BOBWEINER  Dunno about the app - but I love that icon design - it makes a perfect hard drive icon.

Netscape Navigator

BOBWEINER  Runs fast on my G5 and my Macbook Pro. I really like the Mini Browser feature - quite handy when I'm on MacUpdate or Macsurfer. Linkpad is another great addition that sets this browser apart from the rest. Well done, Netscape!

BOBWEINER  Works well - and I use it in conjunction with QuickSilver. I run many apps, some of which I use far more frequently than others. Those frequently used apps, I use QS to launch. Those rarely used apps (mostly utilities) that I need every few weeks or months I put into RapidoStart. Some of these I downloaded a while back but had forgotten, putting them in RapidoStart makes it easy to access them quickly.

BOBWEINER  The 1.7.2 update worked like a snap for me. I had problems with setting up the IIGS under 1.7.1 (namely, creating a 32MB disk image wouldn't work). Now all I need to do is find a way to grab all my old data from 3.5" disks onto my G5.... :)

iDefrag

****.

BOBWEINER  I purchased iDefrag based on positive comments I had read online. I ran it from a secondary drive, defragging my primary drive in the process. Everything ran smoothly (I chose the full optimization routine) - it took about 4 hours to run on my 400GB hard drive (the drive is less than half-full). Did I notice any significant speed-ups after defragging? Yes - applications launch appreciably faster now than compared to before. Is it worth $30? That's really up to you. I think a fair price for this app should be $20.

Microsoft Office 2004

BOBWEINER  I have applied this update on G4 and G5 systems in our office and at home with no problems encountered. After the updates, the launch times of Excel, Powerpoint, and Office all seem to be MUCH faster now - compared with a somewhat sluggish launch time before. Very happy (and impressed) with the improvements.

ALANR  Launch of Excel and Word does seem faster. I'm not a regular user of the other programs.

X-Words Deluxe
Mar 12 2006
*****

BOBWEINER  Are you looking for a fantastic computer version of Scrabble (plus a slew of other Scrabble-based games)? Then you've got to check out X-Words Deluxe. You can play against the computer, or using the very easy to set-up GameSmith, you can play against others online. The game itself is a lot of fun for Scrabble hounds like myself. There are plenty of options included to adjust various aspects of the game, including board layout, penalties for turns lasting more than 25 minutes, etc.

The trickiest aspect to the game was figuring out how to host a game. I have a router and had to set port-forwarding on it in order to host a game. It was frustrating at first, but once I found the solution on Freeverse's site, I was able to host an X-Word game and invite others to play.

If you're looking for a top quality Scrabble game for OSX, look no further than X-Words Deluxe. Download the trial version - it will give you a good feel for what this game is like.

Highly recommended.

BOBWEINER  found out about this program from a positive MacWorld review. After a few days of playing with it, I decided to register the program. In short, it does what it says it does and it does it well. Kudos to the developer.

Path Finder

BOBWEINER  Rock solid and a stellar replacement for Apple's Finder. I've used it extensively for the last month and haven't had one problem or complaint. I had last used this program when it was dubbed SNAX several years ago. I'm happy to return back to the CocoaTech fold with PathFinder 4.0.x.

BOBWEINER  3.5.1 fixes the server timeout issue I had (see my previous comment below). Everything works the way it has in the past. Awesome!

BOBWEINER  With the new 3.5 release I've noticed something odd happening (which never happened before in previous releases). Notably, if I've stayed logged into an FTP site for more than an hour, and attempt to copy a file from 'my stuff' to a folder in 'their stuff', I get an error. I have to then disconnect and reconnect, at which point said file copies over without any problems.

I've never had this problem before - it seems to be introduced with 3.5. Any suggestions on what I could do to fix this problem, assuming it's a setting issue?

BOBWEINER  The 9.1 update installer bombed out with an error message midway through. Anyone else experience the same thing?

GRAVITON  I have the same problem of not being able to install the 9.1 upgrade (I get an error), so I can't upgrade to 9.5.

It sucks!
