On his homepage the developer tells you that layers will come in the near future.

For me it goes this way:

A big hello to layers (and layer modes) in Compositor and a kick to Photoshop Elements and all the others.

TEKL  Nice App. I'm missing the standard keyboard shortcuts from Photoshop (W=Wand, M=Selection, B=Brush ...). Also I can't find layers.

XYPHER  Destroys all other Image programs and almost topples Photoshop when compared with it's extensive and varied filter set. If you want to create pencil work then the, 'CharCold' action gives unbeatable results in contrast to AKVIS Sketch which costs a heap and works badly!

BEEP BEEP, BEEP BEEP... YEAH!  'Compositor' for Mac is a superb application. Download the trial, and you'll definetely see what I mean... the filters & image manipulation possibilities are made with great care and by someone with huge programming skills AND who's also listening to tips from users, to see if he can further improve the application. Can't wait to see v3 coming out! :)

ARTISTE  Compositor fills a creative gap left by PhotoShop and GraphicConverter.

This is an app every artist-- amateur or professional-- should seriously consider for the toolbox.

The author is extremely responsive to customer feedback and is himself a creative artist and programmer.

LAUREL CHAUVIN  I've been searching for a program that would crop and resize images plus convert from .pict to .jpg. Compositor is it!!! I've used it for a few weeks now and I absolutely love it!

GRADUS  The coolest image manipulation program in the shareware market. Cool features, cool filters, and the coolest hidden shareware timer file I ever spied out. The price is a bit high (at v.1 he asked for about $12), but His Coolness "Artly There" has added such a wealth of new features in v.2 that asking for thrice the price seems fair. I wish, however, that there was a reliable timetable for an OS X version. Still being strictly OS 9 adds to the coolness factor (really!), but I don't invest a dime in OS 9 apps anymore. Any word on that matter, Mr. Thomas Knoll jr.? Apart from that, Compositor is for image manipulation what GraphicConverter is for - well, image conversion. It's a Mac shareware classic. Did I already say it's cool?

UFAUXREAL  Great Program! This art editor and image creator has a lot of cool features and filters that lets you produce some very creative results. The programmer is very responsive to your questions and suggestions and is constantly upgrading the product which comes with a lenghty evaluation period when you download it. Check it out!
