artwork) and last but not least...doesn't do what it is supposed to- the searches are too broad (a search on "artist and album" for BB King's Anthology turned up an album cover for Boys 2 Men, for example), it never actually adds the artwork to the files, and it does a search on EACH FILE IN AN ALBUM. NEUTRALZONE Frst of all there is no "they," there is only one guy (Ed Hamrick) working on the software as far as I know. Many of his users prefer the frequent updates. Think about how it works with other software companies. Sometimes you buy an app and there's a problem but the company doesn't put out an update for 6 months and you're stuck. Many of us VueScan users prefer that he fix problems as soon as he knows about them so that those of us using those scanners can get the fix as soon as possible. With hundreds of scanners on the supported list, it's easy to have a couple problems a week to fix. We just ignore all the updates that don't apply to our scanner, and are glad he made it better for somebody else. (Version 8.3.52)

Tidy Up! | Apr 19 2006 |
BRETTD Tidy Up helped me consolidate several "I'll drag this folder to this fileserver" backups, and helped me make sure I got everything off my old Powerbook when I moved to a Macbook. File Buddy wasn't very helpful, as I only wanted to delete copies on one particular drive. Tidy Up did that flawlessly; I create a smart folder with a "Tidy Up label" set for the drive I'm removing duplicates from. I then tag the contents of the Smart Folder, then look at "all files found" and make sure it's doing the right thing. For photos, I use filename, data fork size, and data fork contents. I think a couple of the prior comments are outdated; the trial didn't seem to be time-limited, but rather wouldn't let me take action on more than a few files. It was plenty to show me it'd do what I wanted it to. I gave a "5" for reliability because it has not crashed once; I've compared folders with 100,000+ items without much difficulty. GPSNAVX GPSNavX does support USB devices which transmit NMEA data (i.e. BU-353 USB GPS). Garmin has chosen not to send NMEA data over their USB port. NMEA is the standard which marine instrumentation uses. While Garmin does send their proprietary data over the USB port it lacks much of the information NMEA contains such as satellite, active waypoint and route information. GPSNavX does support transfer of waypoints, routes and tracks via the Garmin proprietary data transfer protocol. All Garmin Marine models do support NMEA, but require an RS-232 connection. So a Keyspan Adapter or Shipmodule Multiplexer is used. (Version 4.0)

BRETTD Works with brand new Garmin GPS units (namely the Cx/CSx units) which none of the other programs seem able to do without making me buy a serial cable and a serial->USB adapter(Is this 2006 or 1995?), so bravo on that point. Downloaded 4 routes and about two dozen waypoints very quickly. However- you have zero control over what is uploaded, and for that resaon, a "1" on features. I can understand downloading all the waypoints, but really, why can't we get an option to only download certain routes? 2/5 for ease of use; it'd be nice to see any detected USB devices listed, and one of the routes did not show up in Google Earth or Trailrunner unless others were deleted, which I had to do by hand in a text editor (ugh.) 3/5 on value+stability; seemed stable the two times I used it, and I can't judge value since there is no price point announced. BRETTD An Aquanox wannabe with twitchy, unadjustable controls, a horrible view/camera system, no documentation/hints/getting-started mode, an infuriating save system, and enemies that half the time you can't see before they instantaneously blow you bits. If you like the premise (underwater rover/fighter, exploration, et al), go buy a yesterday's-news PC ("top of the line" from 2000-2002 should be fine) and track down a copy of Aquanox; it's a thousand times better done, with really nice music and graphics that blow Deep Trouble out of the water (seriously. It's breathtaking) and an actual plot line. The control system is horrendous (you don't even get sensitivity adjustments and it is very twitchy). There are absolutely no explanations about how to use even the one weapon you're given when you start. For example, are your torpedos fire and forget? Will they home themselves onto new targets? Nope! But nowhere will you find that mentioned. The water is so cloudy you can't see enemy ships until after they've fired at you. Some are apparently equipped with weapons that are impossible to see/avoid; on the first level, I couldn't even tell why my ship kept exploding. The view is, for some incredibly stupid reason, fixed in 3rd-person camera mode, and the camera is ALWAYS putting the view of the ship in the way of where you're going or what you're (trying) to shoot at. Your shields arbitrarily stop/start "recharging". They seem hopelessly underwhelmed compared to the first "baddies" you meet. You have no way of telling where incoming torpedos are coming from. It's damn near impossible to aim/get a lock on enemy ships. (Version 1.1.7)

BRETTD WARNING: I ran the installer on my Macbook and it promptly locked the machine, HARD. Not even the caps lock light on my keyboard responded. I then tried to run the Parallels program, and it complained that a kernel extension wasn't loaded. I was running 10.4.5 at the time (been procrastinating on 10.4.6) and that may have been the reason, but I'd still urge lots of caution on this one (ie, close down all other apps, make sure critical stuff is backed up.) I know others have run it successfully, and I've heard great things about the speed. However, I've also heard that it has no hardware-3D support, can't read DVDs or CDs, and has no sound support. That's still better than Qemu which is a dog and darWINE which can't handle anything more complex than Minesweeper... (Version 2.1b)

BRETTD I was extremely displeased to see Acquisition "take over" the BitTorrent filetype without my permission. Also- any chance David can release a new version no more than once a month? These updates on practically a weekly basis seem to be little more than an attempt to constantly "bump" Acquisition in the "what's new today" display...or poor QA. At the very least, tell us what the "misc fixes" that seem to be in every version are...give us the power to decide if we really need to download the update. Does it fix a data corruption bug? BRETT4 PTMac's developer said: "PTMac includes a licensed SIFT feature to create control points automatically." Hugin gives a link to download the very same engine, for free (autopano-sift)- and it is seamlessly integrated into Hugin. It can create the control points and arrange the images automatically just like PTMac. PTMac's developer said: "PTMac also has two preview options. You can use the panorama editor window for a rough preview and to edit windows or you create an interactive QTVR for previewing. " Hugin also provides a preview window that (almost instantly) provides a preview; you can set it to update automatically or manually. So you don't get an "interactive" QTVR preview; you also don't have to fork over FIFTY BUCKS! I still say this software is a ripoff given Hugin is free and does -almost- exactly the same thing. OHMY The difference is that the SIFT included with PTMac is licensed from the inventor. The SIFT linked from the Hugin site is only to be used for non-commercial work. My replies were to point out your errors claiming that no preview, etc. was available in PTMac. Somehow you seem insulted that I pointed out your mistakes but that is to be expected as a lot of your 'reviews' are off the cuff inaccurate postings to which developers need to clarify. HANK2 This is an important point that should be put high up in the discussion -- if I'd known Hugin was available for noncommercial use, I would have used it at least for a while before considering purchasing PT. I didn't know about Hugin; I did purchase PT long ago. I don't do any commercial work, I thought PT was awfully expensive for what I needed. With a 900mhz G3 Pismo, it hasn't been easy enough or quick enough to get much use out of yet. I'm still hopeful. I'll try Hugin as well. I'm documenting 40 acres of restoration done on a forest fire site in my copious spare time -- everyone needs a hobby, this turned into a 200 year project. I've got an awful lot of pictures to deal with. (Version 4.1b8)
