ALBABE Just a Heads-Up here. This is in regards to Leopard Cache Cleaner, not Snow Leopard Cache. I've found that if I start this application and then do a Command H to hide the application while I work on something else... this ap stalls. It looks like it's working - the little sideways Barber Pole does what it does, but the ap just sits there... for hours. I've tried this in 10.4.11 and 10.5.8 and the same thing happens. MACTECHHEAD I used to like this tool and some of it's unique features. But as of this current version of 4.0.27 the developer has made a fatal flaw, you cannot use LCC when your logged in as the System Administrator because it keeps saying "Your not allowed to use this on the root account" I use 99% of my tools logged in as the System Admin so I don't have to be annoyed 50 million times for an admin password. MACMAN8 I would like to thank the developers for maintaining backward compatibility with Tiger in this application. Many developers have abandoned those of us who remained with the Tiger system instead of moving on with Leopard. It is nice to know that the developers of Leopard Cache Cleaner care about us too, and should I make the move to Snow Leopard when it arrives, I trust that i will be able to count on Leopard Cache Cleaner in the future. Thanks again. (Version 4.0.25)

ALBABE I have certain problems with this client... but I haven't really used any others to compare. I use it on a regular basis, but sometimes it seems insanely slow. I started it up to: Clean System Log Archives. On a 300 GB HD after Four hours it was still hanging in the last 2% of the Permissions mode. I quit it and started it again. Same thing. I ran the Apple Disc Utility for Permissions, which took around ten minutes... and then I tried LCC again. This time it took less than an hour and finally finished. MacGurl is right about the password. It takes quite a while after you type it in. I also tried to use the ClamAV Antivirus on my 300 GB drive and after 12 hours it still wasn't finished. I tried it again the next evening... same outcome. I don't find the Developer very accessible. He very rarely returns any emails to answer questions. I thought I had a good suggestion for him to have an Update mode in a pulldown... no answer. (Version 4.0.22)

MACGURL Once again this new version (4.0.22) bounced in the dock upon first start, would not force quit, and required a hard shutdown. I started up my Mac again and wanted to throw LCC away. Ah, but first one must launch it to deinstall its innards. This time LCC started up so I decided to accept the first crash as an anomaly and try some functions before I uninstalled. Acceptance of password is (always) followed by a 2 second wait. Why? The "Clean Finder" function stalled the app again, so I had to force quit through the finder (this time it worked), then restart the app, uninstall ClamX engine and uninstall LCC, and then trash, restart, and fix things with Onyx. It should be noted that "uninstall LCC" does NOT fully uninstall LCC, as the package receipt and .plist file were left behind. It should also be noted that 3 dots after a menu item (in most Mac apps) indicate a new window or menu of choices. Not so with LCC, as it goes right into the task without missing a beat. And why does the app's GUI seem dated? I know nothing about coding languages like RealBasic and Cocoa, but it doesn't fit with Leopard's own interface. And this is admittedly a minor point. But jerky barber-poles aren't reassuring, and there is NO progress bar at all on the "Clean Finder" function. It cleans the .DS_store files alright, but when is it done? I suppose one is reduced to guesswork. I sent an email to jlowrey@northernSW.com and it bounced back to me as "undeliverable: address does not exist." I don't think LCC is right for me until it gets an overhaul. It may work great for others. (Version 4.0.22)

COLOSSUS9 I used this app several times and it keeps damaging my ACLs on the start-up drive first, then the rest of the drives become effected. Including internal and external drives and made my machine incapable to boot from any drive attached to this machine. Basically, every drive had a lock on it and all ACL rights defaulted to "custom" instead of "read-write", "read" or "drop box". This only happened when I have installed this app, and I installed it 4 times. I had several techs look into this and we saw the damage to the ACLs happen simultaneously. We noticed it is when this app is installed. Even after we repaired my MacPro. We decided that this program is dangerous. Caveat Emptor. (Version 4.0.21)

HELIOS9 When you select ClamX(in LCC) to virus scan your download folder the scan says "scanning internet system plugins folder", "checking widgets for viruses" and "checking desktop for viruses" but there's no indication that one's download folder is being scanned, so I guess download folder isn't, in fact, being scanned. Same issue in the previous version of LCC. No big deal, though; I've installed ClamX app itself and use that for my scanning needs. It will scan the download folder without issue. Other than that, LCC is really fine. (Version 4.0.17)

MACMAN8 Yes, I too love this application, but would like MacUpdate to correct one thing. If you read the entire information on LCC, it states, "while still maintaining backwards compatibility down to OS X 10.3." On MacUpdate, it states that OS 10.5 is required. Shouldn't this be changed to correctly reflect that users of Tiger (I use 10.4.11) or Panther, can still use LCC? I appreciate the developer making this program available to those of us who have not upgraded to Leopard, for various reasons. Again, thanks for a fine utility. (Version 4.0.17)

MACGURL I love this app. Some things are not right yet, though. Considering the fast and furious pace of OSX updates, this is understandable. To the point: I ran usual cron scripts; then I ran Update LS Database. Bad idea. Process ran, finder quit, would not restart. No finder. So I did a manual power shutdown because you can't force quit anything without a finder (at least I don't know how) and I did reboot finally after 5 very nervous minutes. Prefs are messed up, and everything is slow to launch, but no loss of data as far as I can tell. I don't know if this will happen to someone else. But, for now, I can't personally rate the app. I'll wait a while. I CAN say this- the Alaska nights in winter must be a bummer - the interface is a bit depressing. Please use progress bars instead of barber poles... or, like MainMenu or TinkerTool System, open a log window so the user can see what's being done. A lot of us terminal geeks (and I use the word terminal in both senses) just stare at our screens while these apps run. I can also say that I think I spend entirely too much time worrying about maintenance apps! Carry on! Excalibur! (Version 4.0.12)

MACGURL I have a question. I like LCC and the new version seems OK so far. I'll give my rating when I have tried out all the functions on 10.5.4. The makers of LCC seem right on top of the update game, and they are obviously doing a pretty good job of it. To the point: Under the "MAINTAIN" menu, there's a new (?) option called "Repair Home Folder ACL". Wow am I scared of ACL's! When I used OSX's Disk Utility to repair permissions after the install of 10.5.4, I noticed there was a new ACL, on my application folder. I tried all my apps and everything seems to work so far. So my question is two-fold: a) Should I worry about the ACL on my Apps folder, and b) should I run the "Repair Home Folder ACL" ? Thanks to anyone who can answer this. (Version 4.0.12)

BEBDABHRHBRWEFG 3R§5Y5H4WTEDSFB useful app, with a lot of functionality. but it would be vastly improved with the addition of proper progress bars. at present, every task just uses the striped 'barber's pole' progress bars, which give no indication of how log a task is likely to take. since the tasks LCC performs are the kind of low-level system stuff the average user has little or no direct experience of, this makes using LCC a very vague experience. i start a task running and sit looking at the 'barber's pole' with no indication as to whether it's going to finish in 10 seconds, 10 minutes... or 10 hours. I have a 2.16 Ghz MacBook with 2GB of Ram. I was very disappointed as after I chose Optimize System - Optimize Files, I had at least eight applications completed deleted including Mail, Quicktime 7.3, TextEdit and several other applications, three which were in the dock and changed to the application icon with the black question mark. The common symptom I observed that may be helpful to the developers were all eight of the applications, and also files associated with the "Recent" use, were the files/applications deleted. MACGURL It doesn't seem to me that "repair permissions" is working in 4.0.2. It hung for 45 minutes, barber pole spinning all the while. I know I should never do this, but I force-quit LCC in the middle of the hang. I repaired permissions in Apple's Disk Utility and, fortunately, permission repair was fine and took about 3 or 4 minutes. I used Clix too -I'm scared of Clix, and the guy that compiled it scares me too- but it seemed to help, and everything is fine again. I'm on Leopard, 10.5.1. My Mac is a G5 dual 2 GHz w/ 1.5 GB of DDR SDRAM. I like LLC because of the added features but would like to see the app give more info to the user, like MainMenu (did) and Onyx does. MACSOLU Fails to work on items that require a system password (which is necessary for most of the commands offered in this program.) Probably crapping out because I chose to have NO password at all when I installed Leopard -- yes, this is a choice during install; it's just in a "hidden" screen. ORION MK. V Not the most intuitive app, but it's features -- once you explore them -- are a lifesaver. There are a ton of great free/shareware tools out there that do some of the same things, but a $10 TCC is a steal as a swiss army maintenance and troubleshooting tool. (Version 3.2)

GODS_CLOWN The developer added TTC to the menubar which MainMenu already had for long. I have nothing against TTC, but MainMenu is my favorite. MainMenu even won me over Onyx which I used before. A simple and complete solution, if it was not for the optimizing broadband feature that you can easily tweak yourself. Paying for TTC seems a fair thing to do to reward the developer for his work, but with so many good free utilities out there... well, you use those instead! (Version 3.1.4)

CUTTINTHRUIT Okay folks. You just need to know the truth. There's no need to wait for updates to programs like this that take adavantage of the average user's lack of knowledge. And certainly no need to pay for it. Onyx/MainMenu, etc. performs most of these functions for FREE. CLIX lets you actually see what you're telling the computer to do and actually have access to more functions....for FREE. No need to rely on this developer to catch up with the OS. Reliable, more powerful software is already out there. For FREEEEEEEEEEE. (Version 3.1.3)

ALAROB Although the website at Northern Softworks hasn't been updated to say so, this release _does_ work with OS 10.4.5. (I guess the guy who does the web page is still out icefishing and will be back with the spring thaw.) It's a nice little app that does many things; I just wish it didn't break with each incremental OSX upgrade. (That's why I rate it below average on stability.) Seems like it could be programmed to anticipate upgrades and not simply quit working. I have asked for this feature. (Version 3.1)

MAC5 I totally agree with the previous comment regarding this app. I too paid my money, only to be left high and dry when Apple released its OS update. No consideration having been a previous paid up user. I wil not be using this app again at any time in the future. There are lots of other choices out there, and they all do a very similiar job. Many of them cost you nothing, just your download time. MainMenu is excellent - and free. (Version 3.0.7)

ANONYMOUS Save your money: there are many freeware utilities such as MainMenu which do the same jobs (but with fewer bugs, greater ease of use, and better support) than this rip-off. I paid my full fee and got left without working software. Every time a new major MacOS version comes out, the author of this software drops support for previous versions and releases a new one for which he expects all this customers to pay a full fee for. I found this out after buying Panther Cache Cleaner (tcc's precursor) only to be left without software that didn't work. What happened was Apple released 10.4 before the 10.3.9 update came up. pcc support was dropped by the author: he supported Tiger Cache Cleaner only. Then Apple released the 10.3.9 update. This meant that pcc failed to work and existing pcc users were expected to pay a new full fee (not even a reduced price upgrade route) for tcc if they wanted to continue to use the functions they'd paid for. I asked the author of pcc/tcc about this, as a paying customer, and he ignored me. Tiger Cache Cleaner is a pure rip-off and the business tactics used by its author are probably illegal in the EU where I live. I found out that there are free applications that do everything that pcc/tcc can do. MainMenu in particular works much better than pcc/tcc, the author is friendly and fixes problems very quickly. For example, rebuild LS database didn't work properly in either pcc or MainMenu - only checked the boot volume in both cases. MainMenu's author fixed the problem quickly when I told him about it. The author of pcc/tcc - software *I had purchased* - ignored the problem when I, a paying customer, reported it to him. (Version 3.0.5)

ANONYMOUS Yeah MainMenu is OK but it currently (as of this writing) still does not work under 10.4.3. For whatever reason MainMenu's author for lack of support, at least TCC works under the current OS update. Heck, it's been out for over a month and no sign of a compatibility update for MainMenu. Even YASU, another favorite, has some tweaking to do for full 10.4.3 compatibility - and again no update appears in sight. (Version 3.0.5)

LEOOFBORG With all due respect, the reviewer is smoking crack. I paid for this when it was still called Jaguar Cache Cleaner, and didn't pay again until -Tiger- Cache Cleaner came out. Programmers have to eat, and if you can't afford 2 cups of Starbucks for your friendly neighborhood shareware author then you should learn the Terminal commands. Northern Softworks has done a good job of documenting what exactly they do with TCC, so you -could- just RTFM and use the Term commands. Or you could just be lazy and whine. I would -NEVER- run system tasks from the menubar. That's just asking for trouble. Basically I use Tiger Cache Cleaner and Applejack, and my machines are happy. (Version 3.0.6)

STILL TOPS TCC is always ahead of the curve. It is not free and shouldn't be as the Developer has placed a great deal of time into it. The "free" people here have no idea about what it takes to write software and I'd like them to work for me--for free. This version rocks and I have had zero issues with it. Also, I am surpriseed that folks are such babies about paying $9. Sure, its a nicer interface to things you can do manually. But since I make more than $9/hr and I am sure the author spent more than an hour writing it, your childish whining will only discourage good programmers from contributing to the growth of the single-digit marketshare of the Mac. ANONYMOUS I paid the full fee for Panther Cache Cleaner (PCC) - the precursor to Tiger Cache Cleaner (TCC). When TCC came out, the author dropped support for PCC. OS X 10.3 was then updated to 10.3.9. PCC does not run on 10.3.9. When I emailed the author about this problem, he completely ignored me - and I am a paying customer. There is no upgrade path for PCC licence payers to move to TCC: we are expected to pay a full new licence fee. This was his policy for the change from Jaguar Cache Cleaner to Panther Cache Cleaner too. MainMenu does most of what I need, and it's freeware. Both TCC and MainMenu get the rebuild LS database function wrong (all Mac utils I've tried fail to rebuild the LS database successfully). The following works on my Mac: /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user /Volumes/ (MainMenu might well be fixed soon - I've emailed what I know about the issue to its author) (Version 3.0.3)

Unless that function is in the open-source (Darwin) part of the OS, none of us outside Apple have much of a chance of determining just how securely the encryption is handled. ANONYMOUS Go Onyx, is free. I bought PCC and I don`t have a free upgrade for TCC. This is the developer answer: Tiger Cache Cleaner is not a free update, and will have to be registered to continue using it. PCC will remain actively supported, although there will not be further development on it as TCC is replacing it. You can easily redo the registration in PCC, or you can do it manually by renaming the TCC Preferences file back to PCC and deleting the TCC engine. You will need TCC if you are upgrading If you need to download PCC, you can find it here: (Version 3.0)

STICKMAN67 I've just heard back from the author of Tiger Cache Cleaner (TCC) about the problem whereby TCC seems to disable the previous incarnation of the software, Panther Cache Cleaner (PCC). If you've tried TCC but want to go back to using PCC, try the following: 1) Either delete the preference file TCC Preferences or rename it to PCC Preferences. 2) Delete the PCC Engine. I couldn't find a file by that name, or anything like it, but eventually realised that this could be done by launching TCC and disabling Automatic Operations via the Special menu. I assume if you don't have PCC/TCC doing any automatic stuff for you, then you won't have to worry about this step. 3) Re-enter your registration code the next time you run PCC after carrying out these steps. Theoretically PCC should work fine again. For some reason, though, after I had carried out these steps I still had to replace my existing copy of PCC with a fresh one for it to work, but that was a minor hiccup. PCC is now working as well as ever. I hope this helps. (Version 3.0)

STICKMAN67 I can live with the paid upgrade too, especially given this is quite inexpensive. But I am annoyed that TCC has "killed" PCC, for which I do have a valid, paid-for licence, and am waiting to hear back from the developer on that point. I'm still using 10.3.9 and will be for a while yet, and would like my copy of PCC to be functional again. (Version 3.0)

ANONYMOUS Original poster here again... My point is that my valid registration for Panther Cache Cleaner should not have been wiped out by trying Tiger Cache Cleaner. And l only tried it because I thought it was a free update. Because, at that time, there was not sufficient info to determine that it was not a free update. And, as I said before, I am not running Tiger, I am running 10.3.9 Oh, and the developer has not replied to my email yet. (Version 3.0)
| Apr 30 2005 |
STICKMAN67 I totally agree with the original poster on the point about TCC hosing PCC. Not very friendly, but I'm giving the developer the benefit of the doubt until I hear from him. (Version 3.0)

ANONYMOUS (give valid reasons to backup your claims) The description in this page is saying as follows: Version 2.4.8 is a maintenance release that improves the overall performance and stability of PCC. It adds limited support for Tiger. This release has been updated for OS X 10.3.9. ... But in my environment,Japan, the latest available OS update iss 10.3.8. Secondly, I have been thought that the previous icon of PCC/JCC is more attractive. Because it shows the corresponding animal in the OS X code name. Therefore, why not get back to the way from the upcoming brand-new OS X,Tiger. (Version 2.4.8)

ANONYMOUS I agree with the "version number" indication. (Version 2.4.7)
| Mar 22 2005 |
ANONYMOUS "Although you should include the version number of your software in the image or archive name, you should never include that version number in the name of the application itself. By keeping the application name constant across versions, users can upgrade by simply overwriting the previous version with a new version. If you include the version number in the name of the application, many Mac OS X features - such as double-clicking documents or launching via Login Items - may not work as expected after an upgrade, since Mac OS X often looks for applications by name (as opposed to Mac OS 9 creator codes). Put the version number where it belongs - in the version string inside the application - so that users can find it in the application's Get Info window." http://db.tidbits.com/getbits.acgi?tbart=07167 (Version 2.4.8)
| Mar 22 2005 |
ANONYMOUS Having the version number in the downloaded archive filename might occasionally reduce confusion, but if keeping it constant means download links will work right away when there are updates I think we're better off keeping things the way they are. I love this app. I delete the virtual memory swap files with it pretty often on a machine with fairly tight disc space. I use it when Menu Meters tells me I have much over a 64 meg swap file. HMMM use Apple's Disk Utility to repair your permissions and try using the app again, that is my best guess... that is, unless you know for sure that you did a custom install of OS X and did *not* install the BSD subsystem (which is otherwise installed by default), and if that does not work, use this to "rebuild your desktop". (Version 2.2.2)

CAM REVOL great app, works as advertised... highly recommended... used it on my iBook 600MHz and my trusty ol' beige (rev2) G3 550MHz (IBM, copper) minitower. OS X 10.2.1... zero issues. (Version 1.0)
