MACLOVER1.1 You may want to try Audio Hijack... I digitize all my Vinyls with it. Final Vinyl is easier to setup and get decent input quickly, but with a few filters Audio Hijack does a great job and is much more adaptable. (Version 2.5.1)

BUFFY THE COMPUTER SLAYER I have just started using this product. 'Pathetic' would be too kind a word for the supplied documentation, so having read the previous 79 reviews, I can offer my hints how to get the best out of this (actually not too bad) program. 1. Don't even think about connecting the iMic to a USB2 connector - mine only began to work when I linked to the keyboard's USB 1.1. 2. The preview button needs to be clicked to hear anything - that includes playback too. (They might as well delete the Play button altogether and replace it with the Preview button instead). 3. Don't bother with the main EQ (the button on main window) for adjusting the input when recording, it doesn't make much difference at all - use the one that slides out from the Edit drawer AFTER you have recorded a track. It's a much better EQ, though don't forget to 'Select' the entire track before you begin. 4. Uncheck 'Quick Save' in Preferences. You will then get a dialogue box when you save, you will have some control, and you will know where the hell your tracks are being saved. 5. When you have saved a track and you've located it in the Finder and played it back and it sounds ok, go back to FV and do a 'Flush' (File Menu). This clears out the FV cache / buffer ('scratch' data?), which may have been the problem for users who managed one side of an album then found the software wouldn't record anything else. 6. Don't bother trying to Edit (or anything) while the track is playing. They may say you can, but forget it. 'Stop' the track and then apply the edits (EQ, or whatever). 7. Thanks to the pathetic documentation, you may wonder when you come to record a new track and press the Record button "why isn't anything happening?". Select 'New' from the File menu, it's as simple as that. (So if it's that simple, Griffin, why was it so difficult to tell us, hey?) Thanks to the previous reviews I haven't bothered trying to use the Cue+ Cue- buttons - if I want different tracks I record each one separately. Otherwise I just record an entire album side, name it and leave it whole. There are probably audio editors that will split it better (anyone tried GarageBand with it?). I then convert the AIFF tracks from FV to AAC in iTunes (using Custom.. 256 as my ears are fussy), and I have to say, even after all that manipulation the results are WAAAY better than the muffled rubbish that is what you get from AllOfMP3. All in all I would say that Final Vinyl is quite a good product (especially as it's free), but I wish Griffin would do something about the sub-pathetic documentation, and give users a chance to get the best out of this product. BUFFY THE COMPUTER SLAYER Ok, I'm using version 1, but that's what was supplied with my iMic - did they sell me old stock??!! I've gone on using it for a few days now, and if I 'Purge' after EVERY recording, I get no problems like other people described. I would say, if you are having trouble after doing a good first recording, just Purge after each recording you do, then FV seems to cope. (Version 2.1 (FV245))

FAT TONY Final Vinyl is free software and Griffin is not going to put large amounts of money and time behind it. Griffins problem is that the poor quality of Final Vinyl is reflecting on the iMic itself, many people are unhappy that the software provided with their hardware just doesn't work. My copy worked for about 6 tapes then started with the odd behavior. Griffin Tech Support is decidedly unhelpful and that's not unexpected with freeware. I've experienced the problems with white noise, unexpected quits, and now Final Vinyl not booting at all through 3 versions. We're currently trying iMic with Garageband but if it works that's one more piece of software for the customer to buy if it didn't come with the computer. (Version 2.1 (FV245))

IMHOTEPP I have only great things to say about final vinyl. I went to my crates yesturday and found this to be an incredibly easy software. I am actually mad now because I did not have to by all the music from iTunes. I thought I would never get my music on disk and now have an huge library that many would love to have. All old school Hip Hop. I am a trick DJ (turntablist). I was the last DJ to go to CD. I;m retired now (wife, kid and full time job at the second largest toy company in the world) I only use CD for its ease of use. Now Big Daddy Kane, Craig G, Fat Boys, Boogie Down Productions and a ton of others are on my computer sitting in iTune. Thanks Griffin. Nuttin but love!! (Version 2.0)

EG Unfortunately this software doesnt work well. The Final Vinyl software came with my iMic. I kept getting Unexpectedly Quit dialog boxes. After reinstalling a fresh download from the Griffin website, I was able to get one complete recording (from tape) accomplished. I then came up with the same problem again. The Magnification (Cue + and -) did not work; therefore, I was not able to accurately remove portions of recorded files. Saving files would seem easy, but this was also very cumbersome. Accessing the saved files to then edit was just as awkward. I understand this is free software, and limitations are plainly outlined in the Tutorial, but my hope was that this basic program could achieve my basic transfer requirements. This was not the case. Fortunately, I had the time to try and make sense of it all. Some people dont have this luxury. As they say
nothing tried, nothing gained. (Version 1.1.2)

I had been trying to use Final Vinyl to digitize my LP collection for months without real satisfaction with the audio quality. Whenever I would get a song recorded and into iTunes, the playback just sounded really flat, quiet and muffled through my ipod when compared to music ripped from a CD. I went to Guitar Center and explained the problem and the guy was like "oh, you need a vinyl to line level preamp." I tried it out and things sound 100% better, comparable to that of the CD's. When using a preamp, DO NOT use the connected to turntable button in the EQ. Rather, use the Input slider control on the main panel to raise the level, I usually set it somewhere between 10 and 13, depending on the LP. If you play with the EQ, you'll see what i mean regarding sound quality. The preamp cost around $100 but it was well worth it, since i'm using it to transfer over 300 LPs. The phono preamp I bought is a BBE (brand) FJB 200X (model). And don't forget an extra pair of RCA cables! (Version 1.1.2)

PUNKARCHIVIST I bought the iMic yesterday nd installed Final Vinyl, and found the set up pretty easy, nd thought I was wel on my way. I digitized one side of a vinyl LP, edited it easily, saved in AIFF, and then loaded it in Audacity and converted to MP3, and moved the files to iTunes. Everything sounded great and I was really excited. Then I tried a second record. All of a sudden, it started giving me problems. It recorded, and when I played it back, all I got was a loud buzzing feedback noise. I tried rerecording, and managed to get 1 song ok. Then it started crashing on me whenever I tried to push the record button. Now today, it's crashed about 5 times, and I haven't been able to record anything. I'm doing my regular computer "housecleaning" tasks right now to see if that will improve performance, but I'm now starting to worry that I waste $35. It's more like a wasted $110 bucks though, as I also bought Tiger yesterday--and now I'm reading here that I can't install Tiger if I want to keep using this program. Grrrrr. I think I'm going to find a different audio program and go with Tiger, as I'm really not very impressed with Final Vinyl. (Version 1.1.2)

RUSS NICHOLS I have been trying to use Final Vinyl to record a voiceover demo, and it seems to be working ok except for one important thing: I am using a Sony dynamic mic, model FV 220, and the audio seems to be good EXCEPT I cant get a really robust level. The level is weak and anemic. The software that comes with iMic seems to produce a stronger aiff file than when I try recording directly into Sound Track. Still, I would like to produce a track that I would produce a nice strong audio level. So far, no luck. Maybe the mic needs a pre-amp, but Sonus says nothing about that in its online description. They say you can just plug in a mic and go. That has not been my experience. (Version 1.1.2)

ANONYMOUS I too am having problems with dropouts -- as long as 10 seconds -- and even scrambling of file segments -- in long recordings on Final Final 1.1.2. The problem occurs WHEN THE FILE IS SAVED TO DISK, not before. I am using a 1 GHz iMac G4 with 768 MB of memory and an 80 GB HD (original equipment, and I am running MacOS 10.3.9. I find it helps for a short time to optimize the HD with Symantec Speed Disk. (To do a complete optimization, it is necessary to boot from the install disk.) But this task has to be undertaken immediately before recording. I have not tested this procedure enough to know if it solves the problem reliably. The HD itself consistently checks out OK. TOLSTOY Come on Griffin, you gotta do better than this. It looks great but it's a mess to use. Trying to set 'in' and 'out' points for edits on the fly like that is a joke and one could do with a tighter zoom to deal with tracks that run into one another. It 'feels' kind of odd to use as well as you don't get much feedback for pushing all them buttons. Shame really, because I like the look of it. I know you've stated it isn't a 'real' editor but whats the point if you can't edit properly with it? (Version 1.1.2)

BONG Delighted that I can put a turntable (with a pre-amp) directly into the i-Mic and on the face of it, Final Vinyl seems to be the perfect simple editing solution, but when I identify a piece of crackle or silence to remove by placing cues at either end of it and then hit erase, the entire audio wave disappears from the screen and I lose the whole track. DAVID Bought an iMic so I could record some ancient tapes into iTunes and when I got it the CD had an old version of Final Vinyl which would not install on OSX for Mac. Was happy to hear that Final Vinyl 1.1.2 was to fix this problem but have discovered that it is useless because it will not allow for recording without very frustrating skipping and lagging recording. You can see the recording peak level indicators stopping and then trying to 'catch up'. The time indicator stops at this point and when it 'catches up' spins forward 'in time'. The problem is the recording is a duplication of the previous few seconds and what you get is a hiccuping recording. This is sad, because this app has great potential and I like the interface a lot. I hope Griffin can fix this. (Version 1.1.2)

STHENC I had a problem with cues in the wrong place when I tried to cue on the fly, and when editing. I'd place the cues and then it would move them where it pleased The way to avoid this, tedious as it may be, is to separate the tracks after the recording is finished, and never set a cue while playback is paused, only stopped. when you hear the place yoiu want to put a cue, hit pause, view the full wave form and note where the pointer is. Then hit stop, move the pointer back to where it was, zoom in on the break and place the cue. If you're recording from a tape, this is also an opportune time to erase the space between songs. I do have a problem with background noise with my turntable hooked up that I cannot seem to fix. I just get a *sssssshhhhhhhhhhhh....* in the background regardless of whether or not the sylus is on the record or raised. Maybe its the ground. If anyone has any suggestions on grounding my turntable, they are appreciated. The manual says nothing. The manual is horrible. We'd all be better off with this software if they left the manual out completely. (Version 1.1.2)

CRAIG MURRIN I have used the OSX version on an old G-3 iMac running Panther. (Works great BTW, on 312 MB RAM.) The built-in RIAA is great; allows plugging turntable straight into Power Wave. Yes, program occasionally crashes, and also occasionally the tracks load up with distortion that appears to be introduced by the software. These problems may be caused by the cache filling up, as others have theorized. Restarting seems to cure both. (Version 1.1.2)

ANONYMOUS Some interesting quirks to Final Vinyl. USB audio is not supported on older Macs with USB cards yet it works fine on my G3 with 10.2.8. The big problem is that I see absolutely nothing in the Visual Editor! Using the slider is difficult as it does not move smoothly but jumps in 5 second increments. Makes it hard to get the right spot. The other irritants were that the switch on the iMic has to be opposite what the instructions say and the Griffin web site says to run the turntable through an amp while the instructions that came with Final Vinyl say to connect the turntable directly to the iMic. Granted the program is free but tech support could have been more help. (Version 1.1.2)

MICHAEL KIMBALL One additional comment . . . I actually dropped Final Vinyl in favor of CD Spin Doctor (bundled with Roxio's Toast) due to a noise problem I could not fix. I do, however still use the iMic to import the audio. (Version 1.1.2)

DAVID NELSON I just bought the iMic and tried to load the Final Vinyl software from the disc that came with it, but it would not install. However, it did install from the download site. (I have Panther OSX on a G4 Titanium laptop). In the past few days I have used the iMic with Final Vinyl to record over 30 songs from LPs, cassettes, CDs and even the Andrews Sisters Rum and Coca Cola from a 78. This required connecting the RCA plugs from the tonearm into the iMic (via a splitter cable), after disconnecting them from the old 78 player's vacuum tube electronics. This actually worked. I saved the songs as AIFF format and copied them into iTunes. I made a CD from the iTunes playlist and presented it to my wife, who was very happy. I have been pleasantly surprised what I could do with a 35 dollar hardware addition to my computer. The software did have some frustrating quirks. It recorded fine when I hooked up to the tape out connection on the back of my tuner only when I used the turntable. When I used AUX for the cassette deck, those same jacks gave me sound I could hear over the computer, but it would record 3 minutes of silence instead of the music. The fix for this was to hook the Monster Cable I bought with the iMic directly to the cassette player, or other devices and bypass the tuner. Persistence paid off and I got it to work with a few crashes. My son and I tried out the equalizer to reduce hiss on the old 78 recording that was badly scratched and had a lot of crackle and hiss. The trick to using this was to select some of the waveform and preview it while you turned the sliders on the equalizer to get the desired sound. For this badly damaged 78 we left the gain at 0, turned all sliders down to -30db except 120hz, 250hz, 500hz and 1000hz. These seemed to work pretty well at about + 6db. The result was a recording with very little noise, but the singers sounded like they were singing under a blanket. It was the best we could do without algorithm based pop and click removal software and noise filters. I did use Final Vinyl to select some bad clicks and delete them with the erase button. If done too many times this caused unacceptable skips and even rearrangements of the music. It would be more useful if the zoom button went one or two more steps in, to really get only the offending click without the surrounding music. It looks like Toast 6 with CD Spin Doctor 2 may be able to do this much more sophisticated task for another $78. It might be worth it. I cannot justify the high end products like Powerwave and Restoration Suite, for casual home use. Overall I was pretty pleased to get the CD made with some old favorites from the audio graveyard that is our LP and cassette tape collection. Where else could you get Willis Alan Ramsey on CD? I'm looking forward to the next one (probably some old Windham Hill records and Vangelis tapes, possibly a few cuts from some Hearts of Space radio recordings from Houston's KUHF in the 80's). The 78s will have to wait for better restoration software. (Version 1.1.2)

FELIX The installer CD that came with my iMic also did not load (10.3.4). I had to download the application off of Griffin's website. (Version 1.1.2)

FELIX Many of the comments I've read mention the software as free, and factor in consideration of that regarding their review. The software, being that it only works with Griffin's hardware product, cannot be considered free but rather a part of that product. That having been said, I have not successfully been able to run the software on 3 different computers: Macintosh G4 1.25GHz (1.25G RAM) Macintosh iBook G4 800MHz (640MB RAM) Macintosh G3 B/W 450 MHz (640MB RAM) All are running Mac OS 10.3.2 (supported by Final Vinyl 1.1.2) and are using the original USB ports as well as a USB 2.0 card tested on the G4 tower. Initially I was able to record some live audio via Final Vinyl on the iBook with some success. Strangely I have not been able to replicate this success on my iBook or any of my other computers. Sometimes I will get digital noise, sometimes only one channel of audio. Most of the time the program seems to crash when nothing else on OS X does. With stability this software could be a really handy item. Let's hope for a real update soon. (Version 1.1.2)

ANONYMOUS I've used this program and its previous versions to record dozens of LPs. Its big advantage is the RIAA correction for photo-to-iMic connections w/o Amp. When I unplug my laptop from the power cable to run on battery, it can produce great, noise-free recording. Yet, even though it's v. 1.1.2, the program is still flaky. Crashes about 10% of the time after long sessions. Preferences don't remember the automatic track name unless you restart. Features for editing are poor enough as to almost not be useful. Buttons are tiny and confusingly names. It's strange that the "stop after X minutes" menu has settings for 20 and 35 but no times in between. Album sides are often about 20-25 min. Why not a 25 and a 30 minute setting too? I will continue to use this program, but I bring all recorded audio into FeltTip Sound Studio for post-recording editing--that solution works for me. ANONYMOUS This program, as used on my G4, is about as reliable as a 3 week weather report. I bought the imic so that i could record my albums but have had very, very limited success. I get full blown static or nothing at all when I hit "record". When i first installed Final Vinyl i had some luck, but then it just decided to stop working. I would think that Griffin would be embarassed enough by this program that they would correct it. It doesn't do much good to buy their hardware when the software that runs it doesn't work. EDWIN BRUGMAN Using FV 1.1.1. with Panther 10.3.2 on a iMac flatscreen. Altough directly connected to one of the iMac's own USB ports, Final Vinyl doesn't work 100%. Sometimes there is no problem, many times the signal is distorted a lot. Meters are peaking (though has nothing to do with input settings), no recording possible. Between good and bad, no settings have been changed. It just happens. Only solution to get things right, is to re-connect to USB and restart computer. Even then things don't always return to normal. Anyone with the same experience and/or a solution? (Version 1.1.1)

JEH OK, I guess I've got to post this review...as a counterpoint to other reviews already out there on the web. Within two days of buying my iMic and installing Final Vinyl, I had recorded, equalized, imported (iTunes) and synced (iPod) over three hours of wonderful music from my LP collection: music that has not been (and likely will not be) reissued on CD. The results are excellent, and I couldn't be more pleased. Final Vinyl is not (and Griffin makes this very statement in the manual) a high-end audio editing application. Its editing capabilities let you delete extra silence and do some modest equalization. It will not make beat-up LPs rescued from the floor of the 1969 Minibus sound like pristine remastered CDs; but it will allow you to mitigate scratches and hiss. The better the LP, in terms of condition and production, the better the digital result: no surprise there. The application has not misbehaved in any way; it quit once when I foolishly unplugged the iMic with Final Vinyl running, but that was my own fault. I agree that it's a good idea to quit and relaunch the application after each extended session, since that seems to be the most effective way to empty its cache (and it would be nice to see this addressed in a future release). I'd like a "fade" button too. But those are hardly dealbreakers, in a free application that teams seamlessly with an excellent piece of hardware. (I'm on 10.2.8, so I can't speak to any Panther issues.) Could the interface stand improvement? You bet. The "save" process could be improved, and - like most audio and graphics editors - the controls could be a bit more intuitive. But on the whole, the interface is attractive, streamlined and decidedly Mac-like. Really, I think we should be applauding and encouraging Griffin. The company has a proven history of developing useful and innovative hardware for the Mac, and Final Vinyl is an excellent adjunct to the iMic. Given time, I'm sure it will be better still (the manual promises support for audio plug-ins). Four stars as it stands today, and an extra half-a-star for being freeware...more than you can say for iPhoto. You go, Griffin! (Version 1.0.1)

MIKE I have been having trouble with the software. I am using OS 10.2.8 and the software fails to detect the powerwave when it is plugged into the USB port. I have been able to record using the powerwave with iMovie but have been unable to with the the Final Vinyl software. Anyone familiar with this (Version 1.0.1)

JAMEZ I talked to the people at Griffin and they said that the current version of Final Vinyl doesn't recognize the Powerwave. The story is that they are working on an upgrade that will be available in January, which still remains to be seen. (Version 1.0.1)

HENRY I'm running Panther and the final vinyl software isn't recognizing the powerwave either. Very frustrating that the powerwave is shipped with incompatible software. (Version 1.0.1)

JAMES quote---final vinyl software isn't recognizing the powerwave--- I have noticed the same..I just Unplug the USB from the Back and put it back in.. I have also noticed when using the USB in the powerwave without Final Vinyl.. the same nonrecognization takes place. (Version 1.0.1)

STEPHEN I have the same problem with Final Vinyl. I am using OS 10.2.6 and can"t detect Griffin Input with Powerwave. Guess I"ll just have to use a program called The Analog Ripper that I was using with OS 9.2 until Griffin sort their problems out.

SALLY G Same problem using 10.2.8 and a new powerwave and FV 1.0.1. Final vinyl can't find the powerwave. Geesh. I can see audio in the sound panel. Does anyone get these versions to work together? (Version 1.0.1)

DIG_IT I am using Final Viny with 10.3 and it is working. Never had a crash with the software, granted I've not used it that much , but I was able to record some tapes without any problems. It does have a decent manual and one should read it before trying to work with it. Prefrably, have the manuals opens as you play with it. The only problem is recording straight from the turntable, too much noise. However, I do not know if it is the software or the turntable. No pre amp involved. So, for a free software, I do not believe one can complain. By the way, using it mostly with my iBook. (Version 1.0.1)

ANONYMOUS I was just told by Griffin tech support that Final Vinyl does not work with Mac OS X v10.3 (Panther), and that they don't know when it will, if ever. Seems odd to me that Griffin sells the PowerWave USB audio recording device without even any minimal software to make it useful. (Version 1.0.1)

XJAWAX Well, this program looks groovie, but it does not work on my iBook. When I record, it gives me a lot of klicks, and other noise. They mention it on their FAQ page. Too bad, have to switch to a different program. (Version 1.0.1)

DOBIS I have been using this app for the past month without issue. It isn't as intuitive as it could be, but if you read the manual, you shouldn't have a problem. Most free apps aren't documented with nearly the care this one has been...if they are documented at all. (Version 1.0.1)

DLNUZUM So far my experience with Final Vinyl is bad. Crashes for all sorts of reasons. The visual editor works immediately after recording but never at any other time. Perhaps it's not quite time for this program. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS Great idea, but presently useless. The whole purpose of this product is to be able to record and save records, except the product always crashes when you try to save. Also, it only saves in .wav, and all my Mac software works witth .aiff. (Version 0.7)
