A. B. CARRACHO  Tonyboy --

Pardon me, please, if I misunderstood you and you are already aware of this.

There is a command-line utility testing and reporting tool for multicast DNS in the current builds of both Tiger and Leopard. Called 'dns-sd' (with sd as shorthand for Service Discovery) it's a replacement for the less-informative mDNS command. dns-sd is meant for interactive service discovery, not for scripting (its API's, however, are listed in /usr/include/dns_sd.h.)

Obviously, 'man dns-sd' will explain it far better than I.

SOHO Labels
Apr 23 2009

A. B. CARRACHO  Oh, great.

Just because I replied to your comment without taking the time to first ask you about the underlying detail, I get modded down a point.

How dare you make a fool of me by pointing out the truth! Only my wife and kids are supposed to do that.

Also, now that I read it again, I perceive a hint of snarkiness -- and a lot of know-it-all -- in my words. I apologize for that.

You could have been righteously indignant in your reply, yet you weren't. I thank you for that as well.

SOHO Labels
Dec 25 2008

A. B. CARRACHO  Unless I fail to understand your premise, I believe you have misinterpreted the December 10, 2008 announcement from Soho Labels 4.0. Could it be that you inadvertently combined the software's new ability to print a varied range of Facing Identification Marks mentioned under the "What's New" heading with the phrase "Supports 15 barcode formats" in the opening paragraph, resutingin belief that the software was only just now capable of supporting U.S. Postal POSTNET printing? In any event, visitors to this page should be aware that from the very beginning, which was Version 1 of Labels & Envelopes, Chronos's SOHO products have been capable of printing POSTNET barcodes. (Not to mention PLANET, U.K. Royal Mail, Japan Post, UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN13, EAN8, Industrial 2 of 5, Interleaved 2 of 5, Modified Plessey, Code 39, Code 39 Extended, Code 128, and Codabar barcodes.) No, i don't work for them.

A. B. CARRACHO  If you're running system 10.3.8 or later -- perhaps an even earlier system version, I can't say -- there's no need for Belkin's software. Apple has (very quietly) added universal UPS support into OS X. The only hardware requirement on the part of the UPS is that it can communicate via USB.

Here's the procedure: Attach the USB cable between the UPS and the Macintosh. Go to the Energy Saver preference pane, and configure a few new menu settings. That's it. No restart or logout required.

I found this hint at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040203154052326

extractor URL
Nov 12 2004
*½...

AMBROSE  Extractor URL is not at all the worst piece of software in the list of all the programs I have ever used. Second worst, possibly. The worst caused a kernel panic, and at least this is stable. Nevertheless, it didn't do anything useful and easily ranks in the bottom five of my list in terms of pointless frustration.

I thought Extractor URL sounded like a handy way for my GUI oriented clients to extract URLs from email and text files without needing to learn about regexps and the command line.

It's still a useful concept. This product doesn't provide it.

I'm so used to reading comments at MacUpdate and VersionTracker stating "This app is trash," and "This program sucks," that I tend to ignore single incidents as meaningless griping from clueless users.

Anonymous, I apologize for putting you in that category. Let me make it up to you by reiterating your very good advice: Don't waste your time or your bandwidth on this turkey.
