BDKENNEDY1  This used to be my favorite weather program. After giving up on this years ago, I decided to come back and see what's new. To my surprise the long-awaited 2.0 still isn't here. Instead it's only received minor bug fixes since 2003.

WCITYMIKE  Because Meteorologist makes the source code available, you can download it, rip out the NSLog lines that are spamming the system.log, and recompile it. I did this -- with little technical know-how, although it does require a little study -- and now have a blissfully quiet Meteorologist.

MONOCLAST  This is a great application that does a great job of keeping you updated about weather conditions, and is very stable and relatively bug-free. The user interface - in particular the preferences - could use some work in terms of better organization and usability, but what is there works.

One gripe I have with this application is for several releases now it's polluted the system log with entries like these:

And it does this each time it checks for updated weather, which means my logs typically have over FIVE HUNDRED such entries a DAY! For instance, here's the count for today (and the day is far from over):

Obviously having these messages interspersed with critical messages in the log makes casually scanning the logs for other pertinent information a pain in the ass. In fact, i typically have ti filter the Meteorologist messages out to view my logs efficiently, which means viewing them through the command line and using grep to filter.

This may not bother the developer, but it's surely irritating to others. I realize this is a freeware application, and I'm not giving it a bad rating for this; but I really hope the author will stop logging unimportant data like this to the system log in a future update! Put this stuff in the console log if you must, but keep it out of our system logs, please!

However, I still encounter problem to add some foreign cities. Usually when the Server can't find the city, it shows error message "No Matching Cities Found." But when I try to add Taipei or Odassa, it just went blank. But I can go to weather.com and find those cities on their site. Maybe there's still bugs with some cities? E_COMMERCE  One of the users over on SourceForge rewrote the weather.xml file, which is used to parse results for city searches. In a nutshell, you can search for city names again (but not zipcodes).

JOHNNY ROCKET  a buddy of mine finally converted to Mac and I was giving him some programs for his new computer. One of which was Meteorologist. Unfortunately every city search we did failed to find anything. His internet connection works fine, so tested on my copy of meteorologist and it wouldn't find any city either. What gives? has something changed and now it's a worthless program that will only give data for the default city? looks like it's no longer under development either, last update was almost 2 years ago. The first post list the changes that need to be made to Meterologist/Resources/weather.xml (Right click on Meterologist, choose "Show Package Contents," and navigate to weather.xml). Use TextEdit to open up weather.xml. Be sure to quit Meterologist before opening the text file.

The first post lists a lot of text, but note that you only need to copy and paste a few lines. Each line that needs replacing is marked with a "!" in the beginning like

You will also notice a header like, "*** 76,88 ****," repeated twice. The first occurrence is just the listing of line 76 to 88 from the original weather file. The second occurence lists the same lines from a corrected weather.xml.

After changing the lines, save the text file and launch Meterologist.

I can't get it to add cities either, BUT I was able to get this .plist file from my preferences on my laptop:

I had LOST all my cities on my desktop, but I imported this file to my desktop and replaced the .plist file already there, and I got all my cities back. Since they were the same on the laptop, it worked fine. Maybe this will help you.

SIDETRACKED  This has always worked perefctly for me (I'm running 10.4.7).

It's a terrific little app. Customizable, takes up very little room in my menubar, instantly gives a lot of useful details I can choose for the day and week.

Even the BBC Weather Centre database doesn't manage that so I am impressed. JOSHUA OCHS  Once again Meteo is unable to parse the weather data. So it sits up on my menubar cycling forever. A couple of tips:

1) More reliable parsing. If this means using another source that has an XML feed or something more guaranteed than screen-scraping, so be it. WeatherPop does not have these problems, but also does not have the weather radar.

2) When loading the initial weather, please add the "Controls" menu instead of just "Meteo is fetching the weather". Otherwise, there's no way to quit it!

3) For loading weather data, icons, etc, use more reasonable timeouts. If you're not getting a response after 30 seconds or so, give up already.

After downloading, the dmg image mounts, but:

- If I try to run Meteorologist from the mounted image, I starts and quits immediately without warning.

- If I try to copy Meteorologist from the mounted image to my hard disk, I get a Finder error:

"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "Meteorologist" could not be read or written (Error Code -36)

Note: I suspect corruption in the file that was posted. For info to the developper, the "Meteorologist" app file I found in the image is 1,684,221 bytes in size; is it correct? incomplete file or what?

ANONYMOUS  Meteorologist doesn't work with multi-users. When a 2nd user tries to run it, it quickly quits itself, and quits the other user's Meteorologist, too. This is an amazing feat in programming because I had never seen anything like that in OS X before. Mac OS X sees to it that each person can run the same application. No special programming required. How Meteorologist manages to go out of its way to screw this up is very interesting. Works fine if you are the only user on your computer.

BEZIERBOY  Sourceforge bad, Meteo 1.4.1 upgrade good. I had no problems using the New York, NY download mirror, as that's where I live and work, but Sourceforge is very frequently unreliable and so hard to navigate I'd call it "user-hostile". This is why I use an OS X Mac and not Linux.

Amazing how reliant one can become on rather rickety webscraping as a data source. Hopefully NWS will get their XML/RSS feeds up soon. Everyone deserves free weather reports.

CRAZY IVAN  Paul: You may need to delete the old version 1.4 preferences. It seems it is working for others. When mine stopped working I figured it was because of the "active servers" that the weather info was coming from (Weather.com wasn't working). I downgraded to 1.3.0 and it was still broken, checked Preferences and it was still using Weather.com. Deleted prefs file and restarted Meteo. and it let me choose National Weather Service as active server...Bingo! I will give 1.4.1 a try.

The previous version, at least, showed me the temperature, even though the icon didn't work. Now, with 1.4.1, I have no icon and no display of temperature. What to do? :(

I give it 5 stars because I know that when it does work, it's exceptional. I hope future releases, or maybe a tip with this one, will solve the problem. Goodluck.

ANONYMOUS  For a freebie, this up to now beats Weather Pop. Especially the variety of colored icons which is not the case with WeatherPop (freebie).

Up to now the only two things I can detect is that it did'nt start up and launch immediately but eventually did by itself.

Also, the menu item seems to disappear by itself after about 20 minutes although it comes back as soon as the dock icon is clicked.

I will definitely recommend. Also, pretty stable and more info than WeatherPop.

ANONYMOUS  So far, so good; very nice update! Refused to launch initially, so I (gasp!) read the readme and trashed my old prefs:

That did the trick. Took no time at all to reload my cities. Very intuitive operation, far superior to my standby, Son of Weather Grok, which has sadly been neglected by the new developer.

I suggest reading the READ Me of Meteorologist.

In a nutshell. Go to the USER.

Open Preferences, and search for every Preference having to do with Meteologist.

Toss them into the trash. Toss out the present application, and remove from the dock.

Reinstall the application.

I did this several times. Basically I had to research the Prefence File and found Meterologist at other locations in the PReference file. I tossed them all out.

I reinstalled the Application. It is working fine.

Problems that ocurred:

1. The application would appear, and then disappear.

2. It would not load.

3. It disappeared from the menu bar.

Now it works fine. But it does not revert to Cel. temperature.

Both are good apps., they do about the same things, but their relative quality is really determined by the quality and accuracy of the weather services they access. PASTOR G  Well, Disappointed, don't be too disappointed. None of the U.S. cities I have entered work either. Los Angeles, Milwaukee, St. Louis do not seem to exist. While many may prefer that one, two or all three of these metropolises did not exist the application should recognize them. The one city it did find in its search is Santa Clarita, CA but it apparently no longer has weather. So... this is probably a step on the right path to getting this once fantastic application back but it needs work.

MONICA  I can't seem to get it to display the weather for any location outside the US, even when they are returned in the search results for Weather.com and Wunderground.com (not the National Weather Service, obviously).

Also, shouldn't there be a way to exclude certain servers without having to do it for each weather item? Or am I missing something?

ANONYMOUS  This app worked without fail until the latest update. Now it crashes repeatedly and and won't relaunch without a restart. The preference file seems to be the culprit, but deleting it and restarting is only a temporary fix. The problems soon re-occur.

PHIL  hi, i have loved this program for the week i have had it, but now it doesn't work anymore!

is there anywhere to find out what is going on and if it will be fixed? checked on sourceforge, but nothing there...i know it is a volunteer effort and the program is free, so i don't want to sound as though i am complaining! i'm just curious as to when it may return in all its glory, because when this program works it is such a gem. i hope development is continuing.

ANONYMOUS  This used to be an excellent little program, but it seems that its developers have not kept it up to date with changes in the configuration (I suppose) of the weather sources (i.e. weather.com). I can't get any info from wunderground.com, and the extended forecasts from the national weather service and weather.com sites are not available any more. And goodbye to the icons displaying current conditions in the menu bar! These were pretty nifty, but now they do not load - leaving one with a question mark inside a grey circle. More or less the same way I'm left regarding the future of the program.

Hope there's someone out there tinkering with it still!

ANONYMOUS  version 1.3.1a is out. prefs are now correctly identify it as 1.3.1, but it still crashes with weather.com on my g5 under 10.3.2 (also on AlPB). tried to delete prefs and start frash but it did not help - just when i select a city with weather.com and click confirm, meteo quits. works fine with wunderground, although there in-line forecast is so long, it taks half of my 23" monitor.

this has been happening to me since v. 1.3 (or even 1.2.8, i do not recall).

i have no menu modifiers, but i do use ape/haxies by unsanity. however, i did exclude meteo from all of them..

It is much more stable. Meteorologist crashes everytime i try to update the cities and no longer seems to show images.

If you're having crash problems, try deleting the prefs, and disable any menubar modifying hacks before running the first time or making major changes to the settings. We're working on isolating and fixing that problem.

STILL THE BETTER OF THEM  I've tried them all and even registered a few others, but Meteorologist is by far my favorite. Why? It is so efficient. This version has its caveats. First, the instructions incorrectly tell you to delete the Meteorologist.plist file if you are having problems -- it should be meteo.plist. I had to delete all existing files in the meteo family and start fresh. I also had to exclude Meteorologist from my Unsanity haxies, but that's okay as they do not add any benefit to Meteorologist. It has some bugs, but is working fine for me as of now and still remains my favorite.
