SafariStand | Jan 1 2008 |
BALTHAMOS For those of you having trouble installing SafariStand, here is a few tips to get it up and running: These commands are run in Terminal.app (~/Applications/Utilities/) [Taken from Allan Odgaard's post] [Bracketed items in 'b' are my annotations, just so Allan doesn't get blamed for anything I might get wrong] # remove all local input managers # [b] You may need to sudo this, or you can do it yourself carefully. This an rm command, so always take care of what you type in. rm -rf ~/Library/InputManagers # set permissions properly on system wide input managers sudo chmod -R go-w /Library/InputManagers sudo chown -R root:admin /Library/InputManagers These commands are to make sure that SIMBL gets loaded correctly. Of course, SIMBL needs to get configured properly in order for this plugin to load properly. There are links to all of this information through the SafariStand website; you just have to dig a little for it. (Version 3.0L151)

GeekTool | Nov 27 2007 |
BALTHAMOS I'm running Leopard (10.5.1) on a MBP and I have been having sleep issues with Geektool running. Of course, I can close the lid and it will fall asleep, but if Geektool is running and I just let the Power Saving preferences take it's toll, it doesn't fall asleep. If the refresh time on a GT entry is greater than the sleep time, the machine will fall asleep. But that kind of eliminates the whole purpose of the utility if I can only refresh every 10 minutes. Does anyone have a solution to this problem, or at least experience the same problem I'm having? (Version 2.1.2)

MJL Thanks for your reply! Here's what I found in the Console: 2007-10-23 20:15:38.864 NoiseUB[402] NoiseGenerator::startAudio 2007-10-23 20:15:38.970 NoiseUB[402] NoiseGenerator::AudioDeviceSetProperty setting buffer size status 2007-10-23 20:15:40.313 NoiseUB[402] NoiseGenerator::AudioDeviceStart status 2007-10-23 20:15:46.017 NoiseUB[402] NoiseGenerator::AudioDeviceStop status 2007-10-23 20:15:48.177 NoiseUB[402] There are several more instances of starting and stopping, but no indications of an error. There's a ten-digit number that follows the setting buffersize and the starts and stops, the same number each time. In case it's a number in some way specific to my Mac, I've omitted it here. MJL I'm using the regular internal speakers. Here are some more details: if I start NoiseUB with headphones plugged in, the program produces noise. That was also the case with the original PPC version of the program. If I then unplug the headphones, I get a spluttering sort of noise from the MacBook's speakers. If I then click Silence and Noise again, I get pretty consistent noise through the internal speakers, but it's interrupted slightly by typing, by opening programs, by opening tabs in Firefox -- in short, by any activity. There are small gaps that seem related to any other activity. NoiseUB isn't using huge amounts of CPU or memory -- 2.3% CPU, 14.2 MB RAM. If I quit NoiseUB and open it again without headphones plugged in, there's no sound. Hope this info helps, and thanks for your work on this helpful program. (Version 1.1)

Utility Lock | Sep 7 2007 |
BALTHAMOS Looked like a promising application. I'm assuming it works quite well on desktop machines, but this was driving me nuts on my MacBook Pro. Every time the computer tried to wake up when it was closed (USB activity, Bluetooth keyboard wake, mouse wake), the computer would attempt to wake up, then fall asleep (like it normally would). Though when you tried to actually use it again (open lid) the screen would stay black and could only be fixed by a hard restart. Same goes for trying to use clamshell mode; would just wake up, maybe put black pixels on the second screen, and fall asleep again. It exhibits the same problems as I described earlier. Great concept and idea, but bad support for these types of situations. I would stay away if you are a laptop user. (Version 1.0.3a)

BALTHAMOS Great application; works how I want it to. And if you want to use this application, but still have your computer lock when it sleeps, then I suggest using a utility like Utility Lock. BALTHAMOS Another excellent application from Blacktree. Great for surfing at night when you don't want to light up the whole room. The only thing that I have trouble with is switching in and out of day/night mode. If you could mod + click the menu extra to switch, that would be pretty slick. Also, if I am surfing and want to look at a picture or text (full color, standard settings), it would be nice if there was a way I could draw a box around that part of the screen, and it would temporarily open a "window" so that I could read the text/look at the picture, then when you click out of the box, it's all back to night mode (think how Preview handles it's crop box selection). BALTHAMOS I really can't do anything slick with VLC; it does not give it's player state in any external format that I know of. I could implement a really rough version, that just plays on plug, stops on pull. It would not be able to detect what VLC is doing, just do what it's told to do. That being said, it would not be able to use some of the same advanced functions that have been implemented into the iTunes portion. As for MPlayer, I have never used it before. There also seems to be two versions? I am confused on which one is the "right one" to be using. Even then, it may be just like VLC: not providing the needed information to function properly. (Version 0.95)

BALTHAMOS If iTunes is not frontmost, or you have to leave quickly, it is easier just to pull out your headphones than to bring up iTunes and hit pause or to use a keystroke to pause it. For instance, I use Quicksilver mostly for pausing iTunes, but when I need to get something from across the room, then I just pull it, go get it, then come back; a lot faster and more efficient than hitting the pause/play button twice. BALTHAMOS To get this to work, you need the vital info file. To get it, look in the file you downloaded for the folders: /Source/build/Debug/Creammonkey/Info Copy the "Info" file into the normal installation place: ~/Library/InputManagers/Creammonkey/ Both the bundle and the info file go in the same folder. You need to create the folder "Creammonkey" yourself. Feel free to contact me if you need help.

Tunatic | Dec 16 2005 |
BALTHAMOS Does what it says. Worked for some of my songs, but it needs more. The cool thing is if you get the other half to it. The way it works, from my understanding, is that it gets the fingerprint of what a song looks like, and uploads it to the main database. So you get the program linked below, and it will listen to iTunes as you play and upload the fingerprints automatically. http://www.wildbits.com/tunatic/tunalyzer.html (Version 1.0.1b)

Butler | Dec 14 2005 |
BALTHAMOS Butler is indeed a very nice program, but I, being a long time Quicksilver user, found it not as much for the keyboard hardcore people. With Quicksilver, you can move files and whatnot all through the keyboard, and move quickly through folders (Butler can move through files as well, but I Quicksilver did a better job in that part. I wish the apps were combined, because both have what I want, and each have their own flaws. So the final verdict? If you want all out keyboard, go with Quicksilver. If you want lots of functionality, go with Butler. (Version 4.0b29)
