ANON BUD  Quite simply the finest, most comprehensive program of its kind available for the Mac. Hands down beats out Logos software for Windows. I've been using Accordance for years and have never had any problems. Absolutely indispensable for the serious bible student or scholar!

ANON BUD  I just use their support system online. Unfortunately, their initial response--indicating they have received your support request--and all other correspondence from them, uses a “do-not-reply” address. All has to be done through their online system.

As I've mentioned before, they do sometimes take a long time to respond (my guess is they've only got one tech on staff) but they will. Probably not the best customer service I've experienced, but certainly not the worst as with many developers out there which, one would think, have a large support staff and resources to do it right!

Good luck.

ANON BUD  Nice, solid app. I decided to buy the full version because I use it so much.

MS has replaced several other ways of archiving my email as it is fast, accurate, and maintains the full formatting of html in my emails. It also archives my attachments. Loving the search and tagging functions as well.

ANON BUD  Actually, I was referring to an earlier problem OF had in synching with iCal todos. That problem has since been resolved. The webdav/mobile me synching is if one wants to have OF todos appear as a separate iCal calendar and is completely different from what I was talking about. Since I do not want a separate OF iCal calendar, I do not use that function.

ANON BUD  RP download agent still worked for me, too, but the Player itself kept crashing. After several e-mails back and forth from RP support (and a very frustrating time getting them to understand that I am not using a Windows machine!) I finally reached their second tier support system and am hoping they can fix the problems. I sent them to this page in MacUpdate and the corresponding page in Version Tracked to get them to understand this is not an isolated issue. Here's hoping for the best!

****.

ANON BUD  Though by no means a perfect application and though there are some pretty aggravating glitches (all of which can be worked-around) Soho Organizer is a pretty good Contact/Calendar Management system.

Positives:

Prints better than iCal

Allows for various kinds of links for contacts (emails, notes, phone calls, events, files, etc.)

Nice GUI

Good Journal entry and Daily note entry

Syncs fairly well with iCal and Address Book, thus keeping Mobile Me up to date (if you've got that)

Ability to tag notes and arrange in various folders and smart folders

Much faster launch times than previous versions

Fairly good support with regular app updates to fix problems

Drag and drop of contacts on contacts to establish relationships between the two

Negatives:

Search in Soho Notes does not work

Drag and drop of contacts on established events does not work (it is supposed to)

Email of attendees from within event views does not work (the option is grayed out)

Some random crashes, though that is getting better and better

Changed event times/dates in iCal do not always sync to Organizer

I still use iCal to create most events (especially with the “Create in iCal” contextual menu in Mail) as I am able to email attendees from iCal and not from Organizer.

It would be nice if there was a LaunchBar plugin for Organizer so that I could find specific note links to contacts.

Would be nice if I could use Spell Catcher with Organizer.

This is a much better and more stable app since version 8 (and getting rid of OpenBase architecture helped), so check it out!

Bento
Oct 1 2009

ANON BUD  I'm glad you like Bento. I do too. However, Filemaker is notorious for their price-gouging upgrade policies which keep single users like me from continuing to support their products. I quit using Filemaker when several weeks after purchasing v. 8 they came up with a v. 8.5 and wanted to charge $99 for the upgrade (after I'd just shelled out $199! Now they've done that with Bento. I like Bento, I use Bento. But I will not pay any more money for a product that has gone from v. 2.04 to 3.0 and want to charge an upgrade fee to people like me who missed their upgrade date by just a few days.

Other companies have a much more liberal upgrade policy, allowing people in who've purchased months earlier: Omin Group, Chronosworks, and Ironic Software come to mind.

I'm not poor. I make a good living. I'm not a miser, either. But I will not continue to support a company which treats its customers as nothing more than fodder for their money-making hubris.

Filemaker is a money-grubbing horrible company. Their upgrade policy is nuts and I should have heeded the advice of many who have reported this earlier. If you purchased version 2 within the past 30 days, you can upgrade for free. But if you purchased within the past 60 days, forget it. Shell out more cash.

Take my advice. Find some other product. And save your money.

SOHO Organizer
Sep 23 2009

ANON BUD  I made the mistake of migrating my v. 7 database over, thinking that the unique notes attached to contacts would be processed. What I got was a complete duplication of everything! When you first start SO it automatically adds information from iCal and Address Book. Then when I did the migration it was all duped! Good thing I made a backup of iCal and AB prior to this and that I was able to quit SO before the sync process to those apps. I deleted the SO database and restarted and now things are good, however none of the links to calendar items and previous notes remained. SO could use more documentation for this process to let folks know just exactly what happens with a migration and who should and should not do it.

I'm holding off on a complete review til I've had a chance to see whether the many bugs from v. 7.x have been fixed. Though I've seen vestiges of fixes and some of the old bugginess…

SOHO Organizer
Sep 11 2009

ANON BUD  I was a user of Chronos Software's Personal Contact/Organizer back in the day and really loved the app, but when Apple came up with OSX and had a decent calendar and address book, I switched to that. I am glad to be getting back to the successor of that in Soho Organizer.

I've got seamless integration with iCal and Address Book, something which the other CRMs out there do not have (Contactizer Pro and Daylite being the main competition). There are some quirks and glitches in this program and strange behavior, but I do like the design and feel of the program and especially its integration with Soho Notes.

I have to say that in the short week that I've been using Soho Organizer I have filed a couple of support tickets with Chronos and have had good results with them. Very responsive and helpful to me. I am keeping a list of quirks that I intend to send to Chronos and have no doubt that they will respond satisfactorily. I am really looking forward to the release of v.8 on 22 September and its integration with my email communications. When that comes out, I'll do a real review with ratings.

Give this a try.

Just be sure to back up your hard drive before any system software upgrade in case you run into any problems. I always run Super Duper and clone my disk to an external drive. It's also a good idea to download and install from the stand alone updater which you can find from the Apple downloads site rather than from software update, just in case some glitch in the process causes the download to stall!

CheckBook Pro

*****

ANON BUD  I've spent hours looking at virtually all the personal finance programs available for the Mac and I've decided to migrate fully to Checkbook Pro.

I still really like Quicken--despite it's flaws and non-development--but have been wanting to move away from it due to lack of any real support and continued development from Intuit. CBpro is simple to use, it's interface is really very nice and doesn't get bogged down with a lot of snazzy bells and whistles like a lot of the others have.

Right now, CBP is not iPhone ready, but the developers are devoting a great amount of time putting this in place. They are also looking at adding direct connection to financial institutions.. These are not major problems for me right now, as I am willing to wait for their final results in these two areas.

Check out this app!

I find the synching with my iTouch to be excellent and have never had a problem, though it can be a bit slow at times. I especially like that notes transfer in toto from the desktop app to the iPhone app--including html and all attachments.

****.

ANON BUD  Well, after all the negative reviews--and my personal distaste for Filemaker's business model (i.e. charge as much as the market will bear, even for incremental upgrades)--I decided I really could not go without having a useful, editable database app on my iPod Touch, so I purchased both the Mac and iPhone version of Bento. I must say that I am pleased so far. True, there are some drawbacks with exporting and the lack of html support, but this is a robust app and allows me to create many useful databases for use in my work and personal life.

I do not really have to have true integration with Address Book or iCal, so what Bento does with them is fine for my usage.

Apr 19 2009

ANON BUD  Well. After several more hours of working with this program, my original comment stands. I really like the idea, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired and the price is way too high for what you get, IMO.

Spend a bit extra and buy iWork ‘09. Numbers has a nice little template for travel information that is way easier to navigate. You can always add whatever notes and journal information you desire. If you want map info, you can add url links to your favorite map site. It prints up much nicer than Knapsack, too, where the notes come out in gray and difficult to read... Plus, if you buy iWork, you get Pages and Keynote!

I’ll keep an eye on this app, hoping that they’ll release something that is more intuitive and with a nicer, more navigable mapping system like Google Earth. But for now, I’ll take a pass.

Apr 18 2009

ANON BUD  Just a very quick review after using for only a couple of hours.

I really like the concept and believe this has great potential however a few things are a bit maddening to me:

1) No detail in the closest zoom of maps (everything is too pixelated) making pin placement very arbitrary. I have to search the exact coordinates of each place in order to make sure the pin is placed correctly. It would be very nice if this feature used Google Earth technology to make pin placement much quicker and easier. Even having a search function of map coordinates would be better than what is currently in place.

2) Adding notes to itinerary items can be confusing in that a carriage return is not as simple as hitting “return” but you have to enter “control-return”. Trial and error gave me that one. Plus I can only see one line at a time when adding notes. Why is this?

3) The price seems a bit steep to me. The GUI is nice and all that, but some of the input methods are just not all that Mac-intuitive to me.

I’m not sure I’ll buy this. I am currently planning a trip overseas and will see how well this does it.

Time Tagger
Mar 20 2009

ANON BUD  Been toying with this for a bit. I like the tagging aspect as it is a quick and easy way to record the amount of time spent on various projects/activities/etc. Demo does not allow a complete import to Excel or Numbers, so I do not know if it imports in such a way as to create pie charts of activities.

No real ability to add notes to activities except through creating a separate tag for the note which seems to me cumbersome.

Leap

****.

ANON BUD  I rather like this app. Granted, it has taken me a while to tag most of my files, but staying on top of things hasn’t been that difficult. I just make sure I tag a file after saving it and the rest just speaks for itself. I can find tagged files easily and this has helped me in my workflow a good deal.

When I first started using Leap, I used the option of integrating Leap’s tags with Spotlight comments. This was somewhat buggy for me and did not work very well. I’ve turned off this Spotlight comment option and things are much much better.

My only wish is that Leap would use the ”cloud-like“ (don’t know if that’s the right phrase) tagging that Yep uses. You know, where tags are sized according to the number of files associated with them? That would make this app visually more appealing to me.

Overall, very nice. I use it all the time, next to Finder.

ANON BUD  It's a beta, I keep telling myself, but the speed stinks and it's a CPU hog so far. I don't have an Intel Mac and do only have a 1Ghz processor, so maybe that's the problem. It took over five minutes to load the start “favorites” page and three times longer then the previous safari just to load a dimple webpage.....

Good potential, but think I'll wait 'til it's out of beta!

Glad there's an uninstaller, cause that's exactly what I'm gonna do!

Quicken 2007

****.

ANON BUD  I've just gotta say that I am a satisfied, long-time Quicken user.

True, the interface is not very pretty and doesn't look like a Mac App at all. True, the font smoothing doesn't really exist. True, I've had problems with deleting budgets and having the app crash on me. True, there have been some minor-yet frustrating-stability issues, but as long as I keep regular backups of my info (both on my Mac and Mobile Me) things work out okay.

The benefits:

Quick transactions.

Memorized transactions.

Quick reports.

Transfers between accounts.

One step transaction downloads from my bank, including auto reconciling.

Yes. All the popular apps can do these things, but, for me, Quicken just does it so much better.

I've tried most of the popular apps out there, but keep coming back to Quicken.

Only four stars, though because of what I mentioned above.

Adobe InDesign CS4
Dec 12 2008

ANON BUD  I'm just an average guy who is not a professional so I do not neet all the bells and whistles of many of Adobe's products. I purchased CS2 a couple of years ago and have really only used InDesign. This is a good product and has been instrumental in some of my workflow.

That said: I will not be giving any more money to Adobe Systems. I am not allowed to upgrade just the InDesign app from the suite. I either have to purchase an upgrade to the whole suite of apps––most of which I do not use––or do a complete separate purchase of InDesign as a stand-alone (at a much higher price than the simple upgrade to the one app.). Add to this a customer service department that is antedated and ridiculous to navigate through and very customer un-friendly.

Unfortunately, what this means is that I will have to trash all my Adobe apps when I upgrade to Leopard, since nothing before CS3 works with Leopard.

Long story short: If you are a design professional and need to keep on top of the current app upgrades (and can use each purchase as a tax write-off) of if you are loaded with lots of money and don't mind spending hundreds of dollars on each upgrade, knock yourself out. But if you are not wealthy and do not need all the bells and whistles, forget Adobe and go with something else––Pages comes to mind.

Now, I'm not going to tell you I use it for much more than laying out a few pages (I don't use many, if any of the bells and whistles) so there may very well be specific things that don't work in Leopard that I'm just not using.

But, on the whole, InDesign CS2 does launch and work in Leopard.

proNotes
Dec 11 2007

ANON BUD  A bit too clunky for me. The only way to create categories is on the fly. The date column indicates that the date is in an invalid format, even though a date stamp is used and new notes automatically record the creation/modification date. No way that I could see to attach an address book entry to an existing note. GUI is not Mac-like and text is not rendered well. Note formation is not intuitive. URL addresses are not automatically rendered (you have to highlight and then control-click on addresses to get a pop-up menu allowing to open in a browser).

Like a lot of Mac apps that are also made for Windows, it lacks the elegance of a truly native Mac application.

This is not a review and I am refraining from assigning a rating so as to not skew things. I only used the app for a short while, but long enough to know that I do not want to use this.

SOFTRAPH SUPPORT  This is the developer. First, I'd like to thank Anon for downloading proNotes and trying it out. I'm also appreciate him taking the time to post his comments. I'm interested in as many thoughtful comments as I can get!

First, to get my Mac credentials on the table. My first machine was a 128k Mac back in 1986. I've been developing on a Mac since. My primary work machine is, and always has been, a Mac. proNotes was developed on the Mac for the Mac. Anyone who's used Apple's i-Apps will intuitively know how to use proNotes. I intentionally designed it to look like a Mac app. No compromises were made on the Mac side for the Windows version. I'm sure our Windows friends will complain this looks too much like a Mac app.

Regarding categories and titles. I found during beta testing that most users like the ability to add a category and/or title on the fly instead of having a separate user interface to set them up in advance. To keep you productive I figured your time is better spent doing your work and not setting things up. You'll notice proNotes doesn't require you to set anything up in advance. I did that on purpose. Also, to make things easier, when you create a new note the category and title is filled in if you have a note selected when you hit the "new" button. If you want a different category or title, the fields type-ahead for you or you can select an existing category or title from a drop down. In fact, after you select a particular category, the titles listed in the drop down are only the ones associated with that category. There was no advanced set up to make this connection, just by creating notes it gets set up for you. That's one of the many little things I designed in proNotes to help you stay organized and stay productive.

I can't really comment on the text rendering. I'm running Leopard on a MacBook Pro. I'm writing this on an iMac and I've seen it on other machines too. It looks fine to me. The text features are not as powerful as Word but they're not intended to be. Yes, I would like the urls to show up blue with an underline. I expect to implement that in a future release. Regardless of how the urls look, I do personally think it's cool that you can highlight a web address, command-click (or right-click), and have it open in a browser. The same thing works for e-mail addresses and names in Apple's Address Book. That saves you a bunch of clicks. The more clicks I can eliminate for you the more productive you'll be.

Regarding the dates. I'd like to learn about the invalid date format. I've never seen that and would like to fix it if it's a bug. I have 1,000 notes in proNotes. I haven't seen that bug but I've developed enough apps to know things slip through. Please e-mail me the details at support@softraph.com. I'd also like to know how you want to attach address book entries.

Bottom line, proNotes helps me and many other users keep themselves organized and, just as importantly, helps them find things really fast. I can't tell you how many times I found a comment someone told me (that I jotted down) or an attachment (attachment names are searchable too) in about 3 keydowns. That's it's real power. You build up a category and title system as you go along, can change it at any time (I built in a mass change system in the edit menu) and you can find stuff quickly.

Again, I want to thank you for giving proNotes a chance and writing your thoughtful and balanced comments.

Nov 12 2007

ANON BUD  Well, I've tried this app again as my iCal is acting up and I really would like to have an integrated Contact Management/Calendar/Project application.

I would dearly love to love this app. I've found I can get over the non-synching with all my iCal calendars, but editing contact information is a nightmare. I lost several contacts simply by trying to change the category of the contact. And since this synchs with Address Book, those contacts were also removed from AB. Thank goodness that I make regular backups every few days.

Contactizer Pro is better than Soho Organizer and Daylite, IMHO. Now Up-to-Date/Contact is too old fashioned and the promised new version has been in the works for over a year. Entourage beats them all hands down (it really is quite excellent), but I just do not want to go back to that as I am trying to get away from using any Micro$oft products for good.

ANON BUD  It's been a while since taking a look at this app and I am very impressed with it, especially the ability to link various elements with contacts.

Two reasons, though, why I will not purchase this:

1) Does not sync with my different iCal calendars. It will only sync with iCal by creating a new Contactizer Calendar. This is not good for me as I rely on different calendars in my daily workflow. This is just a must have for me!

2) Does not render HTML in mail messages. With all the drawbacks of CRM4Mac, it at least renders HTML.

OBJECTIVE DECISION  Contactizer has a different paradigm:

There is only one calendar, but of course it can be organized to be split in several categories. We think it is much more convenient since an event can then be attached to more than one category (and appears as if it was in several calendars)!

As for HTML email, yes we don't render them since Mail does that its own way (not the standard way). Of course there is a button to open the email in Mail.

Still indicates that it is version 1.09 not 1.6.

No ability to make contacts that I can figure out.

No response from support helpdesk.

Since the developer likes to write in these MacUpdate pages, perhaps he’ll respond to this!

What gives? I would really like to tryout this app, but nothing has changed since the last time!

ANON BUD  Not quite sure what’s going on, but for the life of me I cannot get the app to work. I’ve read the documentation all the way through and have tried to get the app to copy and paste. Nothing. Just once I’ve been able to actually copy something, but I have been unable to paste anything. Oftentimes the app crashes when I try to perform some function.

If I’m doing something wrong, it is not self evident. I’m not that bright, but I think that if I can teach myself how to use InDesign in just a few hours, I should be able to learn this in just a few minutes!

I‘ll stick with CopyPaste. It’s an ugly app, but at least it works!

BTW- I’m using a 1 GHz Aluminum PB G4, 1 G RAM, running 10.4.8

ANON BUD  Updated like a charm through auto updater! In less than four minutes I was able to download and install and check to make sure all apps were working properly.

This update corrects the start time of events enter after March 21.

I’m just as unhappy as the next guy to have to be using ANY Micro$oft app, but I must say, it is an indispensable part of my workflow. I especially like that Entourage is an integrated contact management solution in one app.

Four stars for the app. Three for the price. Two for having to use MSanything. Even so, I can’t wait til Office 2008 comes out later this year....

ANON BUD  Not really an app for personal use as it doesn’t do anything that free Apple software doesn’t already do. There is no integration with Mail or iCal or Address Book.

This may be a geat app in it’s commercial collaboration mode, but it would still be nice to have it play nicely with Apple’s software.

But then again, this is a free app and if you do not need this kind of integration with other apps, go for it....It’s just not useful for me.

C. MENG  Hi there.

Yes, currently we don't provide any integration that is "System-Dependent", as CodeX Apps is designed to be compatible with both Mac & PC.

But, still we have some "integrations" with other apps, such as our Calendar feature supports importing/subscribing iCal files(which can be exported from iCal on Mac). And, our collaboration platform provides RSS access as well.

Once again, because what we emphasize on is the compatibility of PC & Mac, so we have to do some drawbacks.

Therefore, I hope you can understand.

Talking about things that it can do while softwares bundled with your shiny mac can not, is the management of your works.

Sure, you can create folders as you are doing right now, but if you handle more than one thing everyday, you'll find that working on tons of folders are not pleasant at all.

Different ways of organization of your folders have different advantages and drawbacks. As we manage your stuffs by "tags", you can actually get different views of your works at any time.

And, there are lots of advantages in our product, including the free edition. They definitely can help on your works in many ways.

If you have any ideas or thoughts, please feel free to contact us.

thanks

ANON BUD  This is my final two words on FoxTrot: Doesn’t work.

After some bugginess reported earlier and fixed, or so I thought. This latest version brings back the buginess. Indexing takes forever; updating the index takes forever; and then, it can’t even find what I am searching for. What Spotlight was able to find in less than five seconds...Foxtrot worked on for over ten minutes. I got tired of waiting and quit the app.

Now I’m going to trash it and consider that my money has just gone down the drain!

ANON BUD  I quit using this app a while back due to some strange behavior and thought I’d upgrade to this new version. What I’m getting now is completely unacceptable to me:

* Duplicates entries get added for no apparent reason

* Manual time and date entry is messed up and frustrating to accomplish

* iCal synch sometimes duplicates entries already logged

* iCal calendars in iBiz drop down menu get duplicated

* Inability to use custom templates for reports

I realize this is beta software (the 10th!) but these issues are simply quite unacceptable. I hope that the developers get these fixed, because the software has potential. For now I will use something else. I suggest others do likewise.

Admittedly, two days may not be such a long period of time, but when one is trying to demo an app, it would be nice to have some kind of response. we appreciate all the great feedback. in particular a special thanks to cian:

an interface and graphic designer from ireland for a great idea and now the latest feature in iclock of country flags for the floating clocks. a feature you can see only if you have an intel mac is in the application menu which now displays which open apps are running in rosetta. very handy.

to respond to the last user. we did have a problem with apple's installer that was out of our control and the easiest solution was to decide that future versions of iclock would only be for 10.4. programming is a very complex and one reason it can be challenging is that we don't control everything. if apple decides to change some rules, programs, the os, or the installs then it takes us awhile to react to it. but we do. mark is a great programmer and dedicates a lot of time to talking to users and adding features and improving the program.

apple and other developers are constantly improving their programs. to do it feedback is needed. you can reach us through our website and direct at info at scriptsoftware.com

suggestions, bugs and comments are always welcome. right now we are working to make everything perfect so if you notice any issue let us know.

This new version has been greatly anticipated by me and others in the DL community and I must say that I am sorely disappointed. A complete change of the GUI seems totally unnecessary to me. In addition several more keystrokes are needed to perform simple tasks, such as editing appointments and contacts. Perhaps these issues will be addressed as they come closer to the final version. But they'll have to radically change their GUI, as I find it to be less much less user friendly than the DL I've come to appreciate.
