ALEX B  It only gets better, but I really wish it had some mac-like icons. For god sake, find some replacements. It makes the app look so dated. I tried to make some myself for you, but they didn't come out well. I also think the Debts, Income, and Expenses tabs should be updated to match the Accounts, Transfers, and Reports tabs. The same thing can be accomplished in a much cleaner interface than what is there now.

ALEX B  Unfortunately, this app hasn't gotten much better since my last review.

Again, I really wanted to like this app, but it's just a pretty interface, with not a lot of features.

The developers are also responsive, but apathetic to your comments and suggestions. They have a certain way of doing business and that's how they are going to stick to it.

It sucks because this could be a really excellent app, but the type of e-mail replies to my suggestions left me with a "this is never going to happen" feeling that just can't be ignored.

I wasted my cash on this; don't follow suit and do the same.

I have averted my attention to other apps ad though they lack even QIF importing, they can forecast my debt and expenses more accurately than this program ever could.

It's a real shame though.

I hope this company claims bankruptcy. Maybe that will get them to change their operations and actually program more to the users taste than their own.

ALEX B  The developers did get back to me (I had to mail them again and again), but it seems they have been overloaded with e-mails and things outside of the internet. That said, they were very responsive and are working hard to get up to speed.

With that in mind, it just goes to show how many people use this app.

The devs are even working to offer it in both plugin and separate app form, so here's to hoping.

This new version, despite it's not as sweet plugin format, is still excellent. It works well and doesn't crash and it's the best of it's kind so it deserves a good rating.

ALEX B  The developer has squashed some bugs, the new version now comes in both plugin and separate app forms in one package, and Safari no longer crashes randomly.

Good stuff. Love the added functionality and it's worth the cash.

ALEX B  You can get this plugin working again by adding a few lines of text to the Info.plist file within the .bundle.

I got it working except there is one small bug. After using Red Snapper to save a page, the scroll bars disappear from the browser window. closing the browser window and reopening it solves the problem. No need to quit Safari, just close/reopen and its back.

I can live with that bug if it means I can still use Red Snapper.

You can find the lines to add as well as detailed instructions in the comments section of Saft on MacUpdate. This also happens to work with SafariDockStatus, but I failed to get it to work with FLVR. It'll look fine, but going to a page with a flash video will crash Safari, so FLVR 2.0 or whatever it's called now is needed, but I don't like external apps (like Saft 10). Sigh.

Also, where the hell are the developers?

ALEX B  The launcher idea is terrible. How is it supposed to work harmoniously with other plugins that use the same idea. Terrible.

It also has some bugs. My Downloads window won't let me clear it after I download one file. The window won't show any new downloads being downloaded, though they do download even though it's not visible.

The developer is in no where land. I don't know if he has some life thing going on, but multiple e-mails, bug e-mails and so on, go unacknowledged.

Once you upgrade to the Leopard version, you lose the ability to download the Tiger and Tiger for Safari 3 versions. Since I wanted to try to make the tiger version work through that file edit, I couldn't download a copy. Now I have to find an illegal copy (that technically isn't illegal for me since I purchased a license) to download it and use it again since who the heck knows where the dev is.

That said, it's the original Saft, just in external launcher form for Leopard. Can't live without it now, so I gotta make do.

Seems like this developer is following the same suite as the TastyApps developers who made FLVR and RedSnapper. What a shame. Terrible customer support on both parts.

I want more features and my requests go unanswered. I even offer up ways to make it happen not just "give me what I want" requests. Like why is the Debug menu option hidden in some hidden menu to enable a hidden menu? It makes no sense. Not only that, the debug menu turns off at the next restart so you have to go to the hidden menu to turn it back on? This should be a permanent on/off option within the Saft preference pane. Completely asinine.

ALEX B  I had this going good with other plugins like RedSnapper and SafariDockStatus, but Saft doesn't seem to work. When I add the plugin after editing it and load up Safari, Safari starts, but I have no browser window. Clicking New Tab or Window from the File menu seems to open one, but it's not visible and all the options to close windows or perform any task on a window is disabled as though there are no open windows, but when I quit, it says are you sure you want to quit with 5 open windows (as many times as I tried opening new windows). Sigh. I hate the launcher.

ALEX B  I've also had ttrouble contacting the developers. I suppose it's just focus on the next version of the product, or whatever e-mail system they might have had set up to auto reply about the products had hiccups unexpectadly.

The products weren't removed from their site for too long, so I'm not too bothered as a paying customer.

For the record, in the past, when they did respond, they were extremely friendly, courteous, and very quick to respond at that. At the time, one of the best dev's I've had the pleasure of dealing with so far. I would go so far as rating them excellent.

ALEX B  Best looking p2p app around. The interface updates and very nice, but that really is all that's changed since 1.X

Worth paying a new registration for from 1.X users who were nice enough to buy your app when it did something and supported you and not offer it to them now because you didn't offer lifetime upgrades then? I'm afraid not buddy.

UNfortunately, you're more likely to be hit by a train sitting at your desk on the top floor of a building, then you would be with this app.

You'll just end up buying a virtual paperweight.

Save your money and buy some other app instead.

The developer makes the best Torrent app for the mac around though. Buy that instead and you won't be sorry. Besides; Who uses P2P any more?

So.... why not add a kill dock command and then restart the dock? That fairly simple and can be executed without any user interaction. That way, the icon gets updated and ical doesn't have to start. It's also an almost instantaneous restart. It looks as though you turned on hide dock and then turn it off all within a seconds time.

Just like the HUNDREDS of poor fools that purchased Cha-Ching only to find it barely did what it said it would, I found myself in the same situation here.

It has a nice interface, but it is lacking features I would really like that other money apps have and the features it does have fail to work properly.

I wanted this app to do what Debtinator does with managing future expenses and the way data is entered, with the simplicity of Cha-Ching and the reports of iBank. As well as retaining its current interface. I wonder how long it would take to build such an app myself.

If you are a skilled developer and have unlimited time to devote to the project, figure on 1 to 2 years. If not a skilled developer, 3 years plus, and if not programming full-time it might be 4 years. Undoubtedly these time frames are too long for most to self-develop, but one-person development takes lots of time. I would suggest encouraging the developers with incentives instead of bludgeoning them in public. While I have little sympathy for unresponsive developers, I also believe developers want the financial reward that is often unreachable selling shareware at $39 USD.

Disclosure: I'm a Mac developer and a software engineer for over 35 years, but I am not affiliated with the "Money" software in any way.

ALEX B  Excellent! Very satisfying game. I can see myself coming back time and time again to get better at this and try to beat the top online score. It's not easy, but it's fun!

I love the internet play. More games, especially games like this, should have this!

My only qualm is the box buttons on the bottom of the window. Though the design text and black sihlouette designs are nice, the squarishnesh of the text buttons just don't seem right to me. Perhaps if they were rounded off on the edges or something. Or maybe it's that they are too small? You should take a look at Otis. That game has a simple interface design, but it works very well. I also wish the online text display wasn't so simplistic. It seems like it's missing something. You almost don't even know you can type in the text box. I also think the scroll bars in the text box and text dialog box should stay hidden until there is enough text to scroll through. Some interfaces changes and it will definitely be much better.

ALEX B  For what this does, it does it well, but paying $65.00 for this one trick pony is completely idiotic (unless you have money to burn or don't care).

The fact that it also comes in a subscription based service is even more absurd. To put these types of payment options on a program is greedy at best. I could see myself paying a $20 one time fee, period, with upgrades until the next major release, but I just can't get over these prices.

ALEX B  I just wanted to ammend my original review. I meant to set Ease of Use to 5, but set it to 3 by mistake since I set Features to 3.

I should add that I chose 5 for Ease of User because all you had to do was create an entry on each pane (you could probably even leave some out) in the program and the last two panes (Reports and Graphs) would show you the results. Couldn't be simpler. My other ratings are self explanatory. The main rating is the average of 4.5 rounded up since I couldn't choose 4.5 as a rating.

ALEX B  Is planning a budget that works to help you get out of debt your main concern? Then look no further because Debtinator does exactly that and no more.

I set up a budget for my brother and printed it out for him so he would know what to do and when.

I input an income, mortgage, monthy bills, taxes, credit cards and set an allotment for extra cash that would most likely get spent throughout the week amongst a handful of other items to take into account. It said that he would still be paying off his mortgage in 50 years and to go back and try to make some changes. I added that I only wanted to pay a maximum on certain bills of double the minimum payment as well as a few other changes and the results were astonishing. He could be financially secure, out of debt and have cash in his savings account by 2013! Almost 5 1/2 years and he could be living well planning for his future!

This seems to be the only program I found that can handle changes in interest rates at specific dates per account. It even tells you how much your monthly interest is.

I have tried iBank, Cha-Ching, Jumsoft Money and a couple others.

Though I don't like the interface much because of it's lack of mac appeal, it does everything it said it would and well.

I was able to get a good outlook on my future as well with this and it really makes you feel like you can accomplish it.

And $15 dollars? That is a VERY fair price. It seems like the developer really kept his user's in mind when he decided upon the price. If you can complain about spending $15 dollars to help set up a budget that can help you become financially stable, why hesitate? An accountant would do something very similar and charge much, much more (despite the fact that an accountant also helps you plan your retirement and so on). He was very generous when other programs of a similar nature cost more.

That said, this program helped me out immensely and was exactly what I needed. The developer is also very responsive and takes your ideas into consideration. I sent him like 10 e-mails and he got back to me on all of them! Best bang for your buck.

What Debtinator lacks is a interface and some features that other programs such as Cha-Ching and Jumsoft Money offer. But Debtinator is not a fully featured money management program and it makes no such claims, which is why it is at the TOP of it's class in this category.

I can't stress enough how excited I was to see the results of using this program.

JIM_T_3  Actually, maximum payments aren't required to keep you from going bankrupt, the program's smart enough to pay as much as it can, but never so much that it can't cover the future.

If you set a maximum payment of $500, but can actually affor $600 w/o going bankrupt, the app will still only send $500 and keep that extra $100 in the bank.

If you can only afford $400 in a month, it'll only send $400, regardless of the max.

I put in the maximum payments option for cases where you have a debt in the middle of a reporting option that you want to "skip over".

For instance, your mortgage may have the 3rd highest interest rate of your debts, but you don't want to overpay on it ever, figuring that your money is better invested elsewhere. So you can set a maximum payment on the mortgage and then it'll get skipped over when a report is determining who to overpay. That way, you can run any report you want and it won't be overpaid.

But to keep you from going bust? Maximum payments aren't necessary in that case.

ALEX B  I would have given this app a 4, but it's missing some features that make other opensource clients better.

Still, I use this over the other apps every day. Why? Because it's pretty, haha. It has some nice features already; could definitely use more.

I would like to see this app have selective file downloads from a torrent file. That would have knocked my rating from a 3 to a 4.

One issue I have with Xtorrent is that when a ne version is released, the current version stops fucntioning. You are presented with a dialog asking if you want to download the new version. If you say no, the app closes. Then if you update, the current torrents you had downloading are corrupt with the new version and you have to delete and reload all your torrents because with each new version, is usually a new handling of torrent downloads.

That said, this app runs fast for me. My torrents download faster on Xtorrent than any other torrent client. I can't attest to how or why.

As for other people who have commented on the developers "notorious" use of opensource code. Most opensource is free to be edited and SOLD as a different product as per the GPL license. You need to spruce up on your reading before commenting.

The developer, though he doesn't seem to always be available (he probably has a life outside his four apps), he always puts out nice products with good UI's and good functionality that you don't see in other apps, which is what makes OS X so attractive to begin with.
