AGATHEZOL  If you answer an option in the poll that has a blank in it please fill in the blank by e-mailing me or posting here with your idea/request. Development is user driven. Your input dictates my development.

AGATHEZOL  After looking at the poll results and answering some e-mail super-user kill will be available in the next release. Thanks to all who discussed it with me.

For those who didn't understand the poll, WhatsOpen currently will not kill a process as the super user. This means you cannot kill anything your user is not the owner of. In the next release this behavior will be changed so if you kill an application when super user mode is enabled it will kill the application as the super user.

AGATHEZOL  Hi! I like your apps interface design. I write the WhatsOpen app and was wondering if you'd be interested in collaborating efforts? The simplistic interface you've used is a wonderful way of presenting a summary of devices. I'd be interested in using it to frontend WhatsOpen as a more straight forward way of displaying information while continuing to use the more expanded view for further system information.

You can contact me at agathezol@agasupport.com.

Thank you,

Aga

AGATHEZOL  Ok, I've found how to obtain the CPU statistic information on processes. This requires root level access to the system, but that isn't a problem since that level of access is already granted if you enable full file listings. I will work this into a new release in the near future.

AGATHEZOL  Thanks for the kind words. I've been digging through the sysctl() function set to try and figure out how to grab the per-program cpu utilization. Not having a lot of luck figuring out out as most of the values I look at turn out 0 even though there clearly is usage on the test programs...

Anyone out there know what MIB queries / response fields I'd find this type of data in while using a sysctl() call?

AGATHEZOL  That might be good. After looking at the amount of code change required to make WhatsOpen work on 10.4 I've decided not to undertake it. WhatsKeepingMe works on 10.4 and facilitates the core functionality I'm using for WhatsOpen for those who want something now.

AGATHEZOL  What do you mean by "dropping files from finder"? Are you attempting to drop a file from the finder and see what has it open? That is a feature I never considered...

AGATHEZOL  I appreciate the comments, thank you. I should make it known that AGAControls was one of my training programs to learn Cocoa. So, in many respects I was reinventing the wheel with the purpose of learning Cocoa. Secrets looks interesting, perhaps I will work on it at some point.

AGATHEZOL  A 10.4 compatible version will require a rewrite of a fair amount of code. I can do this if there are enough 10.4 users out there who want the tool. I will add a poll to see how many people want to see a 10.4 backport.

AGATHEZOL  You are listing one of the exact reasons I wrote this utility. I would run into this when using external media devices, or in many cases an sshfs mounted file system. Quite irritating!

AGATHEZOL  Thanks for your comments. The reason it isn't listing all open files is that your user doesn't have access to that information. I will add a change in (as an optional preference) that will allow you to use all open files. This will require typing an administrative password to complete however.

An open in finder option is pretty interesting. Of course, the files are already open, and in most cases are hidden files, or libraries you don't want to actually open in an editor. But opening their finder directory would be useful in some cases. I can add that in.

AGATHEZOL  The double file listings that some people are reporting are the results of misreading the output. Each application has a list of files that it has open, some applications share files, especially library files. So these files will show up more than one time. The application will show up more than once because each application has many files open and there is one file per line.

I will add file sizes to the display. It shouldn't be terribly hard, I just didn't realize people would want it.

The search routines need work. Right now all it is doing is filtering the output and rerunning the listing. It should instead be storing a full listing of open files and then filtering that list for display (much faster).

Thanks for your comments!
