Bosco's Screen Share
Nov 29 2005

BRAD_HUTCHINGS  The load is a little (er, a lot) heavier than normal today. However, I just had a buddy on the other side of the world test and he downloaded in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Molasses, on the other hand, comes in at 10 minutes and 25 seconds. We're still a ways ahead of it!

BRAD HUTCHINGS  Dear Bosco's Screen Share Users,

We promised to have 1.0 done on October 7. We've slipped again unfortunately. There were some things with the user interface that were confusing for many users, and we've done some redesigning of the product to make it really, really easy to use -- "just like a phone".

We will have a new beta out in the next few days. We really think you're gonna like it. We appreciate your patience. And... we're extending our beta discount.

BRAD HUTCHINGS  Bosco's Screen Share is built from the ground up to be easy enough for your grandmother to use. One thing that motivated us to build Bosco's Screen Share was trying to use VNC products to help my 81-year old grandmother with her computer. They were a complete non-starter. We think software should be easy to use.

BRAD HUTCHINGS  Be sure to read the known issues on the support page of the Bosco's Screen Share website. One that slipped by that we just discovered... If you are outside the US/UK and format your decimal numbers like "0,1234", you won't be able to remote control the mouse from your computer. Set the number format to "0.1234" in your system preferences or control panels to make this work. We have it fixed for a 1.0b5 release, which we will probably make in the next few days. Anyway, please check the "known issues" on the support page.

BRAD HUTCHINGS  The next beta will have remote control. We now have it working pretty well for Mac OS X controlling Mac OS X and Windows systems. It works "acceptably well" for Windows controlling Mac OS X and Windows systems. Mac OS Classic remote control (being controller or controllee) isn't working yet.

Expect a new beta by 30-August. Our ship date will probably slip to 15-September. More news soon...

BRAD HUTCHINGS  Wow! Thanks JFM. Your payment is in the mail.

(That was a joke people! We really appreciate JFM's kind, unsolicited words. Our main goal with Foto Trimmer is to keep it simple and easy. We're not competing with Photoshop and we're not trying to be all eye candy with no possibility of getting anything done. Glad JFM appreciates the value!!)

BRAD_HUTCHINGS  Well, at least nobody can accuse us of rigging the comments of MacUpdate! I usually don't pay much attention to anonymous comments here. Users who have paid for Foto Trimmer have written to say it made their lives easier in one way or another, that its interface is really easy and efficient to use, that they could teach their Mom or grandmother or boss how to quickly resize a picture for posting to the web, etc.

Additionally, iPhoto is no longer free; it's a part of the $49 iLife suite. Not everyone is paying $99/year for .mac. And users who would like the same software running on their Mac OS X, Mac OS , and Windows machines can't with the products you mentioned. With Foto Trimmer, they can, and we encourage it.

Best, Brad

BRAD HUTCHINGS  Performance of the "Composer" panel in the Mac OS X version of RealeWriter 1.0 has been described to us as "workable but sluggish". We agree and have a build in the labs that improves Composer text editing performance significantly and adds some additional features expected in a text editor, such as shift-click to extend selection.

We're working on it! We hope to have a 1.0.2 release in the next week. We appreciate your feedback, patience, and enthusiasm!

About This Particular Macintosh

BRAD_HUTCHINGS  As a software developer, I love ATPM. Way back when I released the first version of Bosco's Foto Trimmer, I got an e-mail from these guys enthusiastically wanting to do a review of the product and it generated a lot of interest in my product and traffic to download it. ATPM is still influential because it is topical and thorough. Like TidBITS, always worth a little time to sit and read.

BRAD_HUTCHINGS  RE: Jack Flash...

This is why we offer a 30-day trial (which BTW, Jack Flash did not sign up for so he could not have tried the software, hmmmm...). If users think it's a joke after 30 days, they don't have to buy. If they like it enough to buy, we'll be honored to have them as paying customers.
