LARRYMCJ  Operator error...my mistake in a configuration setting. It does exactly what it's supposed to. Back to five stars :-)

LARRYMCJ  Sometimes more is not necessarily better. I own SuperDuper! and was trying out the latest version of ChronoSync but all I really wanted to do was a simple synchronization of my primary data folders (Documents, Desktop, Music, and Pictures) to a backup drive a couple of times a day.

SuperDuper just won't let you do it...and when I contacted support, though knowledgeable and friendly, he kept telling me that I should do a clone of the entire drive. I don't want to do that...I want to do what "I" want! A daily clone over USB takes forever and I just don't need it...the only data I need is in these four folders.

ChronoSync is very complex and somewhat tricky to configure, but a very nice program. Unfortunately, it will not let you do what I wanted by just selecting source and target folders...you have to include the entire home folder and then exclude what you don't want...and of course it copies all the hidden files to the target drive as well. Again...all I wanted was the data.

Anyway, I tried File Synchronization 1.4.4 and it's exactly what I need. It's very fast at synching once you make the initial copy and it's simple and easy to use...not to mention that it costs about 2-3 times less than the other two backup programs I mentioned.

It would be perfect if it had a more useful scheduler. Currently, you can have it automatically synchronize at any number of minutes, hours, or days, but you can't configure it to run at a specific time on a specific day of the week, or month, etc. In my case I'd like to to run every four hours between the hours of 8AM and 8PM...can't do it. But I'm sure the developer will be improving on the scheduler...in fact, maybe he'll pop in here and comment :-) Great app!!

LARRYMCJ  Well...I have to take back some of my comments but I don't see how to take away some stars. I just tried deleting a simple URL on my desktop and when File Synchronization ran it never even noticed I had deleted the file, keeping it on my destination drive. Oh, well...back to the search for a decent backup and synchronization app.

NEMESYS  You can create a recurring event in iCal and set it to launch File Synchronization. If you set File Synchronization for automatic synchronization, it will synchronize/backup your selected pairs of folders and can even quit after the sync is done.

LARRYMCJ  To Nemesys...you must have missed the comment I placed there about ten minutes after my original post. It was my error.

TCSDOC  I was looking at Chronosync and came across File Synchronization at MacUpdate. The $9.95 looked real good against $39.95 for Chronosync. After comparing the two programs, File Synchronization got my money. The developer answered my numerous emails promptly. My only wish list for this program is a built-in scheduler for daily timed syncs. The developer told me this was in the works for a future major release and his suggestion of using iCal as a temporary work-around works great.

I'm always glad to see this level of support and will always support those that support me.

JAYCE  I've used this splendid app for long enough that I don't remember when I first got it. No traumas, no problems, no having to look at Help yet again. It's easy to use, doesn't require babysitting, seems to have made no errors of inclusion or exclusion, and has over the months and (I think) years become so much a part of my routine that I no longer think about it. (I've bought copies for every Mac I ever use anywhere. No one has ever whined to me about having it.)

PAT320  Yes, great application and great support.

The only cons are the icons.

I've replace them with some Jonas Rak's toolbar icons.

That's make FS 1.4.3 beautiful.

The cow soundfile from the "about" window is also ugly. ;-)

NEMESYS  CallMePat,

The sound of the cow is actually the DogCow, a legendary figure at Apple's Developer Technical Support. There was even a tech note about it. Clarus was his name. I just thought it would be funny to put it there but, as you found out, it's not really a cow. It's a dogcow ;-)

EBURGIAN  Great program! Great user support!

I've used this program since 2004 and recently ran into some problems after updating to Leopard and a new flashdrive for backups.

The developer was able to quickly solve one of my issues and was very patient in helping me solve the other.

GCOGHILL  I just registered this after demoing it along with every other sync app I could find.

While perhpas not for a power user, I found it to be perfect for my needs (synching work files between desktop & laptop). Just enough features to have the control you want, but not so many that you are overwhelmed by all the options, requiring a study session of the user manual.

I like how all the sync sessions are in one window (I don't need to sync very many folders) and the clear result window when doing a pre-sync scan.

Responsive developer as well. I've already requested Growl support and Dock status badges, which I believe are on the way. Hope to see them in the next release.

Can't beat the price either.

SAPPOROBABY  This application is simply the best I have used. I use it to maintain my two iTunes library, and I could not be happier. It can read what is new, what is old and give me the option to backup or ignore. Two words: Buy this.

NEMESYS  Again, posting problems on a public bulletin board won't do you any good, unless you have some hidden agenda of dragging some products down. I personally respond to all emails and try very hard to fix them to the customer's satisfaction. I have never heard about any resource forks being lost. If you really want to be constructive, send me an email with your exact configuration and I can look at the problem.

J. MOYLE  This program is what a good utility program should be: simple to use, does what it claims, works like it should. At the price, this product would be hard to beat.

MIKE BARTLETT  The developer was not responsible for the paying problem - so no reason to blame him - it´s a Kagi problem

S. HOVDE  I had to sort through hundreds of thounsands of files to find out which ones OS X had failed to copy due to some problem with being "unreadable". I yearned for a port of PowerMerge. I tried ExecutiveSync but it wasn't clear to me that one could just scan for the missing files. I didn't want to actually synch; I just wanted to find the problem files. FileSynchronization 1.0.1 works beautifully. The UI is really slick and the software works exactly as I hoped it would. I found all the "problem" files and paid for the software the same day. I hope the author will write more of these high quality utilities.
