BOBBY DELGATO Hi ROBBY.IS.ON, I'm very tired now, but I think I should answer your post, as far as I understand the writings, poster "IDIOTIC APPS" and "Clever apps" are the same person: second post: "You know, what I am talking about could be so easy, - just put two buttons in your password dialog:..." I see that as an answer, a dialog. And no, I'm not the same person, BUT I also would like to see a better handling of password protected files. So I wrote my own review. I really hate it to type a long difficult passphrase without any visual feedback, but, as you know, I ve written that in my review and my solutiuon is to use Stuffit Expander. Both apps are equal on the expanding part and for zipping I use the build in function of the OS. The first post was very rude, but if I look at the substance, I must say I totally agree, for money it must be better than freeware, but I wouldn't have called it idiotic, maybe "a bit primitive" or so. ;-) I think there is enough substance given that can help the developer to make a better app. But at this state there are many bugs in the app. Not to speak of illogicality. And if someone calls his company "macitbetter", it could be seen as a a promise to the public, and the person behind could be seen as very self-confident, so I think he can handle it when someone answers contrary with "idiotic apps". Both are loudmouthed, of course, but I'm sure (I hope) they are grown-up and know what they do, - as we do... ;-) Have a nice day. (Version 1.7.3)

Scrivener | Oct 22 2008 |
Someone called "MACUPDATE-USER" is telling us: "DevonThink is too complicated and cluttered. It is good for what it does... but for instant ease of use, simplicity, yet jam-packed with features... SCRIVENER IS THE WAY TO GO. There is just no questions about it. I have used many word programs, and I LOVE SCRIVENER THE BEST!!!" Shouting out loud: "I don't understand Devonthink" is a good recommendation for Scrivener? Why don't you bash "Photoshop CS 4" for being more difficult than "Picturetwirl 1.0b24"? Devonthink goes far beyound this little app. It's a complete solution for information managment, if you ever work on bigger, comprehensive projects you maybe understand its superiority. Till than stop bashing quality to promote inferior things. Your term "instant ease of use, simplicity, jam-packed with features" is the exact description for: Devonthink. You individually may prefer for example Pixelmator or GraphicConverter for your minor tasks but that's no reason for bashing the original Photoshop. Your adulation for Scrivener in combination with bashing the better competitor is very transparent. I have no other relationship to Devonthink than using it for years for my professional writing projects, what about you and Scrivener?!!! See this as my review, I think my recommendation is clear. I don't use the star rating, think of it as fairness. (Version 1.12b1)

HARRY G. In my humble opinion, "religious causes" do not justify poor and ugly application design ... though they may at least help to pray for a better one! :o) (Version 1.5.3)

StuffIt Expander 2010 | Oct 22 2008 |
BOBBY DELGATO Stuffit Expander 13.0.1 is free and works well. Stuffit Expander can expand sit, sitx, zip, rar and many others as well and is absolutely free. The only thing I would wish is the ability to remember a password for a session of extracting. Its a bit stupid to type or paste always the same password in again and again for twenty files which use all the same password. A clever password managment would be fine. (Version 13.0.1)

BOBBY DELGATO I type in a password, make a mistake and the app quits, thud, no second chance like in StuffIt Expander. That could be better, as you have only "bullets as visual feedback" while you type (How stupid is that? Typing a long passphrase without any real visual feedback and if you make a mistake the app immediately quits?) I don't want to see bullets, I'm not James Bond, no security risk sittin on my shoulder while I type the 28 chars long passphrase. I stay with Expander, very bloated and also stupid but free, for my zip archives I use the contextual menu already integrated in the OS. Thank you (Version 1.7.3)

COMMANDX Its standard practice to use the little bullets incase you haven't realized. Heck that's nicer then some of the standard mac apps like terminal where you don't even see how many chars of your password you have typed. I haven't yet run into an app where that isn't the norm. As for the software, its pretty nice, i love the fact that i can actually see what i'm expanding for instance. and everything is there, it plays better then the old app i used to deal with 7z that's for dang sure (GUI rather then CLI). The only thing i dislike is the logo... (And i don't even know why...) (Version 1.7.3)

KOBALT How about a compromise on the password visability. I have seen this in other Mac apps - simply give the user the option to view readable characters as they type the pass string. I can't write code if my life depended on it (fortunately it does not), but I should imaging an option like that is not such a biggie. (Version 1.7.3)

BOBBY DELGATO —-> @ ROBBY.IS.ON He/she pointed out more than one reason, - passwords aren't remembered, aren't remembered per session - can't store passwords, in fact no intelligent password managment - for every file a an individuell window, cluttered desktop - promising name, macitbetter, but not better than the (free) competitors - annoying trash-after-crash question, and the app crashes often I would prefer to see intelligent solutions integrated in an app, instead of telling customers to build a workaround with other tools. Applescripts tend to stop working after major OS changes, have recognized that many times in the classic days. So ROBBY.IS.ON, whats your problem? Can't read or can't understand? (Version 1.7.3)
