BMEGUY  Although some people might be turned off by the fact that this is a Java-based program, remember:

for people who have to use windows at work or who want to collaborate with Windows users, the cross-platform aspect would be very attractive.

BMEGUY  This could be very useful in a research setting. We accumulate 100's of GBs of video data from various experiments but can't access it easily while on-the-go (laptops) or exchange with collaborators. This would allow us to keep on hand and send out image "summaries" of the best results.

Skim
Sep 3 2007

BMEGUY  Source-forge projects do accept donations though. I plan to make one this month -- Skim has become a vital part of my workflow, and I want to make sure it continues to develop.

BMEGUY  I want to thank the developer for making this great software available for free.

It's very useful for avoiding the pain of repetitive stress and screen staring; but also just as useful for avoiding the frustration of wasting time browsing around.

Use the breaks to "wake up"!

BMEGUY  I've been watching this since it came out. Very useful software. I used the demo to make a 16 page software (plugin) manual in less than an hour.

Maybe now's the time to buy it.

Skim

****.

BMEGUY  This is the software that I've been looking for for the last 3 years.

It's difficult to describe how pleased I am to include Skim in the workflow for my research notes.

Already at 0.3 it does an amazing number of things, that I thought I was going to have to break down and write my own program to do. They just saved me weeks of work, and for that I am truly grateful.

BMEGUY  Best of class notebook app. Seems simple on the surface, but there's lots of depth there that really puts it above the competition.

BMEGUY  I'd really like to use this app, but all of the pdfs I use have two columns, so until it can do rectangular text selections (like Preview or TextEdit or most other cocoa apps) it's useless to me.

Here's hoping for the future.

Tex-Edit Plus X
Apr 13 2006

BMEGUY  Actually it does have something to do with Tex, which is short for Texas.

Of course, it isn't directly related to TeX, but you weren't asking that, were you.

[If you're going to be anal about names, make sure that you at least spell them accurately, otherwise your self-righetous rant falls a bit flat.]

BMEGUY  This has to be one of the coolest programs I've seen in a while for monitoring what's going on in the background while you're working.

Thanks.

BMEGUY  There is a firmware setting that prevents the ibook from staying awake while the lid is closed. It's to protect your ibook, since one of the main escapes for heat is through the keyboard. (remember the ibook doesn't have the heat-sinking metal case of the powerbooks.) There are some ways to override this setting; try googling "clamshell mode ibook"

BMEGUY  Great utility. Helped me decide between two LCD monitors--I could quickly and easy find the one with dead and stuck pixels. There was one stuck RED pixel, that I wouldn't have noticed during browser and word processor use, but that stuck out like a sore thumb when I tried a DVD. Without this utility I might not have found it.

Additionally, it has a test pattern to help you set the phase shift--something I wouldn't have know to calibrate on my new monitor.

Thanks!

BMEGUY  This is one of the most used pieces of software on my machine. If you only use it as an application launcher, it's worth it. (but to be honest I've never tried Butler or Lauchbar, both of which seem to have very loyal user bases.)

However, it can really be so much more, if you're trying it out (or even using it regularly as just a laucher) try out these functions:

clipboard history

shelf module

append to file...

open URL

process text with your own Applescript

move files around on your system

BMEGUY  I also wanted some ToDo/Calendar/Alarm features, and was able to implement most of what I wanted through applescript. (Which I will try to make available on the developer site when I get all the bugs out.)

Now that the developer has included a user-modifiable framework (called Blocks) I'll be working to do the same thing but now in mac-native cocoa. In addition, the features planned for the next release of Mori sound exactly like what you would need, including "smarter" smart folders and user-definable column criteria.

I have a lot of confidence that this app will become a premier writing/planning solution.
