APPOLYON  I think it's so that there are no delays when browsing files in the finder. Though this would have little effect on the startup volume, other disks may see a slight bump in responsiveness, though I'd be curious as to how much RAM and CPU it uses to read every minute. Plus its better for the disks to spin down when not in use, isn't it? To preserve their longevity, or not so much?

WindowSlider
Dec 18 2006

APPOLYON  I like slider even though I don't use it all that often. While the sliding and the fading in/out effects are great, it takes a brief moment to complete. Not for the excessive optimizers.

A couple of things to note though. It doesn't play nice with Growl. It slides in the notifications nicely, but it flickers back into place slightly on the exit. Nothing harmful, just odd. Same sort of thing with InvisRay, except on the start. It flickers for a moment as it begins the display. Again, purely cosmetic, but worth noting. If you use Unsanity's APE you might as well try it out.

Menufela
Dec 17 2006

APPOLYON  There is nothing cooler than having the menu bar hidden away and Menufela does it simply and easily. Plus seeing as I no longer use Spotlight its nice to remove that from the bar, even if it's only really cosmetic.

Just a couple of things. First, under this beta some applications can't launch or launch properly while the bar is hidden. A couple of examples are Speed Freak which begins to consume insane amounts of CPU. It runs as normal when the menu bar hiding is off. The widget Net Re-connector also fails to re-connect when the menu is hidden. There may be other instances when hiding affects other applications but for now I've stopped doing that. Second, what exactly is the Kiosk mode? There is no documentation on it at all.

Can't wait for the next update!

APPOLYON  Nice little app! Very easy to use, but it seems a waste to create a preference pane just for one check box... So perhaps some more options?

I use InvisRay for my application translucating (made up word) needs. It has the ability to make transparent the applications your not using. Perhaps you could take a crack at that? If you combined that with that smooth animation you use with the Keep Afloat command you'd really have something amazing and very Mac like.

L0NE  Everyone, thanks.

@Appolyon: I'm planning to add preferences to the pane very soon (it's one of the most requested features). Also, animation is there but a bug with the Intel version of Mac OS X prevents it from working correctly on MacBooks and MacBook Pros, so it's turned off (but only for Intel users).

Thank you for your feedback, everyone.

InvisRay

APPOLYON  I really dig InvisRay. If you haven't tried it out yet you should at least once.

One question though... why does this download a prefpane that says it's version 1.0?

APPTRACTIVE  Seems I made a mistake with the version number when building the latest PrefPane. Not worth releasing 2.0.2 for, though it is a bit embarrassing for people who like to Get Info on their PrefPanes.

Speed Freak

****½

APPOLYON  Since Speed Freak 2.6 I've had trouble with the app remembering my password at the launch. After upgrading to 2.7.1 I tried to fix the problem by first deleting it's key from the keychain, which didn't work. Then I though maybe the preference file was the trouble so I trashed that. That's when I found out something interesting... 2.7 (as well as 2.7.1) can't remember all of it's preferences. It would write a plist file, but at launch it wouldn't try to activate, wouldn't remember acceleration values, wouldn't activate the ignore list, and only would activate the default options in the preference list. I did fix the problem though, by using 2.6 again to create my preferences, then run 2.7.1.

I'm hoping something's done about this, it's kinda a pain, especially after how long we've had to go without. I personally haven't notice how much it's writting out to other files, but it could be a problem in the future.
