BEZIERBOY  Version 2.0.10 is a Universal Binary and runs great on my Intel Core 2 Duo PowerBook under 10.5.8 Leopard (I'll repost a comment when I get Snow Leopard.)

This game keeps getting better over time, with significantly improved graphics being the big step up in version 2.0. You won't mistake it for Unreal Tournament III, but a good description of it would be "Quake 3 with tanks, tons of maps and cool powerups, and a very active server and development community".

A seriously fun way to waste time. Note that you need net access, this is a multiplayer-only game.

***..

BEZIERBOY  Version 2.0, which I somehow missed when it came out (the "Update" feature in version 1.01 didn't find it), is a whole new game from version 1.0. The somewhat random card game at the beginning that decides your weaponry, defense preparations, order of combat, etc. is quite different from the "use time to buy upgrades" and "start out with everyone even, or random" from version 1.0.

The graphics have been changed from a stark, DEFCON terminal appearance to something cartoonish, complete with 8-bit-style sound effects. I'm not sure this is an improvement, but it does provide more detail. The basic gameplay has changed somewhat due to no more resource allocation past the initial card game, and something has been lost here. I just didn't find the card game as fun as building up weaponry and defenses over time, though it does offer new options like "First Strike", "Disperse Population", secret (hidden) airfields and launch sites, hardened silos, etc.

I'd keep both versions around and play each depending on mood. Version 2.0 is a more elaborate game, but as with Apple iMovie (et al) upgrades, things have been lost with the version update. Perhaps there'll be a version 3.0 that incorporates in-game upgrades as well as the card game at the start. I also found the v2.0 cartoony graphics less appealling despite the increased detail.

For a free game, this is a good time-waster ;-)

BEZIERBOY  Extremely cute graphics. Neat twist on tower defense.

Fun, varied gameplay (the mini games are actually an important diversion from the main gameplay.)

A difficulty and learning curve that's well-adjusted.

Addictive as all hell.

Only criticism I have is that it introduces new gameplay elements a bit slowly, i.e. they require a large amount of play time to see. Also, it's almost TOO addictive, in that Popcap game "Gee, how'd it get to be 4 a.m.?" way.

BEZIERBOY  Yeah, it had its charms compared to iStumbler, but sorry folks, not worth the $9.95 more than $0 to me. If it were a nominal fee like $2 I'd consider paying as that's what I'd say its special features are worth. Of course I don't use those features much, all I want is a basic listing of available networks, their encryption, and signal strength 99% of the time.

Sigh.

BEZIERBOY  Confirming that it crashes on launch on an Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook, OS X 10.5.6, citing "internal error".

Version 9.0.x was (and still is) useless as well, hence I use Preview or the paid version of Acrobat 8 I have.

WTF, Adobe?

Transmission

BEZIERBOY  I am hesitant to post a review of beta software that the developer has stated on his own website: "Please do NOT submit this to websites such as MacUpdate and VersionTracker." (http://forum.transmissionbt.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6310)

But, since the cat's out of the bag and this is up here as well as VersionTracker, I will say that I've found the 1.40b1 version stable and significantly faster than the 1.3.4 version when used with automatic port mapping behind my Linksys wireless router with no port forwarding set up, so much so that I've stopped using muTorrent via Parallels, and am no longer drooling so hard over the upcoming Mac version of muTorrent (http://mac.utorrent.com).

Of course, as beta software, this has bugs that the release versions don't. For those on the bleeding edge, go to the developer's website and download the latest nightly build. No, I am not posting the URL, this is for those who care enough to figure it out for themselves. And there are good reasons to stick to 1.3.4 if you're not a beta-software type of user.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  See the home page for Transmission: http://www.transmissionbt.com/index.php

Do you see _any_ advisory that this version should not have been posted? No, because as of this moment there isn't one and there wasn't one when I 'discovered' this 1.40 beta version at the home page for Transmission, so naturally I posted it.

If it is on the home page with absolutely no advisory that it should not be posted to the usual sites then it is fair game.

Thus, it was posted here. End of story.

BEZIERBOY  Download link broken. Cannot find software anywhere on link to developer's site, which appears somewhat broken as well. VersionTracker links are broken as well.

Sounded like fun, but this is useless if you can't even download it :-(

Atari800MacX
Apr 15 2007

BEZIERBOY  If you are running this on a Mac with integrated Intel GMA 950 video (such as a MacBook or the cheapest iMac), be sure to use software rendering (not OpenGL, which it defaulted to on my system) in the Display->Renderer section of Preferences.

I recently switched from a PowerBook G4 to a 2 GHz Core Duo MacBook, and I was wondering why certain Atari games I still play (most notably M.U.L.E. and Murder on the Zinderneuf) ran like molasses unless I sped up the emulation speed to at least 150%. That's a bad solution as it then makes other less graphically intensive Atari programs run too fast. As soon as I set the graphics rendering to "Software", all my problems ended. Amazing that a dual-core 2GHz CPU is so hobbled by integrated video that it ran this slower than a 4 year old 1.25 GHz G4 PowerBook with a Radeon 9600 video chipset in OpenGL mode. Those of you with MacBook Pros or desktop Macs other than the lowest-end "educational edition" iMac won't ever see this problem, but a lot of us like the small size of the MacBooks, not to mention the price.

Also, be very careful with the setting the filepath to the Atari ROMs folder. Setting this up and then moving the "Atari800MacX" application folder into anything other than the main /Applications folder will cause a loss of ability to find the ROMs unless you manually reset the filepathing. No ROMs and Atari800MacX doesn't run at all.

P.S. Atari ROMs are easy enough to find with Google, but you will have to do it yourself and set a few preferences up before this will work. Once things are set up, it's quite easy to use, and runs flawlessly. I'm sure I'm not the only one who still enjoys retro games like Archon or Jumpman.
