/USR/BIN/PAUL  Are you kidding me? An ".sit" file! No one uses Stuffit anymore. Please convert this to a ".dmg" or ".zip", so all of us don't have to download a separate application just to uncompress it!

/USR/BIN/PAUL  THANK YOU! Thank you for supporting us PPC users. I couldn't use Prism because it's Intel only and the newest Safari with Snow Leopard is also Intel only. I wanted Fluid for my Google Reader account, as it seems there are not many good Google Reader clients out there. This app is very snappy/quick and I love all the extra features. Really feels like an app on my desktop. Thanks again.

/USR/BIN/PAUL  RapidFlickr really is a great piece of software. I only wish it created a thumbnail album of all my albums, kinda like how iPhoto has events for groups of photos!

/USR/BIN/PAUL  Thank you very very very much for this wonderful little app. Under Leopard however, there are several shortcuts my 18 mo old found quickly, like Spaces and enabling certain universal access items, but the fix was simple, just disable all the items under "Keyboard Shortcuts" in "Keyboard & Mouse" and disable "Spaces" and viola! Thank you again.

DBONSER  My 13 month found a way to exit it as well: ctrl-esc. I'm not sure what this is a shortcut for but it exits AlphaBaby every time.

Otherwise, she LOVES this program. She even likes to use the mouse and draw trails of stars all over the screen.

Thanks for a great program!

/USR/BIN/PAUL  I've been using RapidBlog for over six months now. For the most part, this software is top notch! The developer is awesome at answering questions and really listening to his customers. I had requested a certain feature and version 1.50b9 has it built-in! It just keeps getting better with each release and everytime Blogger makes changes, this developer is right on patching it.

/USR/BIN/PAUL  Even though the update is from 3.5 to 3.6, this is a monumental update. For one, everything is organized much much better! Second, the speed is very noticeably better! And third and my favorite is the Theme variations. I was very glad to pay my 25 bucks for an upgrade. It's worth the upgrade price and is to support great developers! Awesome job, keep it up.

/USR/BIN/PAUL  Awesome update! It seems much more snappier. I still prefer this over the others, however it would seem that the others (Remote Buddy and Sofa Control) are providing more substantial updates, more often. I hope we can see some of the same features implemented soon.

All in all, mira is still the best application out there for what it does (in my honest opinion).

/USR/BIN/PAUL  I'm a registered user of Sandvox. I must say that I probably wouldn't have payed for this now that I have used it for some time now, only because of how un-stable it is. I must say that for now it seems to be a little better with 1.0.4. But please don't get me wrong, I really do love this app when it behaves correctly. So I hope these small and frequent updates will make this app solid. And now with iWeb 2.0 on the horizon, Karelia Software once again must prove themselves better then Apple. Please, oh please?

Mira
Jul 26 2006
****½

/USR/BIN/PAUL  I have extensively used mira, Sofa Control, Remote Buddy and I must say that mira is one of the most intelligently crafted of them all.

I like mira the most over the others because:

1) Simple and Elegant design. Everything from novice users to power users will love how easy to use this application is.

2) Power and Flexibility. mira has just the right blend of features that gives you almost all the functionality anyone could want.

Here's what I DO NOT like OR wish to have in mira:

1) mira is automatically disabled when the mira preference pane is open, which makes it difficult for testing your remote. You have to close and re-open as your testing. But not too bad, once everything is configured the way you want.

2) Both Remote Buddy and Sofa Control have built-in file browsers for navigating your home directory and opening files/documents along with file info and previewing.

3) Remote Buddy has a great feature that I would like to see in mira. When your controlling an application with your remote, you can pull up a menu reminding your what each button on the remote does for the current application. This is helpful because every application behaves differently and this way you won't have remember what the buttons do while your in a certain application. This would be an awesome addition to mira's feature set.

4) I would like to be able to create my own customized multi-fuction buttons, in addition to the pre-determined ones already built-into mira.

Other than that I would recommend all these wonderful apps: Sofa Control, Remote Buddy and mira. But... I would HIGHLY recommend mira and prefer it over the others (for now at least).

mira is my choice!

Remote Buddy

/USR/BIN/PAUL  Wow, Preview 4 brings lots of features to the table! I have changed my opinion since my last review (Shown Below). I very much like what has been changed in this software in respects to it's power and flexibility. However it does have some short-comings in my opinion:

1) If you're in an app, like let's say iTunes that you are controlling with the remote, when you bring up the menu, there should always be some default command for every app, such as "Quit" "Minimize" or "Hide". To do this now, you have to navigate all the way to the root of the menu and select "System" and then the app name and then Quit.

2) Simplicity. I know this is always hard to bring simplicity and power/flexibility together in one app, but take a look at "mira" and there you'll see an app that has the same function as Remote Buddy, but is very simple and easy to use, yet powerful.

3) I looked everywhere for changing a "Global" or "Default" keys of my remote and couldn't find this feature. Both Sofa Control and mira have the ability to change global keys when your currently in no application. If Remote Buddy had this feature, it would be a huge step in the right direction.

I had originally purchased Sofa Control, but now with the release of mira, I have purchased that software as well. I was pretty close to purchasing Remote Buddy, but the 3 items I mentioned above prevented me from buying. This doesn't mean I won't buy it in the future or that it isn't a great app.

What I like about Remote Buddy:

1) I like that every app has it's own menu, so the user doesn't have to remember what each key does for a particular app.

2) I like the integrated file browser with file and preview information.

3) Great looking interface when using it with the remote.

That is my 2 bits!

Remote Buddy
Jul 26 2006

FELIX SCHWARZ  Hello Paul,

thanks for your feedback.

1) Expect to see some nice new features addressing this in the next preview (preview 6) or in preview 7.

2) Animated by your post, I took a look at mira. It has a polished outside, but (and that's in response to your post, I wouldn't otherwise post it here) it is not even close to having the features of Remote Buddy or even those of its other competition. A few things to try out to see the difference yourself (with any of the products): try to choose and load a file with it, try to share and localize a behaviour you created - or even just to back it up and use it on your other computer without having to create it from scratch, try choosing a recording or TV station via a menu in EyeTV, try to send keyboard sequences, try debugging AppleScript with it, try to write an application that gets low-level & realtime access to the Remote through it, try to make it send mouse wheel events, try to get 50 applications organized in its one-level menu and not swear when you have to scroll around, try to make it perform multiple actions on one press, .. although there'd still much more to try, I think I can stop now ;-) ..

3) You're the first to ask for this :-) .. but you're heard and I think it's a good idea. Plus it's really easy to implement. Expect to see it in preview 6. :-)

Again, thanks for your feedback!

Best regards,

Felix Schwarz

Remote Buddy
Jun 28 2006
****.

/USR/BIN/PAUL  I've tried both Sofa Control and Remote Buddy, and they both have their advantages. Sofa Control is very flexible, but slow, the interface needs some polishing and only allows one remote. Remote Buddy is extremely fast, has a great looking interface, allows multiple remotes, but lacks very much in functionality. Just as a quick comparison, when you want to quit an application:

In Sofa control, you just select menu and then quit. Very easy and intuitive.

In Remote Buddy you have to navigate way back to the root of the menus, select System, then select the app you wish to quit, then select quit. Very tedious.

In Contrast with another comparison:

Remote Buddy allows you take control of the system allowing you to sleep or shut down.

Sofa Control does not have this built-in, however Sofa Control is so flexible because of it's marriage with Apple Script that this could very easily be configured.

All in all, I wish these developers could work together OR at least copy some of the ideas from one another to make their app better. Thanks to both developers for creating such useful apps.

If I had to choose to use only one of these apps, it would probably be Sofa Control because of it's power of flexibility.

Remote Buddy
Jul 3 2006

FELIX SCHWARZ  Hello Paul,

thanks for your review.

Two important additions, though:

1) You can add about ANY function you want to Remote Buddy using behaviours (an SDK is available on the website). This does include Applescript, but is not limited to it. In fact, behaviours are Cocoa bundles, so can call any function OS X has to offer to developers.

2) Remote Buddy can help you quit ANY running application - it's a generalized concept and not just limited to a short list of apps. Regarding available menu items and the organization of the menu: Remote Buddy is currently still a preview version. Expect improvements :-)

That said, preview 4 will bring another set of major enhancements on both points (behaviours & also usability).

Best regards,

Felix Schwarz

/USR/BIN/PAUL  Thanks for the reply. Didn't know about the SDK and great to know, except I'm not a programmer and know nothing about SDK, but I do know some Apple Script and a ton of shell scripting.

Also, great to hear updates are on the way! Can't wait to try them out and would love to buy your product.

EXEC  i checked for the same, and was directly told that there will be NO "upgrade" price.

according to Roxio sales, it's a new purchase -- at full price -- because of "all the new features, and Popcorn integration"

hence, for me, the $39 MacMall offer was my 'upgrade' ...

WakeOnLan

/USR/BIN/PAUL  It would be nice if they bundled a command line version of this, like WakeOnLan command line. The only problem with WakeOnLan command line, is there's no GUI. So it would be cool if 1 app did it all, but for now I have WakeOnLan AND WakeOnLan command line.

WakeOnLan command line

/USR/BIN/PAUL  Finally! I have been waiting for a command line version of WakeOnLan forever! I have a lot of shell scripts that I've written for my personal use that could use this directly included in my scripts, instead of having to use AppleScript to script a GUI app like the original GUI WakeOnLan for Mac. Now I can wake my G5 from my Mac mini server to sync them. Simply awesome. Thank you so much!
